The mise.toml hover from #14673 only worked on the playground, so examples like the ones on dotfiles/groups were plain code blocks. Now hovering a key or value in any mise.toml example says what it is and links to the reference.

This applies to every toml and mise-toml fence that shows a mise config (about 800 blocks): no title, a label such as [Table], or a title naming a mise config file such as [mise.toml] or [~/.config/mise/config.toml]. It uses the same rules as the schema conformance test, so these stay plain code blocks:

  • titles that are not mise configs (mise.lock, fnox.toml, bin/tool, ...)
  • blocks with a <!-- schema: skip --> or <!-- schema: invalid --> line above them
  • blocks fenced as ```toml plain

Details:

  • The examples are read-only and show no problem markers or completions; ```toml editor still gives an editable one. The file title stays above the block, and code groups keep switching tabs.
  • Each example has two icon buttons in its corner, shown on hover (always on touch screens): one opens the example in the playground, where it can be edited and shared, and one copies it.
  • Pages have hundreds of examples, so each editor loads only when it scrolls near the screen; until then (or without scripts) the config shows as plain text.
  • Trade-off: the editor does not highlight the bash and KDL embedded in run and usage fields the way the site's regular mise-toml highlighting does.

The playground page now puts the editor first, with a shorter explanation below it.

Verified with a full vitepress build and headless Chromium: hovering [dotfile_groups] on groups.html and [hooks] on hooks.html shows the card. I did not click through every page.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Recognized TOML and mise-toml configuration examples now appear as compact, read-only editors by default. Use editor for an editable editor or readonly to keep an editor read-only.
    • Editors can display a title. Compact editors include controls to copy the configuration or open it in the playground, and load when near the viewport.
    • Use plain or schema markers to keep implicit editor candidates as code blocks. Titles that don’t identify a configuration also remain code blocks unless marked editor.
  • Documentation
    • Playground guidance now covers hover help, completions, inline error marking, and sharing with Copy link. It notes that shared links include the configuration and advises leaving out secrets.

Note

Low Risk
Docs-site and client-side rendering only; main risk is page weight and users sharing sensitive config via playground links, which the updated copy now warns about.

Overview
Extends the docs so most toml / mise-toml fences that represent mise configs render as schema-aware read-only MiseTomlEditor blocks (hover + reference links), not only fences marked editor. Detection follows the same rules as the schema conformance test (pathIsConfig, plain, <!-- schema: skip|invalid -->, and non-config file titles stay normal code blocks).

Compact editors defer CodeMirror until near the viewport, show an optional fence title, and add corner actions to copy or open in the playground; full editable toolbars still require editor (with optional share / readonly). The CodeMirror setup now omits lint, completions, and edit history when read-only. The playground page leads with the editor and adds a short note that shared Copy link URLs expose config to anyone with the link and the docs host.

📝 Walkthrough

TOML fences can now render schema-aware editors based on fence options and config paths. Implicitly selected editors are compact and read-only. The Vue component adds titles, deferred loading, copy controls, and a playground link. Playground documentation now describes editor interactions and config sharing.

Changes: TOML editor rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fence selection and editor options
docs/.vitepress/config.ts
The renderer recognizes toml and mise-toml fences, identifies eligible config paths, and selects code or editor output based on fence options.
Read-only and editable extensions
docs/.vitepress/mise-toml/editor.ts
Read-only editors omit history, bracket closing, editing keybindings, linting, and completions. Editable editors retain editing extensions. Change notifications remain active in both modes.
Compact editor display and loading
docs/components/mise-toml-editor.vue, docs/configuration/playground.md, docs/public/llms.txt
The component supports compact mode and titles. Compact editors wait for visibility before initialization when IntersectionObserver is available. Compact controls copy the config or open the playground. The documentation describes hover help, completions, inline mistake marking, and config sharing.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

6621af0b361c vs dde8638fefd8 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
