Analysis / Root cause:

OCPBUGS-84497 reports an extremely slow or unresponsive Console with more than 2,000 firing alerts. The notification drawer and dashboard alert lists render every alert, creating thousands of React components and DOM nodes.

This is an initial, minimal fix intended for backporting to older releases. A broader notification redesign, already discussed in CCSIG Console, is planned for 5.1 and will be tracked separately as an RFE.

Solution description:

  • Render at most 50 alert entries in each notification drawer group, and in the cluster and namespaced dashboard alert lists.
  • Add a "View all N alerts" entry when a list exceeds 50, linking to the monitoring alerts page. The drawer entry also closes the drawer.
  • Keep the complete alert data and counts available to existing consumers.
  • Add drawer tests for counts below and above the cap, and English translations for the overflow text.

Test setup:

Log in to a dedicated test cluster with oc, then build and run the PR checkout:

./build-backend.sh
yarn --cwd frontend dev-once
source ./contrib/oc-environment.sh
./bin/bridge --listen=http://127.0.0.1:9000

Open http://localhost:9000. Leave both caps at 50. To test the overflow link destination locally, enable the monitoring dynamic plugin using the repository README's "Enabling Monitoring Locally" instructions.

For the high-volume check, use Jira's reproducer or the following adaptation for a smaller cluster. This creates one alert rule with eight uniquely labeled copies of the existing container metrics; it does not create workloads.

python3 - <<'PYTHON' | oc create -f -
import json

namespace = 'console-alert-loadtest'
copies = 8
expression = ' or '.join(
    f'label_replace(container_start_time_seconds > 0, "reproducer_copy", "{i}", "pod", ".*")'
    for i in range(copies)
)
print(json.dumps({'apiVersion': 'v1', 'kind': 'List', 'items': [
    {'apiVersion': 'v1', 'kind': 'Namespace', 'metadata': {
        'name': namespace,
        'labels': {'openshift.io/cluster-monitoring': 'true'},
    }},
    {'apiVersion': 'monitoring.coreos.com/v1', 'kind': 'PrometheusRule',
     'metadata': {
         'name': 'massive-alert-reproducer', 'namespace': namespace,
         'labels': {'prometheus': 'k8s', 'role': 'alert-rules'},
     },
     'spec': {'groups': [{'name': 'heavy-load-group', 'rules': [{
         'alert': 'StressTestAlert', 'expr': expression, 'for': '0s',
         'labels': {'severity': 'critical', 'reproducer': 'true'},
         'annotations': {'summary': 'High volume alert: {{ $labels.pod }}'},
     }]}]}},
]}))
PYTHON

Wait for rule evaluation and confirm more than 2,000 firing alerts. The count depends on the cluster's existing container metrics.

Open the Overview dashboard and notification drawer, then close and reopen the drawer repeatedly for at least a minute. Load the Nodes page and repeat. After testing, remove the fixture and wait for the synthetic alerts to clear:

oc delete namespace console-alert-loadtest

Test cases:

Completed:

  • Drawer unit tests: all five alerts rendered below the cap; 50 entries and "View all 200 alerts" rendered above it. Both tests pass.
  • Translation generation passes. Targeted lint has zero errors and one existing react-hooks/set-state-in-effect warning also present on unchanged upstream main.
  • Frontend development build (yarn dev-once) passes.
  • Live high-volume check with 2,312 firing critical alert instances: the drawer consistently rendered 50 alerts plus its overflow entry; the cluster dashboard rendered 50 alerts. Overflow text showed the full counts: 2,312 critical and 2,313 total alerts.
  • Six drawer close/reopen cycles over 74 seconds, followed by a Nodes page load, completed without uncaught page exceptions or notification-alert load errors.
  • Test namespace removed and no firing test alerts remaining.

Browser conformance:

Manually checked by the author in Chrome and Firefox.
( The automated high-volume check used headless Chromium 147.0.7727.15 at 1440x1000 ).

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari (or Epiphany on Linux)

Additional info:

The high-volume check on September 25 used the fix on main 5f672bde6b against OpenShift 4.20.38 on two nodes. One rule expanded 289 container-metric series into eight labeled copies, producing 2,312 simultaneously firing critical alerts. This adapts Jira's expression to reach the alert-volume target without its 450-pod workload.

Drawer actions took 111-293 ms and the Nodes page loaded in 2.26 seconds in that run. These are single-run local observations, including automation overhead, rather than a before/after performance benchmark. Performance traces were captured without screenshots.

This PR targets main. Release backports need separate validation.

Walkthrough

The notification drawer and dashboard alert lists display up to 50 alerts per group or list. When a count exceeds 50, each view provides a link to the full alerts page with the total count.

Changes

Alert display limits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Notification drawer limit and navigation
frontend/public/components/notification-drawer.tsx, frontend/public/components/__tests__/notification-drawer.spec.tsx
The drawer shows up to 50 critical and non-critical alerts per group. When a group exceeds 50, it adds a link that selects all namespaces and opens /monitoring/alerts. Tests check groups of 5, 50, and 200 alerts, plus overflow navigation.
Dashboard alert limits and overflow links
frontend/public/components/dashboard/dashboards-page/cluster-dashboard/status-card.tsx, frontend/public/locales/en/public.json
Both dashboard alert lists show up to 50 alerts. When a list exceeds 50, it adds a footer link with the total count. The cluster-wide link selects all namespaces; the namespaced link preserves the selected namespace. English translations provide singular and plural labels.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Set all namespaces from the cluster overflow link.

When a namespace is already selected, this link keeps that selection while its count comes from all cluster alerts. The destination can therefore show fewer alerts than the count in the link. Set ALL_NAMESPACES_KEY before navigation. Keep the project-dashboard link namespace-scoped.

Exercise the non-critical alert path.

makeAlerts defaults to critical, so both fixtures exercise criticalAlerts. A regression in the non-critical 50-item slice or overflow count would pass these tests. Use a non-critical severity for the 200-alert fixture while keeping the 5-alert critical fixture.

Wait for rule evaluation and confirm more than 2,000 firing alerts. The count depends on the cluster's existing container metrics.

Drawer actions took 111-293 ms and the Nodes page loaded in 2.26 seconds in that run. These are single-run local observations, including automation overhead, rather than a before/after performance benchmark. Performance traces were captured without screenshots.

This PR targets main. Release backports need separate validation.

Jira Issue OCPBUGS-84497 has been moved to the MODIFIED state and will move to the VERIFIED state when the change is available in an accepted nightly payload. 🕓

Details

In response to this:

This creates one alert rule with eight uniquely labeled copies of the existing container metrics; it does not create workloads.

python3 - <<'PYTHON' | oc create -f -
import json

namespace = 'console-alert-loadtest'
copies = 8
expression = ' or '.join(
   f'label_replace(container_start_time_seconds > 0, "reproducer_copy", "{i}", "pod", ".*")'
   for i in range(copies)
)
print(json.dumps({'apiVersion': 'v1', 'kind': 'List', 'items': [
   {'apiVersion': 'v1', 'kind': 'Namespace', 'metadata': {
       'name': namespace,
       'labels': {'openshift.io/cluster-monitoring': 'true'},
   }},
   {'apiVersion': 'monitoring.coreos.com/v1', 'kind': 'PrometheusRule',
    'metadata': {
        'name': 'massive-alert-reproducer', 'namespace': namespace,
        'labels': {'prometheus': 'k8s', 'role': 'alert-rules'},
    },
    'spec': {'groups': [{'name': 'heavy-load-group', 'rules': [{
        'alert': 'StressTestAlert', 'expr': expression, 'for': '0s',
        'labels': {'severity': 'critical', 'reproducer': 'true'},
        'annotations': {'summary': 'High volume alert: {{ $labels.pod }}'},
    }]}]}},
]}))
