Hotkey functions now handle unset, empty, and changing values the way callers expect, in core and all 10 adapters.
Unset options keep their defaults. An option set to undefined behaves as if it were left out. This covers register, adapter bindings, provider defaults, Alpine and Ember createHotkeysScope defaults, and recorder options. Before, a wrapper that forwarded preventDefault: props.preventDefault turned off preventDefault and stopPropagation. eventType: undefined made a hotkey never fire, and scope: undefined moved a hotkey out of its provider's scope. In setOptions, undefined resets the option to its default.
Optional hotkeys. The single-hotkey functions, plural functions, and hint helpers accept undefined and null. Only a hotkey with a key registers. A hotkey that changes to undefined, null, '', or { key: '' } unregisters, and registers again when it gets a value. Before, a nullish hotkey threw in every adapter, and an empty one fired on key-less keydown events such as autofill's. Callback context types still narrow for known hotkeys. HotkeyManager.register still requires a hotkey and throws a clear error.
null targets register nothing in React and Preact, and in core's prepareHotkeyDefinitions fallback. Before, a null target listened on document. To listen on document, leave out target.
Providers apply a changed customHotkeys prop, compared by value, so saved data that loads later or another user's data takes effect without a remount. undefined leaves the current custom hotkeys unchanged and null clears them. AppHotkeysStore.setOptions accepts customHotkeys for Lit, Alpine, and Ember.
New core helpers in @tanstack/hotkeys/adapter: definedOptions merges option layers without letting undefined override, and withDefaults merges recorder options over provider defaults.
Guides get an "Optional hotkeys" section and the customHotkeys rule. The React and Preact skills and the app-hotkeys skill are updated, and reference docs are regenerated.
The behavior changes are a null target in React and Preact, empty hotkeys, and HotkeyManager.register throwing for a missing or empty hotkey. The changesets call each of them out. The Lit @hotkey decorator still requires a hotkey, because it's fixed when the class is defined.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Hotkeys can be optional: unset or empty shortcuts are not registered, their hints are hidden, and they can be registered again when a value is supplied.
Providers can apply saved custom hotkeys after startup. Changed values replace current shortcuts, null clears them, and undefined leaves them unchanged.
A null target skips registration; omitting the target continues to listen on the document.
Bug Fixes
Unset options preserve configured defaults, and invalid or keyless shortcuts do not register.
- Options set to undefined keep their defaults in register, adapter
bindings, provider defaults, scope defaults, and recorder options.
setOptions resets an undefined option to its default.
- A null target registers nothing in React, Preact, and the core adapter
fallback, instead of listening on document.
- Every adapter accepts undefined and null hotkeys. Only a hotkey with a
key registers; empty and nullish hotkeys register nothing, and hints
return false. HotkeyManager.register still requires a hotkey.
- Providers apply a changed customHotkeys prop, compared by value.
undefined leaves custom hotkeys unchanged and null clears them.

Walkthrough
The changes update core hotkey registration and option merging, add optional-hotkey support across framework adapters, and allow providers and stores to apply later saved custom-hotkey data. Tests, guides, skill files, and release notes cover these changes.
Changes: Hotkey Behavior and Provider Updates
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Core registration and store behavior packages/hotkeys/src/{_registration.ts,adapter.ts,app-hotkeys.ts,hint.ts,hotkey-manager.ts,match.ts}, packages/hotkeys/tests/*
Core option merging now ignores undefined overrides or applies defaults. Registration validates nullish and keyless hotkeys. AppHotkeysStore.setOptions applies changed saved custom-hotkey data while preserving local edits when the saved data is unchanged.
Optional hotkeys and option defaults across frameworks packages/*-hotkeys/src/*, packages/*-hotkeys/tests/*
Framework APIs accept nullish optional hotkeys. Tests cover registration removal and restoration, skipped definitions, hint results, unset options, and null targets.
Providers pass changed custom-hotkey values to the store. Framework tests cover late-arriving data, unchanged saved values, local edits, and callback behavior.
Guides, skill files, and release notes .changeset/*, docs/framework/*/guides/*, packages/{hotkeys,preact-hotkeys,react-hotkeys}/skills/*, packages/react-hotkeys/tests/skills/*
Documentation and release notes describe optional hotkeys, option and target behavior, and saved custom-hotkey updates. The React shortcut skill test expectations now reflect null-target behavior.

- Line 14: Update AppHotkeysStore.setOptions so changing saved custom hotkeys
from an empty object to null is not treated as an equal value and clears the
current custom hotkeys. Add a test through the provider that starts with
customHotkeys as {}, adds a user hotkey, then passes null and verifies the
hotkey is cleared.

row, keeping the hotkey value—including the ['G', { key: '', mod: true }]
binding—as a single callback argument.

… null
A null customHotkeys value was compared as equal to {}, so passing null
after empty saved data kept the user's changes instead of clearing them.
Never-passed still equals {}. Also wrap it.each rows in the empty-key test
so the sequence row stays one argument.
