Part of #14689. minimum_release_age keeps any version that has no release date, so every undated ruby, python or rust version silently bypassed the cooldown. This gives those versions real dates, and makes rust@stable honor the cooldown.

With the mise-versions host off (MISE_USE_VERSIONS_HOST=0), ls-remote --json undated counts go from:

tool before after
ruby 640 of 699 261 of 699
python 40 of 1095 0 of 1095
rust 4 of 161 0 of 161

rust: stable now resolves to the newest stable release that is old enough.

$ mise install -n rust@stable --minimum-release-age 30d
mise rust@1.98.1 ⇢ would install # 1.99.1 without the cutoff

nightly-YYYY-MM-DD is dated from its own name. stable, beta and nightly carry no release date of their own, so each takes the date of the build its channel manifest points at right now. Under an explicit cutoff in the past (not the built-in 24h default, and not --minimum-release-age 0s), each channel resolves to what it pointed at then:

$ mise install -n rust@beta --minimum-release-age 30d
mise rust@beta-2026-09-18   ⇢ would install
$ mise install -n rust@nightly --minimum-release-age 30d
mise rust@nightly-2026-09-19   ⇢ would install

beta and nightly take the newest dated build that exists (up to 90 and 30 days back) from a day before the cutoff's day (the current build, pinned by date, when it is already old enough), and error if none does. This needs the network, so offline resolution leaves the channel as written, and so does prefer-offline for beta and nightly in a config file (a command-line request still applies the cutoff). This adds a Backend::channel_for_cutoff hook (default None) used in ToolVersion::resolve, so it touches src/backend/mod.rs and src/toolset/tool_version.rs.

python: 3.13.0, 3.14.5, 3.15.0 and the pypy definitions had no date because git log --diff-filter=A does not count a definition git detects as a rename or copy (3.15.0 is a rename of 3.15.0rc3). --no-renames fixes it.

ruby: MRI versions without a ruby/ruby GitHub release now use ruby-lang.org's release index. jruby uses Maven Central's jruby-dist listing (every release back to 1.7). truffleruby and truffleruby+graalvm use oracle/truffleruby's GitHub releases.

Still undated, because nothing publishes a date for them: rolling -dev definitions, rubinius, mruby, picoruby, ree, and some very old MRI patch levels (1.8.x/1.9.x).

Unit tests cover the ruby-lang index, Maven listing and truffleruby tag parsing, rust channel dating, and python's rename case against a real temporary git repo. cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes version resolution and install targets for Rust channels under release-age cutoffs (network-dependent manifest lookups), which can alter what rust@stable/beta/nightly install compared to before.

Overview
Versions without release dates used to skip minimum_release_age; this PR assigns created_at from more sources and pins moving Rust channels when an explicit past cutoff is set.

Resolution: ToolVersion::resolve calls a new Backend::channel_for_cutoff hook (Rust is the only implementation). With a user cutoff in the past (not the default 24h, not 0s), online, and not fully offline, rolling channel requests can be rewritten before install—prefer-offline skips that for config-sourced requests.

Rust: Listings date stable, beta, and nightly from channel manifests; nightly-YYYY-MM-DD and beta-YYYY-MM-DD are dated from the name. Under a cutoff, stable resolves like latest (newest release old enough); beta / nightly resolve to a dated build (current pin if already old enough, else HEAD probes on archived manifests up to 90/30 days back).

Python: Git definition timestamps use --no-renames so renames (e.g. 3.15.0rc3 → 3.15.0) get the commit date of the new name.

Ruby: MRI dates merge ruby-lang.org releases.yml after GitHub; JRuby from Maven Central; TruffleRuby / truffleruby+graalvm from oracle/truffleruby releases.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds cutoff-based resolution for rolling channels and updates release-date collection. Rust channels can resolve against dated manifests. Ruby metadata gains release-date sources. Python build-definition timestamps account for renamed files.

Changes: Rolling Channel Cutoff Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cutoff hook and version-resolution entry point
src/backend/mod.rs, src/toolset/tool_version.rs
The backend trait adds a default cutoff hook. Version resolution calls it for an explicit past cutoff when offline modes are disabled.
Rust channel dates and cutoff selection
src/plugins/core/rust.rs
The Rust backend records channel dates, recognizes dated beta versions, and resolves beta and nightly channels against dated manifests. Stable maps to latest for cutoff resolution. Tests cover channel dates, parsing, and manifest URLs.

Ruby Release-Date Sources

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ruby metadata sources and parsers
src/plugins/core/ruby.rs
Ruby release dates now include ruby-lang.org, Maven Central, and Oracle GitHub data alongside GitHub MRI releases. Strict metadata mode returns fetch errors; otherwise, failures are logged and processing continues. Parser tests cover the added formats.

Python Build-Definition Dates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timestamp lookup for renamed definitions
src/plugins/core/python.rs
The Git log query disables rename detection when collecting build-definition timestamps. A regression test checks the timestamp assigned after a definition file is renamed.

🟡 Minor · Exclude the cutoff day from date-only Rust channel selection. · rust.rs:793-815

src/plugins/core/rust.rs:793-815
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude the cutoff day from date-only Rust channel selection.

channel_created_at represents every manifest date at 00:00:00Z. Therefore, an intra-day before cutoff makes the current-build check pass for a build released later on that same UTC day. The fallback loop also searches the cutoff day. Exclude that day in both branches so beta and nightly cannot select a newer build.

Suggested fix
         // The build the cutoff allows is the newest dated one on or before the cutoff's day.
         let config_env = config.env().await?;

             .await
             .and_then(|ts| ts.parse::<jiff::Timestamp>().ok());
         // Already old enough: pin to that build so a lockfile or an upgrade cannot move it.

The 24h `minimum_release_age` default only applied to backends that
report release dates (aqua, cargo, core, forgejo, gem, github, gitlab,
go, npm, packslip, pypi, spm, ubi). Tools from asdf, vfox, conda,
dotnet, http and s3 got no cutoff at all, even when they could be dated.

Now the default applies to every backend:

```toml
# mise.toml: no minimum_release_age configured
[tools]
"conda:ffmpeg" = "latest"   # was: newest version immediately; now: held back 24h
```

A backend can only hold back versions it knows a date for. When `mise
install`, `mise upgrade` or `mise use` is about to install a version
that has none (see the stacked #14694), mise warns once and names the
escape hatch:

```
WARN  asdf:tiny@3.1.0 has no release date, so the ... cutoff cannot be checked and it is allowed (exclude it with minimum_release_age_excludes to silence this)
```

So a tool is either held back or flagged, never silently unprotected.
Exclude a tool or backend with `minimum_release_age_excludes`, or turn
the delay off with `minimum_release_age = "0s"`.

**Stacked on #14694.** Merge after it, and ideally after the backends
that gain dates (#14691, #14692, #14693, #14695, #14696, #14697).

Behavior to know about: a brand-new tool whose only version is under 24h
old now resolves to "no versions found", as it already does on aqua and
github.

**all backends**, not only aqua/cargo/core/github/npm-style backends.
Backends like `asdf:`, `vfox:`, `conda:`, `http:`, and `dotnet:` now get
the same default cutoff when resolving prefixes/`latest` (still subject
to `minimum_release_age_excludes` and `minimum_release_age = "0s"`).
>
> Implementation drops the backend-type whitelist in `install_before.rs`
and applies `DEFAULT_MINIMUM_RELEASE_AGE` whenever a tool has a backend

filtered**, but installs now **warn once** that the cutoff could not be
checked, with a pointer to **`minimum_release_age_excludes`** to silence
the message. Docs and `settings.toml` describe the universal default and
the warning behavior.

cutoff via a shared `without_default_release_age()` helper; coverage now
asserts defaults for previously unsupported backends.
