Summary

An entity id belongs to one type for its whole life, because snapshots chain by entity id. A create reusing an existing id for another type fell into the duplicate-prevention skip and vanished; an edit on the wrong type surfaced as a NotSupportedException from inside replay. Both are now a CommitValidationException when the commit is authored on this client, and unchanged when the commit arrives any other way.

 SnapshotWorker.ApplyCommitChanges
   prevSnapshot = GetAsync(entityId)
+ if prevSnapshot exists and replayPolicy.IsStrict(commit)
+    throw CommitValidationException when prevSnapshot's type != change.EntityType
   if prevSnapshot is null -> NewEntity
   else if deleted and can create -> NewEntity (revive)
   else if can apply -> ApplyChange
   else                           -> skip (duplicate create)

Strictness is per commit, not per replay. A replay window resumes from the last checkpoint, so it usually holds older synced commits beside the new one; only the new commits are strict, or an unrelated local edit could fail on a collision that sync introduced earlier.

DataModel.AddChanges / AddManyChanges  -> ReplayPolicy.StrictFor(new commits)
AddRangeFromSync                        -> ReplayPolicy.Lenient
RegenerateSnapshots                     -> ReplayPolicy.Lenient
ModelVersionService reconcile           -> ReplayPolicy.Lenient
query-time SnapshotWorker.ReplayCommits -> ReplayPolicy.Lenient

ReplayPolicy is a record struct whose default is lenient, so existing callers of ComputeNewSnapshotsAndCheckpoints in tests and benchmarks compile unchanged. Deleted snapshots count: a Definition on a deleted Word's id would continue the Word's chain. OpaqueChange carries no entity type and is never checked.

Evidence

  • Before: the ported app test wrote a NewWordChange and a NewDefinitionChange sharing one id in a single commit and got one Word, zero Definitions, and no error.
    After: AuthoringACreateForAnIdThatBelongsToAnotherTypeThrowsAndPersistsNothing throws CommitValidationException naming the id and both types, and leaves zero commits and zero snapshots behind.
  • Four more tests in SnapshotTests: a cross-commit create and edit both throw and leave the Word untouched; a deleted Word's id still throws; a same-type duplicate create is still accepted; a synced cross-type commit is skipped rather than thrown, a later strict local edit replays the window containing it without throwing, and RegenerateSnapshots reaches the same state.
  • Full suite: 458 passed. dotnet format --verify-no-changes clean.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Revert restores the silent skip. No stored data changes shape and no serialized change type changes.

Blast Radius: authors

Apps that reused an entity id across types now get an exception from AddChange, AddChanges or AddManyChanges where they used to lose the change silently or hit a NotSupportedException. Synced histories replay exactly as before. Note: CI builds the merge with main, which does not compile until #164 lands, so checks stay red until then.

Test plan

  • dotnet test src/SIL.Harmony.Tests -- --filter-class '*SnapshotTests' passes (25 tests)
  • Full suite passes once Fix JsonSyncableTests for the SyncService constructor #164 is merged into main
  • An app test that reuses an entity id for another type now fails with CommitValidationException on AddChanges

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

An entity id belongs to one type for its whole life, because snapshots
chain by entity id. A create reusing an existing id for another type used
to fall into the duplicate-prevention skip and vanish silently, while an
edit on the wrong type surfaced as a NotSupportedException from replay.

SnapshotWorker now checks the change's entity type against the previous
snapshot's object type, deleted or not, and throws CommitValidationException
when they differ. A new ReplayPolicy decides which commits are strict:
only the ones AddChanges and AddManyChanges author on this client, where
the transaction rolls back and the caller can fix the bug. Sync,
RegenerateSnapshots, model version reconcile and query-time replay stay
lenient, so a commit already in shared history replays the same way it
always has instead of poisoning every client.

Walkthrough

Snapshot replay now accepts a per-commit replay policy. Authored commits use strict replay, which rejects entity-type mismatches. Sync imports, model version reconciliation, and snapshot regeneration use lenient replay, which skips conflicting changes. Tests cover authored failures, same-type duplicate IDs, and conflicting synced changes.

Nitpick Add a test for AddManyChanges with an entity ID reused across types.

164-168: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a test for AddManyChanges with an entity ID reused across types.

The authored-conflict tests reach the strict replay path only through WriteNextChange, which calls AddChanges. AddManyChanges supplies its own ReplayPolicy.StrictFor(commits) and no test calls it. If that policy became lenient, batch authoring would accept a conflicting ID and the current tests would still pass.

Add a test that calls DataModel.AddManyChanges with a create and a conflicting create or edit that reuse one ID across entity types. Assert that it throws CommitValidationException, and that no commits or snapshots persist. This is a test-coverage improvement. The current code already rejects the conflict.

…es test

Lenient replay revives a deleted id as the new type rather than skipping
the create; the docs now say so, and a synced-create test characterizes it.
A strict commit whose change declares no EntityType is now checked against
the entity it produced, so a custom change cannot slip past the pre-check.
AddManyChanges picks its own replay policy, so it gets its own test.

Strict commits skip a null-EntityType create on a live ID before the type check runs.

For a change with a null EntityType that supports NewEntity but not ApplyChange, replay on a live ID reaches the continue at SnapshotWorker.cs:109. The produced-type check at lines 112-115 runs after that continue, so it does not run for this change. The pre-check at lines 71-74 returns early because the type is null.

A strict commit that creates a different type on a live ID can persist with that create silently skipped. No CommitValidationException is thrown. The comments at lines 127-128 and 132 state that this case is covered, but the code does not reach that check on this path.

Same-type duplicate creates on a live ID are skipped by design, and lenient replay must keep that behavior. The gap is the cross-type case only. The deleted-ID revive path is not affected, because it does not continue and its produced-type check runs.

Assert the revived Tag after RegenerateSnapshots().

Review feedback: a deleted Word's id must not come back as a Tag. Later
changes that reference the Word would find a Tag, and history would have
one id pointing at two types. Lenient replay now ignores any change whose
type does not match the id's existing snapshot, deleted or live, which
also replaces the NotSupportedException an edit on the wrong type used to
throw from inside sync. Strict commits still throw.

Check the produced type against EntityType on the create path.

A create with no previous snapshot skips the produced-type check. A custom IChange can declare Definition and return a Word. That Word is persisted for the id. Later Definition changes are then rejected or skipped.

Assert the synced commit is stored in this edit test.

The test imports a commit whose only change is the wrong-type edit. Its assertions read only the projected Word and Definition data. Replay skips that change, so the same assertions would pass if the import dropped the commit. A regression in stored sync history would not fail this test.
