feat(bootstrap): add apt repositories and PPAs with [bootstrap.apt.sources] - #14306
Conversation

A PPA entry without a fingerprint accepted any key already on disk, so pointing the same name at another PPA kept the old key and broke apt-get update. A PPA entry with several fingerprints is now rejected up front instead of failing at apply time. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4NPXNY0A8MNB7H128D5QR0Q
…ase suite apt-get update reports a repository it cannot fetch only as a warning, and the next run saw current source files and skipped the refresh. mise now compares `apt-get indextargets` with and without release info, refreshes while a declared source has no lists, and warns when the refresh still could not fetch them. Vendor repositories default their suite to the Ubuntu base codename on derivatives such as Linux Mint, as PPAs already did, and the schema limits a PPA to a single fingerprint. A machine that already had Ubuntu's git kept it after the git-core PPA was declared, so `mise bootstrap --adopt` on a fresh image never got the PPA's git without a separate `upgrade`. An unpinned `apt:` package now counts as out of date while apt's candidate comes from a declared source and the installed version does not, and apply installs it. mise records each move in its state directory: once a PPA publishes a newer build, the one installed from it is known only to dpkg, just like an old image's distro build, so apt alone cannot tell them apart. A newer upload is still left to `upgrade`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4NSAQ1FP6Z4VQMV6QWSNF6P
…m deps Automatic system dependency installs built their apt requests without [bootstrap.apt.sources], unlike `packages use`, so a dependency from a declared repository could not be installed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4NSDJN1580SDYD7NDPD8J3F

Only packages mise moved were recorded, so a fresh PPA install, or one already at the PPA's build, looked like a distro leftover once the PPA published a newer build, and the next bootstrap upgraded it. Runs that may change the machine now record any declared package whose installed version a declared source offers, after installing and when checking. Tool system dependency installs add declared sources only when mise will not prompt, so declining the prompt leaves /etc/apt untouched. …ce fails An unreachable key URL or a fingerprint mismatch in one source returned out of the whole step, so later sources were never added, the lists were never refreshed, and no apt package was installed. Each source now fails on its own; the failures are reported with the run's others and still fail it, as one package manager's failure already does. …fresh A failed `apt-get update` after the sources returned early, dropping the per-source errors already collected and the bookkeeping the apt manager needs for the rest of the run. Origins are now matched, and recorded, as URL plus suite. An armored signing key that starts with a comment or a byte order mark was read as binary and failed to parse. Sources were written, their keys trusted, and the lists refreshed before the "install X?" prompt, so declining it still changed /etc/apt. Without --yes on a terminal, mise now asks once before changing any source, as it does before applying files, and a no leaves every source as it was. The record of packages moved to a source belongs to the user running mise; the docs now say so instead of promising once per machine. …est (#14371) <!-- entire-trail-link-start --> https://entire.io/gh/jdx/mise/trails/687 <!-- entire-trail-link-end --> `cli/test_bootstrap_apt_sources` fails whenever it shares an e2e container with `cli/test_system_install_apt`, which is what blocked the 2026.10.9 release PR (#14297, `e2e-linux-4`). The test asserts that `mise bootstrap packages apply --dry-run` prints `apt-get install -y -- bc`. `test_system_install_apt` ends by installing `bc`, so in a shared container the dry run correctly prints `mise apt: 1 package(s) already installed` and the assertion fails. Whether the two tests share a container depends on how the tests are split across tranches, which is why the test passed when #14306 added it. The test now uses `apt:mise-apt-sources-test-nonexistent`, a package that is never installed, the same approach `test_bootstrap_compose` takes. Only the test changes; there is no behavior change. Validation: `mise run test:e2e cli/test_bootstrap_apt_sources` passes locally against a fresh debug build, including the `apt-get install -y -- mise-apt-sources-test-nonexistent` assertion. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) *AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: claude-code_2-1-295_agent.* <!-- CURSOR_SUMMARY --> --- > [!NOTE] > **Low Risk** > E2e test fixture change only; no runtime or bootstrap logic changes. > > **Overview** > Fixes **order-dependent e2e failures** when `cli/test_bootstrap_apt_sources` runs in a container where `bc` was already installed (e.g. after `cli/test_system_install_apt`). > > The bootstrap apt-sources dry-run test now expects install of a **deliberately nonexistent** package (`mise-apt-sources-test-nonexistent`) instead of `bc`, so the dry-run log always shows `apt-get install -y -- …` rather than “already installed”. **Test-only**; bootstrap/apt behavior is unchanged. > > Reviewed by [Cursor Bugbot](https://cursor.com/bugbot) for commit 2a610d7. Ubuntu's own git, fish, and many other packages lag well behind upstream, and vendor tools such as Docker ship from their own apt repositories. Until now, getting either into a bootstrap meant a
pre-packageshook that ranadd-apt-repositoryor wrote source files and keys by hand (discussion). You can now declare those repositories next to the packages that come from them:
On Ubuntu 24.04 this installs git 2.55 from the PPA (noble ships 2.43), fish 4.9, and docker-ce-cli.
Behavior
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mise-<name>.sources(deb822) withSigned-Bypointing at/etc/apt/keyrings/mise-<name>.gpg. apt trusts that key only for that repository, unlike a key dropped intotrusted.gpg.d.keyserver.ubuntu.com.software-properties-commonis not needed. Afingerprintpins the key and skips the Launchpad lookup. PPAs are added only on Ubuntu or on releases that setUBUNTU_CODENAME(for example Linux Mint, which uses its Ubuntu base codename). Elsewhere they are skipped, so one config also works on Debian.uris, key, andfingerprint.suitesdefaults to the release codename (on derivatives such as Mint, the Ubuntu base codename), andcomponentsdefaults tomain(none for a flat.../suite).architecturesis optional.mise bootstrap(after thepre-packageshook),mise bootstrap packages apply/upgrade, andpackages use apt:…. Dry runs included. When a source changes, mise runsapt-get updateonce and skips the refresh that install or upgrade would otherwise do. apt only warns (and exits 0) when it cannot fetch a repository, so mise checksapt-get indextargetsafterwards: it warns if a declared source still has no lists, and keeps refreshing on later runs until it does.--yeson a terminal, mise asks once (apt: add or update sources …?) before changing any source, as it does before applying files. A no leaves every source as it was. A source that fails (unreachable key URL, fingerprint mismatch) is reported with the run's other failures; the remaining sources and packages still apply.apt:package now counts as out of date (version mismatchin status) while apt's candidate comes from a declared source and the installed version does not, and a plainmise bootstrapinstalls it. Runs that may change the machine record, in the running user's mise state directory (apt-sources-moved, keyed by URL and suite), every declared package seen installed from a declared source, whether mise moved it there, installed it fresh, or found it already there. Status queries and dry runs record nothing. Once a PPA publishes a newer build, the one installed from it is known only to dpkg, just like an old image's distro build, so apt alone can't tell them apart. A later upload is left toupgrade, as for anylatestpackage. Version pins and arch-qualified names opt out. A dry run on a machine without the source yet can't show the move, because apt has no lists for it.system_deps = "auto"or--yes), so declining the prompt never writes to/etc/apt.mise bootstrap unapplynames the leftover file, the same way it does for packages and repos.Validation
gpg, so signing a local repository there was not practical.mise bootstrap --only packagesadds the PPA and installs git 2.55.0 in the same run. A second run is a no-op, and a later manual downgrade is left alone.trixiesuite.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.295.

[bootstrap.apt.sources]so bootstrap can declare PPAs and vendor apt repositories next toapt:packages, instead of hand-written hooks oradd-apt-repository.For each source, mise writes deb822 files under
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/with per-repoSigned-Bykeyrings in/etc/apt/keyrings/, fetches signing keys over HTTP(S) (Launchpad + keyserver for PPAs), and keeps only keys matching declared full fingerprints. Sources are applied before apt installs/upgrades (including dry-run plans); interactive runs can prompt via newInstallOpts.ask. When a declared repo offers a newer candidate than the distro-installed package, apt status treats it as version mismatch once (tracked in state) so bootstrap can move e.g. Ubuntugitonto a PPA.Supporting changes: in-process
parse_keyringinmise-utilgpg, config/schema/docs, e2e dry-run test, and wiring throughpackages use/ auto system-deps (sources only when non-interactive).Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit f9614b5. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
