mise upgrade (and anything else that touches the npm backend) aborted with a core dump when the system TLS root store could not be loaded:

$ mise upgrade
The application panicked (crashed).
Message:  failed to build HTTP client: reqwest::Error { kind: Builder, source: InvalidCertificate(BadEncoding) }
Location: aube-registry-2.7.0/src/client/http.rs:335
Aborted (core dumped)

The panic is an .expect() inside the embedded aube-registry crate, and release builds use panic = "abort", so mise cannot catch it. aubepkg/aube#1758 adds RegistryClient::try_from_config, which returns the error. mise now uses it and reports the failure, with the underlying causes:

$ mise upgrade
mise ✗ npm:playwright · failed: Could not initialize the npm registry HTTP client: builder error: ...

The aube crates are bumped to 2.7.2, which includes RegistryClient::try_from_config (aubepkg/aube#1758). Unlike a TLS-root probe, this also covers a malformed certificate from NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS or an .npmrc ca/cafile.

I did not reproduce the original crash on a system with a bad system certificate; the aube PR has unit tests for the error paths.

Fixes #14591

Note

Medium Risk
Changes how npm registry HTTP/TLS setup fails (panic vs reported error), which affects any command using the npm backend but narrows blast radius by failing only those operations.

Overview
npm registry client initialization no longer panics when building the HTTP client fails (e.g. bad system TLS roots, malformed NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, or .npmrc ca/cafile).

The lazy RegistryClient is built with try_from_config from aube 2.7.2 instead of the old path that could .expect inside aube-registry and abort the process under panic = "abort". Failures are stored once in a process-wide lazy Result, surfaced through a small client() helper, and returned as normal mise errors with the full error cause chain on packument fetch, search, and tarball download.

Cargo.lock bumps the aube-* workspace crates to 2.7.2 (including the zip dependency used by registry/runtime).

Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit bf47675. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.

aube-registry builds its HTTP clients with .expect(), so a certificate it
cannot load aborted mise upgrade with a core dump. Probe an equivalent
client first and return the failure as an error.

📝 Walkthrough

The npm registry client now records client initialization failures and returns them through packument fetching, package search, and tarball download.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fallible HTTP client initialization

Client construction uses RegistryClient::try_from_config. The lazy client stores either the initialized client or the initialization error, including source-chain messages.
Registry operation error propagation

Packument fetching, package search, and tarball download use the fallible client accessor. The existing missing-dist error remains unchanged.

This change makes npm registry operations report certificate and HTTP client setup failures as errors instead of crashing. However, it relies on a registry-library function that the currently pinned version does not provide, so the project cannot build. It should not merge until a compatible aube-registry release is available and the dependency is updated.

Explanation

The whole-PR diff changes only src/backend/npm_registry.rs. It changes npm registry client construction and error propagation for the behavior in issue #14591. The existing version-sorting test remains unrelated but unchanged.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #14591 requires mise upgrade to report an actionable error instead of aborting when the aube-registry HTTP client cannot be built. The diff replaces RegistryClient::from_config with try_from_config, caches the error, and routes packument, search, and tarball operations through client(). However, Cargo.lock still resolves aube-registry 2.7.1, and the PR states that this API is not available in that version. The reviewed head therefore does not compile, so the required behavior is not deliverable in this state. No dedicated regression test covers failed client initialization.

Resolution

Update the aube-registry dependency and Cargo.lock to a released version that provides RegistryClient::try_from_config. Build the project and add or run a regression test that verifies client initialization failures return an actionable error without a panic.

Summary

npm registry requests now return an error when the HTTP client cannot be built, rather than aborting mise.

Replaces the TLS-root probe with RegistryClient::try_from_config

certificates. Needs an aube release to compile.

…anicking (#1758)

<!-- entire-trail-link-start -->
https://entire.io/gh/aubepkg/aube/trails/156
<!-- entire-trail-link-end -->

An embedder that builds a `RegistryClient` on a system whose TLS roots
reqwest cannot load aborts the whole process. In mise this took down
`mise upgrade` (jdx/mise#14591):

```text
The application panicked (crashed).
Message:  failed to build HTTP client: reqwest::Error { kind: Builder, source: InvalidCertificate(BadEncoding) }
Location: aube-registry-2.7.0/src/client/http.rs:335
```

`build_http_client` ended in `.expect("failed to build HTTP client")`,
and embedders that ship with `panic = "abort"` cannot catch it.

This adds `RegistryClient::try_from_config` and
`try_from_config_with_policy`, which return the `reqwest::Error`
instead. `from_config` and `from_config_with_policy` keep their
signatures and still panic, so existing callers are unaffected. The
panic-free path is `pub`; the internal builders gain `try_` variants.

mise will switch to `try_from_config` once this is released
(jdx/mise#14595).

## Validation

- New unit test
`try_build_http_client_returns_an_unloadable_root_as_an_error`: a root
certificate with undecodable bytes now yields `Err`.
- `cargo test -p aube-registry` passes; clippy with `-D warnings` is
clean.
