env_file (the setting) and env._.file with find_up = true both find a .env in the current directory and its parents, and the docs described them as doing "the same" thing. They don't behave the same: env_file is applied after every config file's [env], so its values win, while an _.file entry is an ordinary [env] entry that a project's own [env] values override. Someone moving a global env_file = ".env" to _.file = [{ path = ".env", find_up = true }] can silently change which value a command receives (see discussion #14600).

These are separate features, so this clarifies the docs instead of changing behavior:

  • the env._.file page now says env_file is a different feature and states the precedence difference
  • the env_file setting description says its values override [env] and that _.file entries do not

No code changes.

Overview
Documentation only — clarifies that env_file / MISE_ENV_FILE and [env] _.file with find_up are separate mechanisms, not interchangeable ways to walk parent directories for .env.

The environments guide now states that _.file participates in normal [env] precedence (project config can override a global find_up entry), while env_file is applied after all config [env] blocks and therefore usually wins, except it skips any dotenv file already loaded via _.file. The env_file setting docs in settings.toml mirror that precedence and cross-link to the _.file section.

No runtime or config behavior changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how find_up searches for files and how its behavior differs from env_file.
    • Documented precedence between dotenv files and [env] entries, including how project settings can override global configuration.

📝 Walkthrough

The documentation clarifies how find_up and env_file locate files and how their values interact with config [env] entries.

Changes: Environment documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document environment file precedence
docs/environments/index.md, settings.toml
The documentation states that find_up loads matching files from the filesystem root toward the current directory, with closer files taking precedence, and does not apply to absolute paths. It distinguishes this behavior from env_file, which searches the current directory and its parents. It also states that env_file values override config [env] values, while project [env] entries can override _.file entries.

The documentation may lead users to expect env_file to override a project value when both features load the same file. Clarify this exception before merging; the issue is limited to the affected configuration and documentation.

documentation and its matching text in `settings.toml` to clarify that values
win over project `[env]` values unless `env._.file` has already loaded the same
path; in that case, `env_file` skips it and the project value may remain in
