With shims on PATH, command -v node succeeds even when node is not installed or not active in the current directory, because the shim exists. Scripts that use command -v as an installed check get false positives. which and whence behave the same way. This came up in discussion 14327.

This adds a "Checking whether a tool is installed" section to the shims page. It keeps command -v and asks mise which only when the result is a shim, so users without mise never reach that branch:

have() {
    p=$(command -v "$1") || return 1
    case $p in
    */shims/*) mise which "$1" >/dev/null 2>&1 ;;
    *) return 0 ;;
    esac
}

have prettier || echo "prettier is not installed"

The section also notes that an unresolved shim can still fall through to a same-named executable later on PATH, and that setting not_found_system_fallback and not_found_auto_install to false makes it fail instead.

Docs only; no behavior change. Validated with the focused hk check (prettier, markdownlint), mise run docs:build, and git diff --check. I checked the have branching logic against a fake shim directory but did not run it against a real mise install.

Overview
Adds a Checking whether a tool is installed section to the shims docs, explaining that command -v, which, and whence can falsely report success when only a mise shim is on PATH.

Documents a portable have() shell helper that keeps command -v and only calls command mise which when the resolved path is a symlink to mise, so scripts work for teammates who do not use mise. The section also calls out Unix symlink shims only (not Windows), that command wrappers look like shims but mise which does not resolve wrapper names, and that unresolved shims may still run a same-named binary later on PATH unless not_found_system_fallback and not_found_auto_install are disabled.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for checking whether tools are installed when shell command checks encounter shims, including a shell function that verifies tools managed by mise.
    • Explained limitations of the check, including shell and platform support, how command wrappers are handled, and how unresolved shims may fall back to another executable on PATH.
    • Documented settings that can prevent fallback, while noting that lazy tools may still provide the command.

`command -v` finds a shim even when the tool is not installed or not active.
Document keeping `command -v` and asking `mise which` when it finds a shim.

Walkthrough

The shim documentation explains why command lookup can report a tool as present when it is unavailable. It adds a shell helper that uses mise which for shim paths and documents the helper’s limitations and shim fallback settings.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

16dcbc074d31 vs 76c646679585 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
