Fixes #3340

Repro on current main (post-#3521)

Reproduced on upstream/main at b643ced1 before coding: the plain class form (with Thing() as t) resolves, but the @contextmanager / @asynccontextmanager, walrus (including comprehension filter), and match ... as targets stay untyped and get no CALLS edge. #3521 (FlowBindings) fixed none of the four forms — it models these bindings as OPAQUE and leaves lone bindings to the flat type map. This PR implements only that remainder: flat-map typing in the traverse pass plus @contextmanager yield typing in _entered_type. FlowBindings is untouched.

What changed

  • with_analyzer.py: _entered_type now unwraps a generator factory's yield type, but ONLY when the factory is decorated with @contextmanager / @asynccontextmanager (qualified, aliased, and stacked forms resolved through the defining module's import map). The yielded type comes from the Iterator[T] / Generator[T, ...] / AsyncIterator[T] / AsyncGenerator[T, ...] annotation (quoted type arguments supported), else from the factory's own yield expressions (single distinct type, with local assignments/walrus bindings typed). Non-decorated factories keep today's behaviour: the target types from the manager's __enter__ return type (plain-factory negative case covered by a test). Bare self./cls. factory methods resolve through the MRO.
  • ast_analyzer.py: the traverse pass now visits named_expression and case_clause nodes. Walrus targets type from the assigned expression in document order with plain assignments (PEP 572 scoping: a walrus in a lambda binds in the lambda, one in a comprehension leaks into the enclosing body). case C(...) as t types t as C, including same-class unions, and never clobbers a later binding of the same name. Walrus expressions reading a with target typed only by the retry loop are retyped.
  • parsers/py/utils.py: _split_top_level moved here as public split_top_level() and shared by both passes (no behaviour change).
  • constants/ast_python.py: constants for class_pattern, the contextlib module, the contextmanager decorator names, and the generator annotation names.

Limits

  • Attribute-receiver factories (self.proxy.release()) are not followed: the receiver type is unknown in _entered_type. Bare self./cls. methods are.
  • Factories nested inside another function are not followed.
  • Subject narrowing (case Thing(): narrowing the subject) is not implemented: the flat map holds one type per name and cannot scope narrowing to a case body.
  • A same-named local definition shadowing an imported contextmanager in the defining module is not detected (import-map resolution only).

Tests

New codebase_rag/tests/test_python_binding_target_types.py (31 tests), written first and confirmed failing on current main for the 12 fix targets before the implementation. Covers: the four issue functions plus async variants, aliased/qualified/stacked decorators, Generator/AsyncGenerator annotations, unannotated yield fallback (literal and local variable), quoted annotations, inherited @contextmanager methods, a non-contextlib decorator named contextmanager (stays untyped), walrus in if/while/short-circuit/comprehension-filter/lambda (non-leak), binding order, the with-retry walrus, and match last-binding. Plain-class control, plain-generator, plain-factory (Inner), mixed yields, different-class unions, bare/wildcard captures, and nested-def non-leak negatives included.

Focused suites run after the fix: new file 31 passed; with-binding + flow-bindings + flow helpers + nested scope + return-type inference + call-resolution fallback + iterative inference + snippet-path 172 passed; ruff check and ruff format --check clean; ty check clean on the changed files.

Disclosure: AI coding assistance was used in preparing this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Python code analysis now infers types assigned through synchronous and asynchronous context managers, including generator-based context managers.
    • Type inference now covers assignment expressions and aliases in match case patterns, improving type and call-connection resolution.
    • Improved handling of nested scopes and later assignments helps avoid incorrect type assignments. Unsupported or conflicting generator yields remain untyped.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Ambiguous patterns and bindings are handled more conservatively to reduce incorrect type inference.

Update (follow-up commits)

Two follow-up commits extend the fix and address review findings:

  • Aliased generator annotations (Iterator as It) resolve through the factory module's import map and count only for typing / typing_extensions / collections.abc; a same-named annotation from another module does not. A bare capture case t: types as the match subject's type (value patterns, _, and captures inside larger patterns are untouched; an untyped subject leaves the capture untyped). Qualified class patterns (case helpers.HThing() as t) are covered.
  • Review fixes: inherited @contextmanager methods resolve decorators/annotations in the owner's defining module (cross-module case covered); the last-binding rule now sees case ... as t aliases via a local census in the type passes only (the shared binding census feeding scope_facts is untouched, preserving native-bridge parity); bare captures try simple expression inference first.

Test file now has 39 tests (all passing), plus 178 neighboring tests and the native scope-parity suite passing. A second Antigravity review of the final diff returned APPROVE.

Explanation

The title "fix(py): type contextmanager, walrus and match binding targets" follows Conventional Commits and names the three binding forms the changeset types: @contextmanager/@asynccontextmanager with-targets, walrus targets, and match-case captures. It matches the main change in the ast_analyzer, with_analyzer, utils, constants, and new test file. It omits the generator-annotation and yield-inference detail, which is acceptable for a short title.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description fills the template's core content: a summary of what changed, limits, and a test plan with counts and check results. It links the issue (Fixes #3340) and states the change is a bug fix. Gaps: the Summary section uses prose rather than the 1-3 bullet points the template asks for (the 'What changed' list roughly covers this), the Demo section is not filled in or replaced with a 'No user-visible change' line, the Type of Change checkboxes are unticked, and the Test Plan checkboxes are unticked even though the text reports the tests run. The Checklist is also unticked. These gaps are non-critical for the check, and the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3340 is an active direct target. The reported changes type @contextmanager and @asynccontextmanager targets from supported generator annotations or consistent yield values. They type walrus targets, including comprehension filters, and case C(...) as t captures. They preserve plain-factory behavior. The reported regression suite covers the required forms and async cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The production changes support Issue #3340. The shared split_top_level() utility and AST constants support the new inference paths. The tests cover required behavior and negative cases. No unrelated change or critical scope violation is demonstrated.

Summary

The PR adds Python type inference for context-manager targets, walrus targets, and match captures.

  • Generator-based context managers give their targets the yielded value's type.
  • Walrus expressions give their target the assigned value's type.
  • Class-pattern aliases and typed bare captures give calls a usable type.

Clear stale types on untypable rebinding.

When a recognized factory assigns a known type to t, then assigns an untypable expression before yield t, the current branch leaves the old type in local_types. _yield_expression_type then uses that stale type, which can create an incorrect target method CALLS edge.

In the recognized factory assignment handling, remove any existing entry from
local_types when a valid identifier is rebound to an expression whose type

the current inferred-type assignment behavior for expressions that can be typed.

Small follow-up pushed: the generator-annotation and contextmanager-decorator spellings are now precomputed constants instead of being rebuilt on every call. No behaviour change; the binding-target tests pass. The workflows still await maintainer approval, so there is no CI result yet.

Outside diff Skip the loop-derived walrus write when the enclosing body rebinds the same name later.

1627-1664: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Skip the loop-derived walrus write when the enclosing body rebinds the same name later.

_type_comprehension_walrus writes local_var_types[name] whenever the walrus value reads a comprehension loop variable. It does not compare source positions. This pass runs after the source-ordered assignment passes, so a later assignment's type is already in the flat map when the write happens. For valid Python such as:

def f():
    ys = [t.go() for x in [Thing()] if (t := x)]
    t = Other()
    return t.go() # resolved as Thing.go, although t is Other here

the deferred write replaces Other with Thing, and the final t.go() resolves to Thing.go.

Correction: pass the enclosing body's last-binding positions into _type_comprehension_walrus. Build them the way _type_match_aliases builds last from _bindings_in(scope). Skip the loop-derived write when last[name] is greater than the walrus target's start_byte. Leave the existing name not in local_var_types branch unchanged. The exact signature change and the contents of _bindings_in were not inspected, so no diff is given.

Severity is minor. The shape is narrow, the result is one wrong call edge, and no crash or data loss follows. The requested tone instructions limit flagged comments to critical, major, or high-severity issues, so this finding should be withheld from posting unless the requester overrides that limit.

Update _type_comprehension_walrus to receive the enclosing body’s last-binding
positions, built using _bindings_in as in _type_match_aliases. Before writing a

464-481: Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Clear stale local types after unresolved rebinding.

_factory_local_types promises that later bindings overwrite earlier ones and that unreadable values remain unknown. However, t = Thing(); t = opaque(); yield t leaves Thing in local_types. The later yield can then be inferred as Thing, so the context-manager target receives an incorrect type and downstream calls may resolve to incorrect methods.

Update the `_factory_local_types` binding logic so every readable local name
overwrites its prior type when rebound. If the new value is missing or cannot be
inferred by the simple or complex inference methods, remove that name from
`local_types` instead of retaining a stale type; preserve the existing inference
behavior for resolvable values.

Both follow-up findings fixed in the latest push, with regression tests:

  • Comprehension walrus: a loop-derived write no longer replaces a later rebinding of the same name, whether a plain assignment or a case ... as alias. The existing name-not-in-map case is unchanged.
  • Factory locals: t = Thing(); t = opaque(); yield t now yields unknown instead of Thing. A bare t: Thing annotation still leaves the earlier type alone, since it declares without rebinding.

Tests: 4 new regression tests; the binding, with-binding, context-manager, factory and flow suites pass (145 tests), ruff and ty clean, and an Antigravity review of the diff approved with no findings. CI still awaits maintainer workflow approval, so no CI result yet.

P1 Captures read later subject types

_type_bare_capture reads the subject's final type, not its type at the match. For example:

s = Thing()
match s:
    case t:
        pass
s = Other()
t.go()

The assignment passes have already changed s to Other when this lookup runs. It therefore types t as Other and can create an incorrect exact CALLS edge to Other.go. Read the subject's bindings at the match, or skip inference when a later binding makes that value unclear.

Fixed in the latest push. A bare capture now stays untyped when the match subject is rebound after the match statement: the flat map already holds the later type by the time this pass runs, so taking it would type the capture with a value it never binds. Covered by test_bare_capture_subject_rebound_after_match_stays_untyped (failed before with an exact edge to Other.go, passes now); the existing bare-capture, parameter-subject, and direct-constructor tests still pass. CI is still running on the new push, no result yet.

P1 Qualified generator annotations get rejected

import collections.abc stores collections -> collections.abc in the import map. For collections.abc.Iterator[Thing], this code appends abc.Iterator to that value and checks collections.abc.abc.Iterator, so it rejects a supported annotation.

An annotated context manager yielding an otherwise unreadable value now loses its target type and exact method edges. Normalize dotted imports before appending the remaining path, as resolve_dotted_class already does.

Fixed in the latest push. _is_generator_annotation now strips path segments the import map already holds before appending the rest, so collections.abc.Iterator[Thing] under import collections.abc resolves to collections.abc.Iterator instead of the doubled collections.abc.abc.Iterator. Covered by test_dotted_collections_abc_iterator_annotation (failed before, target untyped) plus guards for typing.Iterator, collections.abc.AsyncIterator, and the cabc alias spelling, all passing. CI is still running on the new push, no result yet.
