fix(upgrade): leave lazy tools that are not installed to their first run - #14422
Conversation
A bare `mise upgrade` counted a lazy tool with nothing installed as outdated and installed it, so one `mise up` installed every lazy tool a config declares. A bare `mise install` already skips them. Drop those from a bare upgrade and from its out-of-range note. Naming the tool still installs it, as `mise install node` does, and an installed lazy tool upgrades as before.

A lazy tool waits for its first run only while no version of it is installed, so changing an installed tool's request still upgrades it. A missing lazy tool that an upgraded tool depends on is installed with it, as before. A tool the upgrade leaves alone gets no minimum_release_age warning.

Filter missing lazy tools before outdated lookups.
When a bare upgrade includes a missing lazy tool, this line removes the tool only after the outdated check has queried its backend. A slow or failing backend can still delay the upgrade and emit lookup warnings for a tool that the upgrade will leave alone. Apply the lazy-tool exclusion when selecting candidates for the outdated check. Preserve candidates required by tools that will upgrade. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Valid, but it needs a toolset-level change, so it's in a follow-up: #14444. A bare mise upgrade now defers resolution of missing lazy tools and skips their outdated lookup, keeping the ones an upgraded tool depends on.

@jdx, thanks for the clarification. #14444 tracks the toolset-level fix, including dependency retention. This finding remains open for #14422 because the fix is in a separate PR.
Would you like a separate tracking issue, or is #14444 sufficient?

Before 2026.10.11 a bare mise upgrade, which omarchy update and mup run, installs every lazy tool nobody has run yet. jdx/mise#14422 fixed that, and Omarchy's mise-bin is on 2026.10.12.

Upgrade::leave_missing_lazyremoves a lazy request from a bare upgrade when the tool has no installed version.
