mise dot apply silently overwrites a rendered template target you edited by hand, so the edit is lost unless you notice first. mise already records a digest of what it last wrote to each template target, so it can tell an edit from its own output.

apply now warns before overwriting such a target:

mise files: ~/.private.sh was edited since mise last wrote it; applying overwrites the edit. Move it into ~/src/private.sh to keep it

The overwrite itself is unchanged: templates still apply without --force, as documented, so unattended runs are not blocked.

The warning stays quiet when:

  • the source changed but the target is untouched (the usual case),
  • mise has no record for the target (first apply, pre-existing file, lost state).

Tested with a new e2e test (test_dotfiles_template_edited_warning) covering the quiet and warning cases.

Second half of discussion #15017; the first half (refusing mise dot add on a template) is #15019.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Template application now warns when it is about to overwrite a readable, regular file that differs from the version mise last wrote, including files with invalid UTF-8 content. The updated template is still applied after the warning. Targets without a previously recorded version, unreadable targets, and non-regular files do not trigger this warning.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the dotfiles guide to explain the warning shown before overwriting an edited template target.

Before confirmation and mutation, template application checks rendered targets with recorded digests. It warns when an eligible target differs or contains invalid UTF-8. The end-to-end test covers untouched, edited, unrecorded, and non-UTF-8 targets. The documentation describes the warning.

Assert the first apply’s combined output.

The first apply only checks its exit status. The later assertion runs a second apply and does not capture stderr. Replace the first assertion with a combined-output check, and remove the second apply:

Update the first `mise dot apply --yes` assertion in the test to capture
combined stdout and stderr while checking that the output does not contain “was
edited since.” Remove the separate second apply assertion so the warning check
uses the first apply’s output.
