mise install aube@latest, or any install dependency that resolves aube@latest (such as npm:ajv-cli), failed when nested mise configs pinned the tool to different versions:

mise ERROR Failed to install aube@latest: lockfile contains multiple resolutions for aube@latest with the same options

This hit checkouts nested under another mise checkout (a parent mise.lock pinning aube 2.7.0, a child pinning 2.8.1). A request with no owning config reads every lockfile merged together, and both pins matched.

Now, when the merged read is ambiguous, mise falls back to the lockfiles in precedence order and the nearest one that decides the request wins. The ambiguity error remains only if no single lockfile decides it. Requests owned by a config still read only that config's lockfile, as before.

Validation

  • Unit test for the nearest-lockfile selection.
  • New e2e lockfile/test_lockfile_nested_ambiguous_latest: parent pins tiny 1.0.0, child pins 1.0.1, and mise install tiny@latest from the child now picks 1.0.1. The same setup fails with the error above on 2026.10.11.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings and mise run lint-fix pass.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes core lockfile resolution for unowned latest installs in nested configs; wrong precedence could pick the wrong version, though behavior for single-config and owned requests is unchanged.

Overview
Fixes nested lockfile ambiguity for installs like mise install tiny@latest when parent and child mise.lock pin the same tool to different versions. Those requests have no owning config, so mise merges every lockfile and used to fail with “multiple resolutions.”

get_locked_version now tracks when resolution uses the merged lockfile view. If that lookup returns AmbiguousRequestBinding, it retries by walking lockfiles in nearest-config-first order via new nearest_lockfile_decision, using the first lockfile that yields a single clear pin (ambiguous lockfiles are skipped). Config-owned requests still use only that config’s lockfile.

Adds a unit test for precedence/fallback behavior and an e2e case: child directory installs tiny@latest and gets 1.0.1 from the child lock, not the parent’s 1.0.0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved package installation when nested lockfiles contain different versions of the same explicitly requested latest package. The installer now selects the version from the nearest applicable lockfile instead of reporting an ambiguity. When no nearer lockfile provides a version, it can use a parent lockfile; existing ambiguity errors remain for cases that cannot be resolved this way. This makes installations from nested project directories more predictable.

…iguous

An explicit request with no config source, such as mise install aube@latest
or an install dependency, reads every lockfile. Nested configs pinning the
tool to different versions made that fail with "lockfile contains multiple
resolutions". The nearest lockfile that decides the request now wins.

📝 Walkthrough

Merged lockfile lookups now retry ambiguous request bindings against lockfiles in precedence order. The first lockfile that resolves the request supplies the selected version. Unit and end-to-end tests cover nearest-lockfile selection and nested tiny@latest resolution.

get_locked_version reuses the lookup logic and retries ambiguous merged requests against lockfiles from nearest to farthest. Unit tests cover nearest selection, parent fallback, no match, and ambiguous candidates. The end-to-end test checks that a child lockfile selects tiny@1.0.1 without a “multiple resolutions” error.

The implementation has no established failure, but the new E2E test does not exercise nearest-lockfile selection. Correct the fixture to protect that behavior; this is a bounded merge risk.

The changed E2E test uses an unconfigured mise install tiny@latest request. The repository’s request builder assigns LockfileScope::NoOwner to such requests, and get_locked_version returns before the merged lockfile lookup. Therefore, the tiny@1.0.1 assertion does not cover nearest-lockfile selection.

A configured request with a pathless source uses LockfileScope::Default and reaches the merged fallback. The fixture should configure tiny through a pathless source, such as the environment-backed tool source, while still issuing the tiny@latest request. An existing end-to-end test for this exact configured pathless-source flow was not established by the supplied inspection.
