With go in idiomatic_version_file_enable_tools, a go.mod like this triggered the go-directive deprecation warning:

module example.com/app

go 1.27.1

The warning said to add a toolchain go1.27.1 line, but go mod tidy deletes a toolchain line that matches the go line (golang/go#75331). So following the advice left a go.mod that tidy rewrote, go mod tidy CI checks failed, and the warning came back (discussion).

Go treats those two files as the same. Its toolchain docs say "a go.mod that says go 1.21.0 with no toolchain line is interpreted as if it had a toolchain go1.21.0 line." mise now reads them the same way: with no toolchain line, an exact go X.Y.Z line selects that Go version without a warning. This applies to go.mod and go.work.

File Before After
go 1.27.1 1.27.1, deprecation warning 1.27.1, no warning
go 1.27.0 + toolchain go1.27.1 1.27.1 1.27.1
go 1.27 latest 1.27.x, deprecation warning unchanged; stops being read in 2026.11.0
go.work with only go 1.27.1 nothing 1.27.1
go 1.27.1 + toolchain default 1.27.1, deprecation warning unchanged

idiomatic_version_file_ignore_minimum_versions still skips go 1.27, but it no longer skips an exact go 1.27.1.

Why an exception to the minimum-version rule

mise doesn't read fields that only declare a minimum, such as package.json engines. Strictly, Go treats both go and toolchain as minimums: with the default GOTOOLCHAIN=auto it runs a newer local toolchain when one is installed. mise reads these lines anyway because the go command writes the version it runs into them (go mod init, go get, go work init), so they record the Go the project was last developed with. go 1.27 without a patch names no release, so it stays deprecated. A toolchain line that isn't a release, such as toolchain default, cancels the implied toolchain, as it does in Go.

Validation

  • Unit tests for go.mod and go.work parsing cover exact and partial go lines, with and without a toolchain line, and with the ignore setting.
  • e2e/core/test_go_from_gomod and e2e/core/test_go_from_gowork check the resolved version and that no deprecation warning is printed.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes idiomatic Go version resolution for common go mod tidy layouts; behavior is well-tested but affects default toolchain selection for many projects.

Overview
Aligns mise’s Go version detection with how the go command treats go.mod / go.work: when there is no toolchain line, an exact go X.Y.Z directive is read as the project toolchain (same as an implied toolchain goX.Y.Z), without the deprecated minimum-only warning.

toolchain goX.Y.Z still wins when present; go X.Y (no patch) stays the deprecated minimum path until 2026.11.0. go.work now resolves version from an exact go line too. idiomatic_version_file_ignore_minimum_versions still ignores go X.Y but no longer ignores exact go X.Y.Z.

Docs (docs/lang/go.md, docs/dev-tools/versions.md, settings.toml) and tests (unit + e2e) are updated for the new behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Go version detection now recognizes an exact go X.Y.Z declaration in go.mod or go.work when no toolchain declaration is present. A toolchain declaration takes precedence.
    • Workspace version selection follows the active workspace; a minimum-only go X.Y declaration in a workspace does not select a version.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified how Go declarations are interpreted, including exact releases, minimum versions, and workspace precedence.
    • Documented that reading minimum-only Go versions from go.mod is deprecated and will stop in mise 2026.11.0.

Go reads `go 1.27.1` with no toolchain line as `toolchain go1.27.1`, and
`go mod tidy` deletes a toolchain line that matches the go line. mise
read only the toolchain line, so following its deprecation advice left
a go.mod that tidy rewrote, and the warning came back.

Read an exact `go X.Y.Z` line as the toolchain when there is no
toolchain line, in both go.mod and go.work. Only `go X.Y` stays
deprecated.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

006d36e26e78 vs 65df970fe839 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
