A dotfiles variant's target can now be a template, so a shared config can link into a location that differs between machines, such as a custom XDG_CONFIG_HOME or MISE_CONFIG_DIR. Previously the entry was ignored with variant target must be absolute or start with ~/, because the check ran on the unrendered string.

[dotfiles.examplectl]
source = "dotfiles/examplectl"
mode = "symlink"
variants = [{ default = true, target = "{{ xdg_config_home }}/examplectl" }]

With XDG_CONFIG_HOME=~/custom-config, this links ~/custom-config/examplectl to the source. Only the variant target is rendered; the table key stays a stable logical name for overrides between config files.

  • The template has the context every config file gets (env, xdg_config_home, config_root, ...). exec() is not available, and neither is vars, because the file resolution path has no Config to take a per-file context from.
  • The absolute-or-~/ check now runs on the rendered path when a variant is selected; a template that fails to render, or renders to a relative path, ignores the entry with that reason.
  • Targets without template syntax behave as before.

Closes the idea in discussion #14843.

Validation

  • New e2e test_dotfiles_variant_target_template (custom XDG_CONFIG_HOME link, relative render rejected); existing test_dotfiles_destination_variants still passes.
  • Clippy was not run locally (mlua-sys build script fails in this sandbox); CI covers it.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes where dotfiles are written on disk via template-rendered paths; mitigated by no-exec rendering and post-render absolute-path validation, but misconfigured templates could still point at unexpected locations.

Overview
Variant target values can now be Tera templates, so destinations can depend on machine context (e.g. {{ xdg_config_home }}/examplectl) instead of failing the old absolute/~/ check on the raw string.

When a variant is selected, the target is rendered with the usual config template context (env, xdg_config_home, config_root, config_source) via get_tera_without_exec—no exec() or vars. The absolute-or-~/ rule applies to the rendered path; render failures or relative results mark the entry invalid and skip it. Incoming-config preflight validates template syntax early and uses template_literal so {{ … }} in targets is not mistaken for wildcards in absent mode (control blocks {% %} defer wildcard checks until render).

Docs and e2e/unit tests cover custom XDG_CONFIG_HOME, bad syntax, wildcards, and absent behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Dotfile variant destination overrides can use supported configuration template values, including environment settings, the XDG config directory, and the configuration root. Templates are rendered when a variant is selected; entry keys are not rendered. Rendered destinations must be absolute paths or start with ~/.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Variants with template errors or invalid rendered destinations are reported as invalid and skipped.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified supported template values and destination path requirements for dotfile variants, including that exec() and vars are unavailable.

📝 Walkthrough

Variant target overrides can use templates. When a variant is selected, its target is rendered with configuration context and validated. Documentation and end-to-end tests cover supported context, successful application, and invalid targets.

Templated variant targets render with the base configuration context and config_root. Rendered paths must be absolute or start with ~/. Variants without a target override retain the entry target. Documentation describes the supported context. End-to-end tests check a customized XDG config directory, a relative target, an undefined template variable, and removal of an absent dotfile.

Validate template syntax during incoming preflight.

If an incoming variant declares target = "{{", this branch skips validation. The incoming-config preflight then accepts the declaration without rendering it. When that variant is selected, rendering fails and composition drops the entry. Check template syntax during preflight without evaluating the template, so a malformed shared configuration is rejected before it is accepted. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
