Fixes #14317

dnf:@development-tools in [bootstrap.packages] is now treated as a dnf package group. Before, mise bootstrap packages status ran rpm -q @development-tools, which never matches, so a group that dnf had installed successfully was always reported as missing.

[bootstrap.packages]
"dnf:@development-tools" = "latest"
  • Status: checks dnf group list --installed --hidden for the group id (with -v on dnf4, which only prints ids that way).
  • Install: dnf install -y @development-tools.
  • Upgrade: dnf group upgrade -y --refresh development-tools, run alongside the ordinary package upgrade.
  • Environment groups (@^name) fail status with a clear "not supported" error.

Unit tests cover the install/upgrade arguments and both dnf4 and dnf5 group-list output. I could not run this against a real dnf here, so the group-list parsing is checked only against sample output.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes bootstrap package install/status/upgrade on Linux hosts using dnf, including sudo-invoked commands and parsing of dnf group list output across dnf4 and dnf5.

Overview
DNF package groups (names like dnf:@development-tools) in [bootstrap.packages] are handled as comps groups instead of RPMs, so status no longer incorrectly reports installed groups as missing after rpm -q.

Parsing: For dnf, a leading @ is treated as part of the group name, not a version pin; @latest on groups is ignored. Environment groups (@^name) are rejected with a clear error, and version pins on groups are rejected.

Runtime behavior: Groups are checked with dnf group list --installed (dnf4 vs dnf5 output parsing), installed via dnf install @…, and upgraded via dnf group upgrade alongside normal dnf upgrade for RPMs. Docs add a Package groups section (latest only, no @^).

Unit tests cover spec parsing, CLI args, and sample dnf4/dnf5 group-list output.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • DNF now supports installing, upgrading, and checking the installation status of package groups.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Package groups are handled separately from regular RPM packages during upgrades, preserving regular package behavior.
    • Unsupported environment groups are rejected, and errors from checking installed groups are reported.
  • Documentation
    • Documented package group usage, including the requirement to use latest and the lack of support for environment groups.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

DNF package handling now recognizes requests that begin with @. It installs and upgrades groups with DNF group commands and checks their installed state through DNF. Ordinary package checks and upgrades continue to use RPM-related commands.

Changes

DNF package groups

Layer / File(s) Summary
Group command handling
src/system/packages/dnf.rs, docs/bootstrap/packages/dnf.md
Group requests keep the @ prefix for installation and use dnf group upgrade. Package and group upgrades run separately. The documentation describes group declaration syntax, commands, the required "latest" value, and unsupported environment groups.
Installed group detection
src/system/packages/dnf.rs
Installed-state checks split group and RPM requests, query each separately, and restore the request order, including duplicates. The group query selects output handling based on the DNF version. Tests cover DNF4 and DNF5 output formats and group command arguments.

This change adds DNF group support for install, upgrade and status checks. No actionable merge-blocking risk is identified. Checking the group-list output format on a real Fedora host is still a sensible follow-up.

Fix the order restore when groups and packages have the same name.

sort_by_key matches by p.name == s.request.name. This is correct only while all names are unique. Duplicate requests, or the same name at different versions, all map to the first position. The sort is stable, so the effect is limited. Sorting by position is also O(n²). Prefer a rebuild that avoids both problems. Map each request to a status by index, or skip the reorder if the caller already deduplicates names.

Summary

Adds dnf package-group support to bootstrap packages.

  • DNF bootstrap entries can now check and update package groups.

jdx accepted the group-only upgrade message saying “already up to date” even when member packages changed. They deferred a fix because it would require driver changes beyond this PR.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.
