mise now skips the trusted_config_paths lookup for configs that are already trusted by other means, which speeds up every prompt for users with entries on slow mounts.

Reported in discussion 14864: on macOS, trusted_config_paths = ["/home/me/proj"] costs ~17–20ms per entry on every hook-env, because /home is an autofs mount and mise canonicalizes each entry on each check. The old order paid that for every config, even one trusted by a plain mise trust record or the global config, before looking at those cheaper rules.

trusted_config_paths can only turn "not trusted" into "trusted", so it now runs last, after the ignore list, global config, monorepo marker, trust record and worktree rules. Behavior is unchanged: a path in trusted_config_paths still overrides mise trust --ignore, and still trusts without a content hash in paranoid mode.

# ~/.config/mise/config.toml
[settings]
trusted_config_paths = ["/home/me/work"] # no longer looked up for configs trusted by record

Two more changes cover configs trusted only by a trusted_config_paths entry (the reporter's likely case):

  • The entries are compared as written first. A canonical path has no symlinks, so an entry that is a prefix of it is a real directory and matches with no filesystem call. ~/work expands to a canonical path, so this is the common hit.
  • When no entry matches as written, each entry is resolved once per process, including entries that don't exist. Before, a nonexistent /home/me/proj was retried (a fresh autofs lookup) for every config checked.

An entry that doesn't match as written still needs one lookup per process, and so does a config that matches none. The trusted_config_paths docs now say so and suggest ~/... instead of /home/... on macOS.

Not measured on autofs (no autofs available here). Existing e2e tests test_trusted_config_paths_override_ignore, test_local_settings_trust_controls and test_paranoid_env_file_trust pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Configuration
    • Trust rules that do not depend on configured paths are checked before those paths are resolved.
    • Configured trusted paths are checked as written first, then in canonicalized form if needed, and can override persisted ignore choices.
    • Absolute trusted paths are cached until settings are reset, reloaded, overridden, or the system installs directory changes.
  • Documentation
    • Notes explain that resolving configured paths may require filesystem lookups, particularly on network or automounted drives, and recommend home-relative paths or paths that exist locally.

📝 Walkthrough

Settings now expand configured trusted paths without filesystem access and cache canonicalization results for absolute paths. Trust evaluation checks other trust rules first, then configured paths.

Changes: Trusted config path evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path expansion and canonicalization
src/config/settings.rs, settings.toml
SettingsExt adds an iterator that expands configured paths without filesystem access. Relative paths use cached canonicalization. Absolute-path results, including failures, are cached until settings or directory changes clear the cache. Documentation describes path comparison order and possible filesystem lookup costs.
Trust evaluation
src/config/config_file/mod.rs
Trust evaluation checks non-path rules first, then configured trusted paths as a fallback. It compares configured paths as written and then canonicalized. The main-checkout equivalent lookup receives the canonicalized candidate by reference.

[Medium impact] This PR appears safe to merge; no new blocking issues were found.

Summary

This PR checks cheaper trust rules before resolving trusted_config_paths. It also adds an as-written path check and caches resolved absolute entries, including missing paths.

  • Config checks look at trusted paths only after other trust rules.
