fix(lock): keep a registry-only aube graph when a lockfile is not trusted - #15401
MISE_SAFE=1 MISE_LOCKED=1 mise install npm:prettier failed with "no embedded-aube dependency graph in the revision 2 lockfile; run mise lock to repair it", and mise lock could not repair it. The lockfile already had the graph. Since 2026.11.0, safe mode treats every project lockfile as untrusted (#15235), and an untrusted lockfile dropped the aube graph along with its URLs.
# mise.toml
[tools]
"npm:prettier" = "3.3.3"
After mise lock, MISE_SAFE=1 MISE_LOCKED=1 mise install now installs it. The graph pins integrity hashes and aube fetches from the user's registry, so it is kept when it names no place to download from. It is still dropped, as before, when a package has a tarball URL, git or directory source, or the importers have a link: or file: dependency, since only a trusted lockfile may choose those.
This also applies to untrusted projects outside safe mode. Related to #15363; the checksum-only core backends are in #15392.
Not covered: mise ls --missing can still report an npm tool as missing after a safe-mode install, which needs its own fix.
AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: claude-code_2-1-309_agent.
Note
Medium Risk
Changes lockfile trust/safe-mode sanitization and npm install validation; incorrect allowlist logic could retain malicious download hints or reject valid registry locks.
Overview
Untrusted lockfiles (including under MISE_SAFE) no longer always strip aube npm dependency graphs. Registry-only graphs that pin packages via integrity and fetch through the normal registry are retained; graphs that embed tarball URLs, git/path/link sources, aliases, bad snapshots, or other non-registry shapes are still dropped, validated by new aube_graph_names_only_registry.
The npm backend’s validate_aube_lock now also requires the importer’s resolved root version to match the locked tool version (ignoring peer suffixes, git specs, and non-semver dist-tags), so install cannot drift from what the lock names.
Coverage adds unit tests for the graph allowlist and an e2e case for npm:prettier installing under safe mode with a locked graph.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Safe-mode installations can retain eligible untrusted lockfile data for registry packages with integrity hashes, including packages used by prettier.
Lockfile data with invalid dependency references, aliases, missing package data or integrity hashes, or unsupported sources such as tarball URLs, links, Git sources, snapshot URLs, or overrides remains excluded.
Lockfile dependency requirements are checked against requested package requirements, and concrete non-Git versions are checked against the requested version before installation.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Untrusted lockfile processing now retains an Aube dependency graph only when it passes registry-only validation. npm lock validation also checks a present resolved root package version for non-Git sources. Tests cover graph filtering and locked Prettier installation in safe mode.
Aube graphs are retained only when they meet registry-only validation checks. Unit tests cover accepted registry graphs and rejected graphs with non-registry or incomplete data.
Validate the resolved root version src/backend/npm.rs
For non-Git sources, npm lock validation checks a present resolved root version against the tool version after peer suffix removal.
jdx/mise#15363: Reports that safe mode drops an Aube graph and blocks a locked npm tool installation. This change retains qualifying registry-only graphs; the reported core backend failures and mise ls --missing behavior remain outside its scope.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review e0f88
Safe-mode installs with an embedded Aube graph now work for registry-only graphs with integrity hashes. A small hardening gap may remain: an importer dependency is not required to have a matching integrity-pinned package entry. Worth tightening or confirming before merge, but likely bounded.

Assert the installed Prettier version in the locked npm case.
The npm:prettier check uses assert_succeed, which checks only the exit status. If the installed Prettier release differed from 3.3.3, this assertion would still pass. Use assert_contains with 3.3.3, as the github:mvdan/sh case above it does. This adds coverage for the pinned version. It does not indicate a current failure.
Suggested fix
-assert_succeed "MISE_SAFE=1 mise x npm:prettier -- prettier --version"+assert_contains "MISE_SAFE=1 mise x npm:prettier -- prettier --version" "3.3.3"

A package can include aliasOf: attacker-package alongside a valid integrity hash. This filter retains it, but Aube fetches attacker-package under the original package’s install name. The provenance verifier also filters by the fetched name, so it does not check the requested package in this case. Reject aliasOf in untrusted graphs. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Require a package entry for every snapshot.
A snapshot can name a dependency that has no entry in packages. The filter retains that graph, and Aube constructs the dependency with no integrity hash. With Aube’s default settings, installation can then import the dependency without a pinned digest. Require each snapshot to resolve to an integrity-bearing package entry, including peer-suffixed keys. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check the resolved root version against the locked version.
An untrusted graph can set the root specifier to 3.3.3 and its version to 3.4.0. Both pass this filter, and validate_aube_lock checks only the specifier. Aube can therefore install 3.4.0 for a tool locked as 3.3.3. Check the root resolved version against the lock entry, allowing its peer suffix. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Addressed the three outside-diff findings in 786ae07: a package with aliasOf drops the graph; every snapshot key and snapshot dependency must have a packages entry (peer suffixes stripped); and validate_aube_lock now checks that the root resolves to the locked version, apart from a peer suffix. Unit tests cover the alias and orphan-snapshot cases.
