🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDo not infer platform support from top-level options.
OptionSpec::unknown_keysadds every top-level known option toplatform_knownwhen no platform schema is declared. This acceptsplatforms.linux-x64.binfor Spinel. The generic tool schema permits this nested form, but Spinel readsbinonly from the top level. The install therefore uses the repository-name fallback and ignores the configured executable name.Use an empty platform-key set when
platform_defsis absent. Backends that support platform overrides must declare their platform schema keys.Suggested fix

Compare
Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

…#14639) <!-- entire-trail-link-start --> https://entire.io/gh/jdx/mise/trails/855 <!-- entire-trail-link-end --> The warning for an unknown `mise.toml` key now says where the key is and, when a known key is close, suggests it. Before, it gave only the file and the key path. The path also included serde's internal `?` segments, as in `monorepo.?.config_root`. ```toml [tool] node = "22" [settings] experimantal = true ``` Before: ``` mise WARN unknown field in ~/app/mise.toml: tool mise WARN unknown field in ~/app/mise.toml: settings.experimantal ``` After: ``` mise WARN unknown field in ~/app/mise.toml:1:2: tool (did you mean tools?) mise WARN unknown field in ~/app/mise.toml:5:1: settings.experimantal (did you mean experimental?) ``` A key gets a suggestion when a known key at the same level is at most two edits away; a swap of two neighboring letters counts as one. The warning stays on one line, because it prints on every mise command, including the shell hook. ## Implementation - **Location:** `src/config/config_file/unknown_key.rs` rebuilds the key path from `serde_ignored::Path` segment by segment, so a key containing a dot stays one segment. It then finds the key's position with `toml_edit`'s spans. - **Suggestions:** the known keys come from `schema/mise.json`. It is now embedded once in the library as `crate::config::schema`, with the `$ref`, combinator, `patternProperties` and `items` walk that `mise config get`/`set` completion already used. `config get`/`set` completion, the backend option check from #14629 and this warning share that one copy, in place of three separate `include_str!`s. - The edit-distance match moves from `secrets::grant` into `crate::fuzzy::nearest`, which secrets suggestions still use. ## Validation - New unit tests in `unknown_key.rs` cover top-level keys, nested tables, inline tables, dotted keys, and a key with no near match. - New e2e test `config/test_config_unknown_key`. - `schema_matches_parser`, plus the `cli::config::keys` and `secrets::` unit tests. Stacked on #14638. *AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.299.* 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- CURSOR_SUMMARY --> --- > [!NOTE] > **Low Risk** > Improves config load warnings and refactors schema lookup; behavior for valid configs is unchanged aside from richer stderr output. > > **Overview** > Unknown `mise.toml` keys now warn with **file:line:column**, a cleaner dotted path (no serde `?` segments), and an optional **“did you mean …?”** when a schema-known sibling key is within two transposition-aware edits. > > Parsing gains `unknown_key` (TOML spans via `toml_edit`, suggestions from `schema::known_keys`) and a shared **`config::schema`** module so `mise.json` is embedded once for config completion, backend option checks, and these warnings. `parse_body` / remote fragments take an optional **source path** so includes can attribute warnings to the cached fragment file; pre-cache validation still skips noisy unknown-key warnings. > > **`fuzzy::nearest`** centralizes the old edit-distance helper (still used by secrets name suggestions). ) ## Problem Every `jdx/mise-action` step now fails in `mise install` ([example](https://github.com/gmeligio/flutter-docker-image/actions/runs/39187048757/job/117903200590#step:5:1)): ``` github:GoogleContainerTools/container-structure-test: option `exe` is not used by the github backend ``` `mise-action` has no pinned `version:`, so it installs the latest mise. Starting with [v2026.10.14](https://github.com/jdx/mise/releases/tag/v2026.10.14), installs fail on tool options the backend doesn't read ([jdx/mise#14629](jdx/mise#14629), [jdx/mise#14655](jdx/mise#14655)). The `github` backend has no `exe` option ([docs](https://github.com/jdx/mise/blob/main/docs/dev-tools/backends/github.md)). Older versions ignored it silently. ## Change - Remove `[exe=container-structure-test-linux-amd64]` from the `container-structure-test` tool in `mise.toml`. The option isn't needed. mise strips the OS/arch suffix from single-binary assets, so the binary still installs as `container-structure-test`. `mise.lock` already pins the asset for each platform and doesn't change. ## Validation With mise 2026.10.14, `mise install` exits 0 and `mise which container-structure-test` resolves to `.../container-structure-test/1.22.1/container-structure-test`, which runs and reports `1.22.1`. --- _Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code/session_01NroSNTxPtajdjoaJuirPBf)_ Co-authored-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The github backend never read the binary option; mise silently ignored it through v2026.10.13, and v2026.10.14 turned unknown tool options into a hard install failure (jdx/mise#14629). Drop the option so the mise bump (#616) does not break the toolbox image build. Signed-off-by: ps-jshriner <joseph.shriner@polarsquad.com>

https://entire.io/gh/jdx/mise/trails/848
A tool option that a backend does not read used to be accepted without any signal, so an install looked like it had applied a setting it ignored (the cause of #14623, where
rename_exewas silently dropped by the cargo backend). Now the install fails and names the option:Each backend opts in on its own, by declaring which
schema/mise.jsondefinitions document its options (Backend::option_spec). A backend with no declaration is not checked. Keys underplatformsare checked too. Declared so far: cargo, conda, gem, github/gitlab/forgejo, go, http, npm, packslip, pipx, s3, spinel, spm and ubi.Not declared: aqua, because its
varsaccept arbitrary keys, so there is no fixed set to check against (an e2e test caught this); and the plugin and core-language backends. This is an error, so a config that carries a typo or a key meant for a different backend will now stop installing until it is fixed. The key lists come from the schema, which
schema_matches_parseralready keeps in line with every config in the docs and e2e tests, and a unit test checks that every option the schema documents for a backend is accepted by it.Stacked on #14626 (the cargo
rename_exefix); review that first.Tested with unit tests and the backend e2e tests that exercise options (github, forgejo, gem, conda, aqua).

Note
Medium Risk
This is a behavior change: valid-looking configs with typos or backend-specific keys that were previously ignored will now block installs until fixed.
Overview
Installs now fail fast when
mise.tomllists a tool option that the chosen backend does not support, instead of ignoring it. Backends that opt in declare their allowed keys viaBackend::option_spec(driven byschema/mise.json), including nestedplatformsoverrides and flatplatform_*keys; shared tool keys and tool-stubbinstay allowed.Cargo, conda, gem, GitHub/GitLab/Forgejo, go, http, npm, packslip, pipx, s3, spinel, spm, and ubi implement this; backends without a fixed option set (e.g. aqua) are unchanged. The HTTP platform schema now documents
headersandheaders_forwardfor per-platform overrides.E2e coverage asserts cargo rejects options like
asset_pattern; tool-stub CLI tests usechecksum = "blake3:…"instead of a bareblake3field.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 0f348bf. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
