feat(dotfiles): erase a tracked path from history with mise dot history purge - #14831
Conversation
…tory `untrack`, `rollback`, and `undo` only append checkpoints, so a secret tracked by mistake stayed readable in history. The new command rewrites the history without the path, keeping other files' checkpoints, descriptions and numeric IDs. It refuses when the path's history is already on the origin. purgechecks origin commit IDs only againstwalk.held, which contains target-bearing commits from the local history walk. Divergent local and origin histories are supported and later merged with both parent histories. A target-bearing origin-only commit can therefore bypass the guard, while the purge rewrites local history and reports success even though the saved version remains reachable from origin.Suggested fix

Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

High Risk
Rewrites local Git history and prunes objects; mistakes or partial failure could corrupt the checkpoint index, though locks, origin refusal, and interrupt recovery mitigate that.
Overview
Adds
mise dot history purgeso users can remove a file or directory from local dotfiles history without wiping unrelated checkpoints. The new
purgeengine rewrites the bare Git history: strips the path from snapshot trees (includinghome@variantroots and manifest permission entries), drops commits that only touched that path, remaps checkpoint references in operation/annotation trailers, and keeps numeric checkpoint IDs while commit hashes change. It refuses when upstream already contains versions of the path, supports dry-run/--yes, optionalrefs/mise/purge-backup/backup, and prunes unreachable objects unless--keep-objects. Interrupted rewrites are finished viapurge-pending.jsonon store open and extra Git plumbing onHistoryRepo.Docs, usage/man pages, and an e2e test cover the workflow; encryption/history guides now point here instead of only manual
git update-refsteps.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit b6835a0. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
