With the official release binaries (rustls), mise refused to start its HTTP client when the system certificate store had no roots, so every download failed with No CA certificates were loaded from the system. That happens in minimal or distroless containers without ca-certificates, and when SSL_CERT_FILE names a missing file. mise now warns once and retries with Mozilla's bundled root certificates, the same roots the npm backend already trusts:

mise WARN no CA certificates could be loaded from the system, so mise is trusting its bundled Mozilla roots. Install ca-certificates, or check SSL_CERT_FILE and SSL_CERT_DIR

The fallback only applies when nothing loads. Roots that do load are never supplemented, so SSL_CERT_FILE and SSL_CERT_DIR keep replacing the system store, for example to pin mise to a private CA. It covers the shared HTTP client (downloads, version lookups) and mise self-update, on Linux and other Unix targets except macOS, in rustls builds. The default native-tls build and macOS/Windows are unchanged, because their verifiers have no empty-store failure to recover from.

This PR also adds an FAQ entry, "How does mise handle TLS certificates?", and a note in the packaging docs. They cover which trust store each build uses, that SSL_CERT_FILE replaces the system store on Linux, and the new fallback.

Not covered by the fallback: the vfox, cache, sigstore, gix and rattler clients build their own reqwest clients, so they still fail on an empty store.

Validation

Release feature set (--no-default-features --features rustls-native-roots,self_update,vfox/vendored-lua) on Linux, running mise install against a public site and a local HTTPS server signed by a throwaway CA:

Case Result
public site, SSL_CERT_DIR=<empty dir> warns, TLS succeeds with the bundled roots
public site, SSL_CERT_FILE=<missing file> warns, TLS succeeds with the bundled roots
private CA server, SSL_CERT_FILE=<private CA> TLS succeeds, no warning
public site, SSL_CERT_FILE=<private CA only> UnknownIssuer, so the replace behavior is unchanged
public site, default store TLS succeeds, no warning

Before the change, the first two cases failed with No CA certificates were loaded from the system. I ran clippy with -D warnings on mise-util (rustls and default features) and on the release feature set, plus the focused hk checks. There is no automated test for the empty-store case, because the e2e harness builds with default native-tls, where the fallback isn't compiled in. macOS, Windows and the native-tls build were not tested.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes HTTPS trust behavior for rustls Unix builds when no system CAs load; fallback is scoped to empty-store failures and does not augment loaded roots, but still affects downloads, self-update, cache, sigstore, and vfox traffic.

Overview
Introduces a shared mise-tls crate whose build_client helper retries failed reqwest builds by merging Mozilla bundled root CAs, with a one-time warning, when rustls on Unix (non-macOS) cannot load any system trust store (e.g. minimal containers or bad SSL_CERT_FILE).

Wires that helper into the main HTTP stack (mise-util), mise self-update, remote cache (mise-cache-core), sigstore attestation fetches, and vfox plugin HTTP—replacing direct Client::builder().build() calls while preserving timeouts, redirects, and other builder settings.

Workspace/release/docs: adds the crate to the workspace and rustls feature flags, publishes it in release-plz, and documents TLS behavior in the FAQ, packaging notes, and architecture table.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved HTTPS reliability when the operating system trust store is unavailable or empty by using bundled Mozilla root certificates where supported.
    • Applied consistent certificate handling across downloads, remote caches, plugin requests, package operations, and attestation verification.
    • Preserved existing timeout, redirect, security, and compression settings.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on certificate verification, platform behavior, environment variables, and TLS configurations.
    • Documented TLS architecture and official release binary settings.
  • Chores

    • Included the shared TLS component in release packaging and publication workflows.

Document that official release binaries use rustls with the platform
certificate verifier (the OS trust store), that SSL_CERT_FILE and
SSL_CERT_DIR replace the system store on Linux, and what happens when the
store is empty. Note the release feature set in the packaging docs.

Summary

Adds shared certificate fallback through mise-tls when no system roots load.

  • Rustls HTTP clients retry with bundled roots when no system certificates load.

Both earlier, unnumbered findings are fixed: the packaging docs point to the complete release flags, and the client for manual redirects uses the shared fallback while keeping redirects disabled.

With rustls, reqwest refuses to build a client when the system trust store
has no roots, so mise failed with "No CA certificates were loaded from the
system" in minimal containers and when SSL_CERT_FILE named a missing file.
Retry the build with Mozilla's roots merged in and warn once. Roots that do
load are never supplemented, so SSL_CERT_FILE still replaces the system store.

Applies to the shared HTTP client and self-update on Linux and other Unix
targets except macOS, in rustls builds.

Move the empty-store fallback into a new mise-tls crate and use it for the
vfox, remote task cache and sigstore attestation clients as well, so they no
longer fail with "No CA certificates were loaded from the system" where the
shared HTTP client now recovers. Add a unit test for the empty-store case and
publish mise-tls from release-plz ahead of its dependents.

With native-tls also enabled, reqwest's default backend never reads the system
