mise prune treated a tool as unused when a tracked config referenced it only through a task, so it deleted versions that mise run would need again.

[tasks.hello]
run = "true"
tools = { dummy = "1.0.0" }

Before, mise prune --dry-run listed dummy@1.0.0 as prunable. Now the config's task tools count as needed and the version is kept; unreferenced versions are still pruned.

Tools declared in file-based task scripts (#MISE tools=...) are not covered yet, only tasks defined inline in config files.

Fixes #14325

Tested with a new e2e test (test_prune_task_tools).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

AI-assisted — Tool: claude-code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: 2.1.295.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes which installed versions prune retains; incorrect layering could still prune needed tools or retain extras, but behavior is intentionally conservative for templated and ambiguous configs.

Overview
mise prune now treats inline task tools as in-use for tracked configs, so versions only referenced by tasks (including via extends task templates) are no longer marked prunable.

Prune’s needed-version pass adds task_tool_requests, which resolves each config’s tasks like mise run (merging task_templates from the project’s config stack and globals, not from the cwd). Concrete task tool pins are resolved into kept versions; templated task tool versions trigger keep-all-installations for that tool because prune may run outside the project context.

A new e2e script test_prune_task_tools covers templates, parent/.mise/global/conf.d layering, and templated versions. File-based task #MISE tools= directives are still out of scope.

Walkthrough

Tracked-config tool collection now includes tools declared on tasks. The end-to-end test checks that mise prune --dry-run preserves a task-referenced version and reports an unreferenced version.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

3781116e6f4c vs 1cfa50cf9822 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
