security(install): enforce pinned checksums and node signatures instead of falling back - #14899
Conversation
…urce builds Three ways around the checks on a Node.js download, all decided by the host that serves it: - A 404 for SHASUMS256.txt.sig skipped the OpenPGP check for every release, so a host that replaced the archive and SHASUMS256.txt only had to withhold the signature. A missing signature now fails the install, except on unofficial-builds, which signs nothing. Mirrors that do not copy the signatures, and the few early releases that never had one, need node.gpg_verify=false, as the error says. The error does not mention 404, so fetch_binary cannot read it as a missing archive. - mise lock copied checksums out of SHASUMS256.txt without checking its signature, and an install that finds a checksum in the lockfile does not look one up, so the signature was never checked for locked installs. mise lock now verifies the signature (once per SHASUMS256.txt) and, when it does not verify, records the URL without a checksum and warns, leaving the install to check the signature and fail. - When the precompiled archive that mise.lock pins answered 404, a plain `mise install` compiled the source tarball instead, which the locked checksum does not cover, and re-pinned mise.lock to it. That now fails like --locked does and points at `mise lock node`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M5M7WTD3F1J5FEMBPD5E5PEK
…ost publishes set_lockfile_info stored the checksum resolved during the install (builds.txt on builds.hex.pm, or the GitHub release digest) over the one mise.lock pins for the same URL and install kind, so outside --locked the download was compared with what the host says today and the pin was never checked. A resolved checksum now only fills a missing one, as in core:go; a different artifact still starts from the resolved value. … installed With a `checksum` option (what a packageManager hash becomes) the npm backend verified a download of the single-version tarball, but with a lockfile dependency graph it then ran a frozen install of whatever tarball and integrity the graph names, which it resolved from the packument and never compared with the pin. A registry that answered the two documents differently got its tarball installed. The graph's integrity for the root package must now be a digest of the archive that passed the checksum, so aube's own integrity check covers the bytes installed. …missing or altered A checksum mismatch against the artifact bundle mise.lock pins, a 404 on the bundle or a release without the bundle all fell back to building the tag from source, which nothing checks, and exited 0, also under --locked. While the lockfile has a bundle checksum for this platform, those errors now fail the install. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M5M7Y22BC79PV0XDZV22EX8R
…nload The http backend unpacked and renamed the download into place before it compared it with mise.lock. For versions containing `/`, `:` or `\` the install directory carries a hash suffix that the generic cleanup does not remove, so a download that failed the check stayed installed and later commands used it. The checksum is now checked before extraction, as in the s3 backend. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M5M7YMA5S4ZAQY7YWAZS3WDM
`mise tool bun` and `mise tool deno` advertise a sha256 check, but an install only compared the archive with a checksum mise.lock already held. Without one it now fetches the checksum Bun publishes in SHASUMS256.txt or Deno in the .sha256sum file, as mise lock does, and verifies the archive against it; when none is published it warns and continues as before. Each attempt to verify a detached signature hashes the whole signed content, and the downloaded .sig decided how many attempts there were: any number of signature packets, each with no issuer (tried against every key) or naming every key. A few kilobytes of bogus signatures kept an install busy for minutes. The attempts are now capped at one per trusted key and subkey. [High impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new blocking issue remains. SummaryThis PR makes installers honor pinned checksums and requires Node release signatures. The latest changes close the Swift no-matching-binary fallback and make Bun and Deno reject missing checksum entries and fetch errors other than 404.

`spm` row to clarify that `spm` and `core:swift` record URLs for artifact
installs, but locked mode does not require them; keep the artifact-only scope
and npm/PyPI dependency-graph checks accurate.
Review comments at @src/backend/spm.rs:
- Line 309: Update the Ok(false) handling for try_install_artifactbundle in the
caller so artifactbundle_locked also blocks the install_from_source fallback
when no bundle binary matches the target. Preserve the existing
artifactbundle_required behavior.

…wift target A bundle that verified against mise.lock but has no binary for the current Swift target still fell back to building the tag from source, which the lock does not cover. With a locked bundle checksum that now fails too, pointing at artifactbundle = false. An unlocked install that falls back the same way no longer records the unused bundle's URL and checksum, so its own lockfile does not later demand that bundle. The mise.lock docs no longer say spm and core:swift are exempt from a locked URL because they record none. …unusable Without a pinned checksum, bun and deno installed the archive unchecked when the publisher's checksum file could not be fetched or did not list it. A checksum file that exists must now list the archive, and any failure to fetch it other than a 404 fails the install. A 404 means the release never published one; that file would come from the same host as the archive and is unsigned, so those releases still install, with a warning. Several installers let a download host get around a checksum or signature that should have been enforced: either by answering 404, or because the installer preferred the host's own checksum. With this PR, a pinned or published checksum is checked, and a missing signature fails the install instead of being skipped.
What changes
SHASUMS256.txt.signow failsmise installandmise lockinstead of skipping GPG verification. The unofficial-builds host, which signs nothing and serves the musl builds, is exempt.mise lockverifies the signature before recording checksums. If verification fails it warns and records the entry without a checksum, so the next install verifies the signature itself.mise.lockpins the prebuilt archive and the host answers 404, the install fails and points atmise lock node, instead of quietly compiling the source tarball.mise.lockpins wins over the one builds.hex.pm publishes for the same artifact.mise.lockpins a bundle checksum for this platform, a missing or altered artifact bundle fails the install instead of falling back to a source build.mise.lockchecksum is checked before unpacking, as the s3 backend already does..sigfile full of bogus signatures can't stall an install.Compatibility
Node mirrors that don't copy the
.sigfiles, and a few early releases that never had one (for example 4.0.0 and 5.12.0), now neednode.gpg_verify = false. The error message says so.Validation
Each fix has a regression test that fails without it: unit tests, plus 7 new or extended e2e tests. Related node, npm, erlang lockfile and tool-stub e2e tests pass, as do clippy with
