metrics: register component collectors during server startup - #6663
Central metric definitions and import-time registration couple runtime components. Kafka cannot reuse the common keyspace-label helper without creating an import cycle.
What is changed and how it works?
Move collectors into their owning component packages, keep collectors private when they have a single owner, and expose RegisterMetrics entry points.
Register collectors explicitly during server startup. Keep build metadata recording in server.RecordBuildInfo, called from the startup command.
Reuse the common keyspace-label helper for Kafka metrics. Shared sink, dynamic-stream and redo collectors retain a single definition and registration owner.
Consolidate sink implementation and downstream-system classification in config.ParseSinkURI. Update Grafana descriptions to match the scheme-derived MySQL label.
Check List
Tests
Manual test (static validation):
make fmt for changed Go files, using the existing formatting tools in an isolated checkout.
gofmt -l for all 138 changed Go files.
git diff --check master..HEAD.
Traced startup registration: the same 269 collectors remain registered, with no omissions or duplicate registrations.
Checked collector definitions, sampling and cleanup references, package declarations, and the local import graph.
Compared the split branch's complete file tree with the original branch combined with current master.
Builds, unit tests and integration tests have not been run locally for this refactor.
Questions
Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?
Collector names, bucket layouts and sampling/cleanup behavior are preserved. The following externally visible changes are intentional:
MySQL URI downstream-type labels change from mysql/tidb to mysql. Confirmed TiDB downstreams continue to be shown as tidb. Custom queries matching the old combined value need updating.
Unparseable sink URIs produce a sanitized panic from the shared parser.
No performance benchmarks were run.
Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?
The Classic Grafana dashboard and both generated NextGen dashboards have updated downstream-type descriptions. Their queries and layouts are unchanged.
Release note
Report MySQL sink URI downstream types as `mysql`; confirmed TiDB downstreams continue to use `tidb`.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Monitoring
Prometheus metrics are registered by their respective components and included in the server registry, covering server, changefeed, event-service, event-store, log-puller, sink, and scheduler metrics.
Build information is available as a server metric. Event-output counts are reported through event-service metrics rather than event-store metrics.
Refactor
Metric ownership and registration have been reorganized across components. Existing metric labels and observations are generally unchanged.
Keep metric definitions in their owning packages and expose a
RegisterMetrics entry point from each package. Register collectors
explicitly during server startup and retain shared label helpers in
pkg/metrics.
Validation: formatting and static reference checks. Build and unit tests
not run.

Walkthrough
The pull request relocates metric definitions and registration into subsystem packages, updates call sites and tests to use those packages, and adds server-side registration wiring. It also adds a shared keyspace ID formatter and moves build-info recording into the server package.
Changes: Metric ownership and registration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared helpers and dynamic-stream metrics pkg/metrics/labels.go, utils/dynstream/*, downstreamadapter/eventcollector/event_collector.go
The shared package adds FormatKeyspaceID and removes central metric registration. Dynamic-stream metrics move into dynstream, which adds RegisterMetrics; related call sites use those metrics.
Coordinator and maintainer metrics coordinator/*, coordinator/changefeed/*, maintainer/*, pkg/metrics/scheduler.go
Changefeed metrics move into changefeed, and the coordinator defines the error-info gauge. Maintainer defines and registers scheduler metrics directly. Call sites and tests use package-owned metrics.
Event-service metrics pkg/eventservice/*
Event-service metrics become package-local, with a registration function and an event-store output counter. Event-service call sites and tests use package-local metrics.
Event-store and log-puller metrics move into their respective packages. Call sites and tests use package-local metrics, and both packages add registration functions.
Sink and redo metrics downstreamadapter/*, pkg/redo/*, pkg/sink/codec/metrics.go, pkg/metrics/redo.go
Sink and redo metric definitions and registration move into their owning packages. Sink code uses the updated metric packages and shared keyspace-label helpers.
Server registry and build information cmd/cdc/server/server.go, server/*, pkg/metrics/server.go
The server adds registry wiring and registers build information in server. Startup calls RecordBuildInfo; the shared server metrics package continues to register process and Go runtime collectors but no longer registers build information.

Assert that the malformed-URI panic log omits credentials.
64-68: Trivial · Security & Privacy · Quick win
Assert that the malformed-URI panic log omits credentials.
ParseSinkURI masks the URI and the parse error before it calls log.Panic. The expectedPanic cases only check that a panic occurs, and neither input contains credentials. A change that logged the raw URI or the unmasked error would still pass this test.
Add a separate test that captures the log entries and asserts that the secret does not appear. Keep it as a top-level test without t.Parallel, because it replaces the global logger. The NotEmpty check keeps the test from passing when no entry reaches the observer.
Add the fmt, go.uber.org/zap/zaptest/observer, and go.uber.org/zap/zapcore imports. Add the log and zap imports if the file lacks them, using the same import paths as pkg/config/changefeed_log_test.go.

Assert an event-store metric in TestRegisterMetrics.
Assert an event-store metric in TestRegisterMetrics.
The test gathers only six sink and DDL metric names. Removing eventstore.RegisterMetrics(registry) from registerMetrics leaves the count at seven, so the test still passes. Add an event-store metric name to the gathered set and update the expected count. The event-store subscription gauge is unlabeled, so it is exported without any recorded observation and needs no setup:

Update TestRegisterMetrics to include the unlabeled event-store subscription
gauge in the gathered metric names and increase the expected count accordingly,
so the test verifies that event-store metrics are registered without requiring
an observation.

Assert the build-info labels and value in TestRegisterMetrics.
TestRegisterMetrics checks the ticdc_server_build_info series only by name and count. A change to any of its five label values, or to its value of 1, still produces a count of 10, so the test would pass. The current registration values match the assertion below, so this is a regression-coverage gap rather than a current defect.

Update TestRegisterMetrics to assert the ticdc_server_build_info metric’s value
is 1 and its five label values match the values used during registration; retain
the existing name and count checks.

Assert the ticdc_server_build_info label values in this test.
TestRegisterMetrics checks only the sample count. The count stays at 8 when RecordBuildInfo writes wrong label values, so a regression in release_version, git_hash, utc_build_time, kernel_type, or ticdc_arch would pass the test. Assert that the series for the expected label values exists with value 1.

Update TestRegisterMetrics to assert that the build-info series with the
expected release_version, git_hash, utc_build_time, kernel_type, and ticdc_arch
label values exists with value 1. Keep the existing sample-count assertion and
use the project’s established version and kernel symbols plus the test’s
expected architecture value.
Cover each subsystem's registration in TestRegisterMetrics.
Cover each subsystem's registration in TestRegisterMetrics.
The test checks only the seven listed metric names. Removing a RegisterMetrics call for a subsystem that emits none of those names leaves the asserted count unchanged, so the test still passes. A gathered count cannot show a vector that has no children, because it emits no samples.
Initialize a representative series for each subsystem before gathering. Alternatively, check that each subsystem's collectors are registered. The test then fails when a registration call is removed.

Update TestRegisterMetrics to verify registration for every subsystem, not just
the seven listed metric samples: initialize a representative series for each
subsystem before gathering, or assert that each subsystem’s collectors are
registered. Ensure removing any subsystem’s RegisterMetrics call causes the test
to fail, including when its metrics have no children.
