Fixes #14823.

On Windows, installing a uv-locked pipx: tool whose console script name ends in .py failed after the package installed. For example, pipx:clang-format@23.1.3 declares clang-format-diff.py, and mise tried to copy Scripts\clang-format-diff.py.exe, which doesn't exist:

failed copy: ...\.venv\Scripts\clang-format-diff.py.exe -> ...\bin\clang-format-diff.py.exe: The system cannot find the file specified.

uv drops a trailing .py from the entry point name before adding .exe, so the launcher is clang-format-diff.exe. mise now checks the venv's Scripts directory for both name.py.exe (pip's naming) and name.exe (uv's naming) and exposes whichever exists. Behavior on other platforms and for names without .py is unchanged.

Validation: cargo check passes. Not tested on Windows and no new test added.

Note

Low Risk
Scoped to Windows launcher name resolution during uv-lock script discovery; non-Windows behavior unchanged and covered by new tests.

Overview
Fixes Windows pipx/uv-lock installs that fail when copying console scripts whose entry point names end in .py (e.g. clang-format-diff.py).

DISCOVER_SCRIPTS no longer assumes every Windows launcher is {entry.name}.exe. For console/GUI entry points on Windows it probes the venv Scripts folder for name.exe (uv, which strips a trailing .py) and name.py.exe (pip) and records whichever file exists, defaulting to the first candidate if neither is present. Non-Windows naming is unchanged.

Adds a windows_discovery test helper that runs the snippet with IS_WINDOWS=True on any host, plus windows_discovery_finds_the_launcher_that_exists covering uv-style, pip-style, and plain .exe names.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Windows script discovery by checking both .py.exe and .exe launcher formats.
    • The first available matching launcher is now selected, including for standard executable names.
    • Script discovery behavior on non-Windows platforms remains unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

pipx entry-point discovery now selects existing Windows .exe launchers for names with or without a trailing .py. Tests use a Windows override and cover both launcher naming forms and ordinary entry-point names.

Explanation

Issue #14823 requires Windows uv-locked pipx: installs to resolve console scripts that end in .py. DISCOVER_SCRIPTS checks the pip launcher <name>.py.exe and the uv launcher <name without .py>.exe, then selects the existing file. The test covers uv-style, pip-style, and ordinary launcher names. Non-Windows behavior remains unchanged.

Resolve the test interpreter by platform.

On Windows, this test should invoke python.exe instead of requiring python3. If python3 is absent, windows_discovery returns None and the test exits without assertions. The Windows unit job does not provision python3; the E2E Python setup applies only to mise-managed Python.

Update the interpreter lookup in windows_discovery to select python.exe on
Windows and python3 on other platforms, preserving the existing None return when
lookup fails so the test can run assertions in the Windows environment.
