With minimum_release_age set, installing a version newer than the cutoff made every later mise outdated and mise up warn about skipping it, even though it was already installed and there was nothing to upgrade:

$ mise outdated
mise WARN packslip:github.com/max-sixty/worktrunk: skipping 0.81.0: verified release time is after the allowed cutoff
mise All tools are up to date

Now mise stays quiet when the version being skipped for the release-age cutoff is already installed. The version is still skipped, and other skip reasons (withdrawn release, no artifact for the host) still warn.

Only the packslip backend is changed. No test added: the path needs a signed manifest and network. Verified with cargo clippy --lib -- -D warnings.

Fixes discussion #14834.

Note

Low Risk
Packslip resolution/outdated warning behavior only; skipping logic is unchanged aside from quieter logs for an already-installed cutoff case.

Overview
When minimum_release_age excludes a packslip release because its verified time is past the cutoff, mise outdated / mise up no longer emit packslip:… skipping … warnings if that version is already installed.

candidate_exclusion still treats too-new releases as ineligible, but for an installed version it runs host artifact and requirement checks first so a cutoff-only skip is distinguishable from other failures. admits suppresses the skip warning when the reason is AFTER_CUTOFF and the version is installed; other skip reasons still warn.

The cutoff message is centralized in AFTER_CUTOFF, with a new is_installed_version helper.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of releases that exceed the verified-age cutoff.
    • Releases are now evaluated against artifact and requirement checks before being excluded for age.
    • Installed versions remain eligible for evaluation and no longer trigger unnecessary warnings when age is their only exclusion reason.
    • Standardized the exclusion reason shown when an outdated release cannot be selected as a new candidate.

…-age cutoff

mise outdated and mise up warned on every run that they were skipping a
version the user had already installed, because it was newer than the
minimum_release_age cutoff. An installed version has nothing to upgrade,
so the cutoff warning is now dropped for it. The version is still skipped.

📝 Walkthrough

Packslip now uses a shared exclusion reason for releases beyond the verified-age cutoff. Installed versions continue through artifact and requirement checks before the cutoff exclusion is applied. Cutoff-only exclusions do not produce warnings for installed versions.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

b31fbac208f7 vs a8bb03575000 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.

… level (#15056)

With `minimum_release_age` set, resolving a packslip tool printed a
warning for every recent version the delay held back. A version held
back by the delay is what the user asked for, so these are no longer
warnings.

Before, with `minimum_release_age = "3d"` and `hk = "latest"`:

```text
$ mise latest hk
mise WARN  packslip:github.com/jdx/hk: skipping 2.9.0: verified release time is after the allowed cutoff
mise WARN  packslip:github.com/jdx/hk: skipping 2.8.2: verified release time is after the allowed cutoff
2.8.1
```

After, the same command prints only `2.8.1`. The skipped versions still
appear with `MISE_DEBUG=1`. This matches other backends, such as uv,
which do not warn about versions the delay holds back.

This applies to any release-age cutoff, including one set with
`--before`, since each is a cutoff the user chose. Other reasons a
packslip version is skipped (no compatible artifact, unmet requirements)
still warn. #14835 already silenced the message for an installed
version; this covers the versions that are not installed.

Validated with `cargo check`. No new e2e test: reproducing a held-back
release needs a live packslip release inside the cooling window.

Fixes discussion #15052.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Chores**
* Releases excluded for being too recent are now logged at a lower
diagnostic level, including when already installed. Other exclusion
reasons continue to be logged as warnings.
* **Bug Fixes**
* When all matching releases are refused, the error now includes a hint
to enable `MISE_DEBUG=1` for additional diagnostic information.
