mise lock and latest version listing now work against a PyPI index that authenticates through a keyring, such as Azure Artifacts with artifacts-keyring. Before, mise install succeeded because uv read the password from its keyring provider, but mise's own index requests sent no credentials and failed with 401 Unauthorized (discussion #14724).

Set the new pypi.keyring_provider to subprocess and write the registry URL with a username and no password:

[settings.pypi]
keyring_provider = "subprocess"
registry_url = "https://VssSessionToken@pkgs.dev.azure.com/org/project/_packaging/feed/pypi/simple/{}/"

When the URL has a username but no password, mise runs keyring get <url> <username>, the same lookup uv's keyring-provider = "subprocess" makes. It sends the printed password as HTTP Basic credentials when it lists versions and when mise lock reads a release's requires-python. The password is never written to the lockfile or the version cache.

  • pypi.keyring_provider accepts disabled (the default) or subprocess; env var MISE_PYPI_KEYRING_PROVIDER.
  • The keyring executable must be on PATH. If it is missing or has no entry, mise sends the request without credentials, so the 401 is unchanged.
  • URLs that already carry a password, and netrc credentials, behave as before.

The lookup lives in the pypi backend rather than the shared HTTP client, so no other backend is affected. get_html_with_headers is added to the client so the simple-index HTML request can carry the header.

Tested with a new e2e test (test_pipx_keyring_provider) that runs a local simple index requiring Basic auth and a fake keyring script. It checks that the request returns 401 without the setting, returns versions with it, and returns 401 again when the keyring has no entry. cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings and mise run lint pass. Not tested against a real Azure Artifacts feed or on Windows.

Closes nothing directly; follows up discussion #14724.

Note

Medium Risk
Touches credential handling for private indexes (subprocess keyring, Basic auth headers); scope is limited to the pypi/pipx backend and is opt-in via settings.

Overview
Adds pypi.keyring_provider (disabled / subprocess, MISE_PYPI_KEYRING_PROVIDER) so mise can authenticate to private PyPI indexes the same way uv does when the registry URL has a username but no password (e.g. Azure Artifacts with VssSessionToken@...).

With subprocess, mise runs keyring get <index-url> <username>, sends the result as HTTP Basic auth for pipx version listing (JSON and PEP 503/691 simple indexes), latest lookups, and mise lock paths that fetch release metadata or simple-index HTML. Userinfo is stripped from the request URL so an empty password is not sent. uv lock gets UV_KEYRING_PROVIDER=subprocess because --no-config skips uv.toml. Passwords are not stored in lockfiles or the version cache.

The shared HTTP client gains get_html_with_headers (and get_html now routes through host auth + that helper). Logic stays in pipx/keyring.rs, not the global HTTP layer. Docs/schema/settings and an e2e test with a fake index and keyring script cover the happy path and 401 when the provider is off or the keyring has no entry.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional subprocess keyring support for authenticating to private PyPI indexes when listing pipx versions and creating locks. When an index URL includes a username but no password, credentials can be retrieved on demand; passwords are not stored in lockfiles or the version cache.
    • If the keyring command or matching entry is unavailable, requests proceed without keyring credentials.
    • Added guidance and a configuration example for setting up keyring authentication with a private PyPI index.

`mise lock` and version listing queried a keyring-authenticated PyPI index
with no credentials and failed with 401, while `mise install` worked because
uv resolved the password from its keyring provider. Add
`pypi.keyring_provider = "subprocess"`: when the registry URL has a username
and no password, run `keyring get <url> <username>` and send the result as
HTTP Basic credentials, as uv does.

📝 Walkthrough

The PyPI settings now support a subprocess keyring provider. Pipx uses keyring-derived credentials for registry version lookup and locking requests. The change adds HTTP support for caller-supplied HTML request headers, end-to-end coverage, and configuration guidance.

Changes: PyPI Keyring Authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure keyring credential lookup
schema/mise.json, settings.toml, src/backend/pipx/keyring.rs
Adds pypi.keyring_provider with disabled and subprocess options. In subprocess mode, the keyring module looks up a password for a username-only registry URL, builds a sensitive Basic authorization header when a password is returned, and decodes percent-encoded usernames. Unit tests cover header construction and username decoding.
Send authenticated index requests
crates/mise-util/src/http.rs, src/backend/pipx.rs, src/backend/pipx/lock.rs, e2e/backend/test_pipx_keyring_provider, docs/dev-tools/backends/pypi.md
Adds get_html_with_headers and routes pipx JSON and Simple-index requests through keyring-generated URLs and headers. The uv lock command forwards the subprocess provider setting when configured. End-to-end tests cover successful authentication and missing credentials. The PyPI guide adds setup instructions and a configuration example.

`uv lock` runs with `--no-config`, so a `keyring-provider` in the user's
uv.toml never reached it and locking still failed after the metadata request
authenticated. Set `UV_KEYRING_PROVIDER=subprocess` for uv when
`pypi.keyring_provider` is `subprocess`.

uv stores and asks for keyring entries under the index URL it installs from,
so ask `keyring get` for that URL instead of the package page.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

5b7b5a888ce4 vs eaa250826243 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
