The key explorer on the mise.toml reference showed a static, regex-highlighted snippet built from the key's type alone, so tools.<tool> read node = "…", version = "…", depends = "…". Now every key that is not deprecated shows a real, valid example:

  • Whole examples (216 keys, plus the tools, env and vars keys under a task or task template, task template keys, deps providers and backend platform tables, derived from them) are realistic mise.toml excerpts: tools.<tool> is [tools] with go and python, then [tools.node] with version and postinstall, and [tools.terraform] with os. Tools and every backend, tasks, task_config, env, vars, hooks, deps, oci, daemons, doctor, dotfiles, and bootstrap scenarios (packages, files, services, compose, remote hosts, macOS Dock/Finder/defaults/launchd, firewall, systemd units, users) are covered.
  • Real values for the rest (536 keys): a key without a whole example is shown in its place in a mise.toml with a real value, such as checksum = "sha256:3b7a…" under [tools."github:owner/tool"], instead of "…". Placeholder names such as <key> become names that fit the section ([bootstrap.packages."brew:ripgrep"], [doctor.checks.database]).
  • Interactive. The snippet is a compact, read-only MiseTomlEditor: schema hover, line numbers, copy, and an "edit in the playground" button. Without scripts it stays plain text.
  • Per-key guide links. tasks.<name>.depends links to the depends heading, tools.<github:…> to the github backend page, env._.file to its section, and so on, falling back to the nearest key above and then the section's guide.
  • Markdown copy. Each section file under configuration/reference/ gets an ## Examples section with the whole examples.

Tests (also added to docs:build): each of the 1,056 non-deprecated keys must produce a snippet that parses as TOML, has no problems against schema/mise.json and contains no placeholder value; every example and value must name a key the reference lists; and every guide link must lead to an existing page and heading. A renamed option or heading, or a new key without an example or value, fails the build.

Checked with a production build and headless Chromium in light and dark mode for tools.<tool>, tasks.<name>, env, tasks.<name>.depends, tools.<github:…>.checksum and bootstrap.macos.dock; no console errors. The VitePress dev server crashes in my sandbox, so I did not use it.

Overview
The mise.toml key explorer no longer shows type-derived snippets with custom regex highlighting. Each key now gets a valid, realistic example: hand-written excerpts in config-reference-examples.ts, or generated snippets filled with concrete values from config-reference-values.ts instead of "…" placeholders.

Snippets render in a compact, read-only MiseTomlEditor (schema hover, copy, playground). Guide links resolve per key path via new guideFor() logic (nearest key-specific guide, then section), not only the top-level section.

Generated reference markdown under configuration/reference/ gains an ## Examples section for keys that have whole examples. docs:build runs new tests that every example/snippet parses, matches schema/mise.json, references known keys, and that guide URLs point at real headings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Configuration reference pages include representative TOML examples for supported settings, with examples also available in generated per-key documentation.
    • Configuration snippets appear in a compact, read-only editor and link to more relevant guides.
    • Snippets use clearer, context-appropriate sample values and show alternative configuration formats as commented options rather than active settings.
  • Tests
    • Documentation builds validate that examples parse correctly, use known configuration keys, and link to existing guides.

📝 Walkthrough

The configuration reference adds path-keyed TOML examples and representative values, resolves documentation guides by configuration path, and includes available examples in generated key pages. The key detail view displays TOML snippets in a compact, read-only editor.

Changes: Configuration Reference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Examples and TOML snippets
docs/components/config-reference-examples.ts, docs/components/config-reference-values.ts, docs/components/config-reference-toml.ts, docs/components/config-reference-examples.test.ts
Adds hand-written TOML examples and representative values by configuration path. Lookup derives examples and values for selected related paths. Snippet generation uses these examples and values, then falls back to generated TOML. Tests check example paths, TOML parsing, schema analysis, and generated snippets.
Key-specific guide lookup
docs/components/config-reference-sections.ts, docs/components/config-reference-sections.test.ts
Adds key-specific and rule-based guide lookup, with fallback to section guides. Tests check guide links and selected lookup results.
Render examples and guides
docs/config-reference.data.ts, docs/components/config-key-detail.vue, docs/components/config-reference.vue, package.json
Generated key pages include examples for the key and its descendants when available. The key detail view uses path-based guide lookup and displays snippets in a compact, read-only editor. The docs build runs the example and guide tests.
