[daemons.<name>] task = "worker" failed with daemon srv runs unknown task "worker" when the task was a file task such as .mise/tasks/worker.sh, even though mise run worker and mise task worker resolve it. Users had to write task = "worker.sh".

The daemon task validator did an exact key lookup on the task map. It now matches task names the same way mise run does, so worker finds worker.sh, and an unknown name still errors.

[daemons.srv]
task = "worker"   # .mise/tasks/worker.sh

Tested with a new case in e2e/cli/test_daemons.

Fixes #14740

Note

Low Risk
Narrow change to daemon task name validation only; behavior matches existing task resolution with a targeted e2e test.

Overview
Daemon task = "..." validation no longer requires the script extension for file tasks (e.g. worker now matches mise-tasks/worker.sh), aligning with mise run and mise task.

validate_tasks in glue.rs switches from an exact map key check on tasks_with_aliases() to build_task_ref_map plus get_matching, so resolution follows the same rules as running a task. Unknown names still fail with the existing error.

An e2e case in test_daemons covers a daemon pointing at a file task by basename on dry-run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed daemon task validation so file-backed tasks are recognized without their script-file extension, preventing false “unknown task” errors in dry runs.

📝 Walkthrough

Daemon task validation now matches file tasks by their name without requiring the script extension. An end-to-end dry-run test covers a daemon configured with worker and a task script named worker.sh.

Changes: Daemon task resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Match daemon task references
src/daemons/glue.rs, e2e/cli/test_daemons
validate_tasks uses GetMatchingExt to match daemon task names against configured tasks. The end-to-end test checks that a dry run accepts worker when the script is worker.sh.

A daemon configured with this derived qualified alias can pass validation but fail when launched. The issue is limited to that alias form and can be avoided by using the raw alias or task name, so merge risk is bounded.

Explanation

The change satisfies #14740. src/daemons/glue.rs now builds a task reference map from config.tasks() and calls get_matching(task), instead of requiring an exact internal task-map key. This allows task = "worker" to match mise-tasks/worker.sh without the extension. The existing unknown-task failure remains in the validator. e2e/cli/test_daemons adds coverage for the extension-less file task, while the existing test covers an unknown task.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #14740. They modify only daemon task validation and add a focused end-to-end test for extension-less file-task resolution. No unrelated task-resolution behavior or unrelated files are changed.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

5f781d6f9989 vs 21b213b3c1be · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
