vfox backend plugins can now be installed from a signed packslip archive, using the vfox-backend: prefix. Previously mise plugins install vfox-backend:foo 'packslip:owner/repo#1.0.0' failed with packslip plugin sources require the vfox plugin type, while the same entry in [plugins] resolved to the backend type and then hit a similar rejection.

mise plugins install vfox-backend:my-backend 'packslip:your-org/my-backend#1.0.0'
[plugins]
"vfox-backend:my-backend" = "packslip:your-org/my-backend#1.0.0"

The CLI and [plugins] now agree. An explicit asdf: or package: prefix is still rejected, and the error now says "vfox or vfox-backend".

The archive contract is unchanged: a backend plugin's archive still declares extensions.mise.plugin = "vfox", since that names the archive format. mise tells a backend plugin apart by hooks/backend_install.lua. Both docs pages say so.

Closes discussion #14718.

Validation

  • test_plugins_packslip and test_plugins_packslip_unprefixed pass. The unprefixed test now covers the vfox-backend: prefix on the CLI and in [plugins].
  • The signed fixture is a tool plugin, not a backend, so the e2e covers prefix acceptance only. A signed backend fixture can't be produced locally.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean.

Note

Low Risk
Narrow change to packslip plugin type validation and install routing; archive verification and signer checks are unchanged.

Overview
Packslip plugin installs now accept the vfox-backend: type prefix on the CLI and in [plugins], alongside vfox: (and unprefixed entries that still resolve to vfox). Explicit asdf: / other types remain rejected; the error text now says packslip sources require vfox or vfox-backend.

When the source is packslip:…, mise only forces PluginType::Vfox if the user did not specify vfox-backend:—so backend plugins can be installed from signed archives without being mis-typed as tool plugins.

Docs explain that backend packslip archives still use extensions.mise.plugin = "vfox" (format name) while mise distinguishes backends via hooks/backend_install.lua. E2e coverage adds [plugins] and mise plugins install cases for the new prefix.

📝 Walkthrough

Packslip plugin sources now accept the vfox-backend type in addition to vfox. End-to-end tests and documentation cover backend plugin installation through configuration and the command line.

The new prefix is exercised with a signed tool-plugin archive, not a signed backend archive, leaving successful backend-hook recognition unverified. Add a backend archive fixture or explicitly accept this gap before relying on the new installation path.

Add a signed backend archive fixture to the vfox-backend tests.

The changed cases reuse the signed vfox-bfs tool-plugin archive. Its archive contains no hooks/backend_install.lua, and the assertions check only installation files and the manifest version. These tests can pass if signed backend archives are rejected, misidentified, or their backend hook is not recognized.

Add a signed backend archive with extensions.mise.plugin = "vfox" and hooks/backend_install.lua. Serve it from test/fixtures/packslip-vfox/server.py, then use it in both the [plugins] and CLI cases and assert backend-specific behavior.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

27b8a9eaaef9 vs eaa250826243 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
