Fixes the confusion in #14711: find_up = true on env._.file silently changed where the search starts. Every other relative path in a config resolves against the config root, but find_up started at the current directory.

Now a relative find_up path starts at the config root and walks up through its parents, which suits a monorepo whose root .env applies to every package:

# mise.toml
[env]
_.file = { path = ".env", find_up = true }

An absolute path starts at its own directory and searches that directory and each parent for the file name. A global config that wants to search from wherever mise runs says so explicitly with cwd:

# ~/.config/mise/config.toml
[env]
_.file = { path = "{{cwd}}/.env", find_up = true }

Compatibility

find_up shipped in v2026.10.12 (and the multi-name path list in v2026.10.14). A global config with a relative find_up entry used to search from the current directory; it now searches from ~, so it stops finding project files. Add {{cwd}}/ in front of the path to keep the old behavior. The env_file setting still discovers dotenv files up from the current directory and is unchanged.

Validation

  • e2e: env/test_env_file_find_up, env/test_env_file_find_up_group, config/test_paranoid_categories, config/test_paranoid_env_file_trust, plus a new env/test_env_file_find_up_hook_env that activates bash, changes directories, and edits a loaded file.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test -p mise-config pass.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes core env file resolution semantics with a documented breaking change for global relative find_up; affects every project using _.file find_up and activated-shell hooks.

Overview
env._.file with find_up = true no longer walks up from the process current directory. Relative paths now behave like other config paths: search starts at the config root and continues through parent directories (better for monorepo root .env from a package mise.toml).

Absolute paths (including {{cwd}}/.env in a global config) start at that path’s directory and search upward for the file name; normalize_dots keeps .. in absolute starts from climbing back into skipped subtrees. Multi-name path lists still group by shared start directory and preserve override order.

Docs, JSON schema, and comments describe the new rules. E2E and paranoid-trust fixtures use {{cwd}}/ where global configs must discover repo dotenv files; a new hook-env test covers directory changes and file edits under mise activate.

Compatibility: global configs that relied on relative find_up from cwd must prefix with {{cwd}}/; the env_file setting is unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • With find_up enabled, relative environment-file paths now search from the config file’s directory through its parents. Absolute paths search from their own directory and continue upward.
    • For grouped paths, files in nearer directories override files in farther directories; within a directory, later paths take precedence.
  • Documentation
    • Updated environment-file search guidance and examples to explain these rules.

`find_up` on `env._.file` started its search at the current directory,
while every other relative path in a config resolves against the config
root. Relative names now walk up from the config root, and an absolute
path walks up from its own directory, so a global config can write
`{{cwd}}/.env` to search from wherever mise runs.

📝 Walkthrough

find_up now searches relative environment-file paths from the config file’s directory and absolute paths from their normalized parent directories. Search grouping and load precedence are covered by end-to-end tests, which also check environment updates after directory changes and file edits.

Assert that the global relative path loads a file from the config root.

This assertion passes if global relative find_up entries stop loading files entirely. Put a distinct .env in $MISE_CONFIG_DIR and assert that this config loads its value. Keep the existing check that it does not load FROM_PROJ. This tests both sides of the changed search-root behavior.

Check the absolute path from outside proj.

At proj/sub, the previous {{cwd}}/.env entry also finds proj/.env. The final assertion therefore passes even if the hook ignores the new absolute-path configuration. After writing that configuration, change to other, run _mise_hook, and assert that FROM_PROJ remains edited. Only the absolute path should find the file from there.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

7009a1186a37 vs 5257d6805bc1 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
