Fixes #14803

Editors that validate strictly against schema/mise.json (Tombi, for example) flagged valid keys in [dotfile_groups.<name>.entries], because the schema declared those entries as an open object with no properties:

[dotfile_groups.common.entries]
"~/.ssh/config" = { mode = "copy", permissions = "0600" }
# in strict mode, `dotfile_groups.common.entries."~/.ssh/config"` does not allow "mode" key.

Group entries now have a declared schema (DotfileGroupEntryTableDecl): the whole-file keys of a [dotfiles] entry, with the same descriptions and key-combination rules. It leaves out block, line, template, comment, position and merge, which a group rejects. Editors get validation and completion for these entries, and unknown keys are now reported.

  • A mise-system test checks the declared keys match what the group entry parser reads.
  • CI now lints schema/tombi-fixtures/*.toml with tombi lint --error-on-warnings (an hk step), pointing at the checkout's generated schema. The fixture reproduces the issue and fails on the previous schema.

Not run: the full mise run lint stops on an existing unused dependency openssl warning in Cargo.toml, unrelated to this change.

Note

Low Risk
Schema, docs, and test/CI tooling only; runtime dotfile behavior should be unchanged aside from stricter config deserialization for unknown group-entry keys at the declaration layer.

Overview
Fixes strict editor validation for [dotfile_groups.<name>.entries] table values, which were previously modeled as an open object in schema/mise.json so keys like mode and permissions were rejected under Tombi and similar tools.

Replaces the loose toml::Table schema hook with a dedicated DotfileGroupEntryTableDecl type: the same whole-file fields as [dotfiles] entries (with edit-only keys omitted), deny_unknown_fields, and the existing entry_rules JSON Schema constraints. The generated schema now lists properties and combination rules explicitly.

Adds a mise-system test that declared struct fields match what the group-entry parser reads (minus group). CI pins Tombi, runs tombi lint --error-on-warnings on schema/tombi-fixtures/*.toml via hk, and includes a fixture that would fail on the old schema. Docs config-reference examples gain sample keys for per-entry tables.

📝 Walkthrough

Dotfile group entries now use a typed whole-file table with supported properties and conditional schema validation. The changes also add a TOML fixture, a field-parity test, reference values, and the Tombi tool.

Explanation

Issue #14803 requires explicit schema properties for group entries, strict validation, representative fixtures, and CI execution with tombi lint --error-on-warnings. DotfileGroupEntryTableDecl declares the supported whole-file fields, rejects unknown keys, and applies entry rules. The fixture covers mode and permissions with a local schema. The parity test checks declaration and parser alignment. The PR summary reports the required CI lint step.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to issue #14803. The typed declaration and generated schema fix validation. The parity test prevents schema and parser drift. The fixture, Tombi tool configuration, CI lint step, and documentation examples support the requested editor validation. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

🟡 Minor · Reject unsupported keys in group entries at runtime. · dotfiles.rs:163-221

crates/mise-config/src/dotfiles.rs:163-221
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject unsupported keys in group entries at runtime.

A group entry with mode = "copy" and block = "x" passes file_entry_from_toml. FileTomlTable ignores block, so merge_group_toml_entry processes the value as a whole-file copy entry. The requested edit is lost, while the closed schema rejects the same configuration.

Add validation only in merge_group_toml_entry. Do not add it to parse_file_entry, because general [dotfiles] entries still support edit keys.
