feat(observability): configure opt-in OpenTelemetry export - #271
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds opt-in OTLP telemetry settings for operator and Helm gateway deployments. It validates and renders Praxis telemetry configuration and trace-context propagation, enables OpenTelemetry support in the gateway build, and documents exporter configuration and limitations. 🟡 Minor · Cap the telemetry batch values in the Helm schema. · values.schema.json:187-193
charts/praxis-gateway/values.schema.json:187-193
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winCap the telemetry batch values in the Helm schema.
When telemetry is enabled with rendered config and the supported current-head
grid-gatewayimage, this schema accepts batch intervals above 300 seconds and batch sizes above 65,536 spans. The chart writes those values unchanged intopraxis.yaml. Praxis 0.7.3 rejects them while loading the config and exits before server startup. Add the matching limits here; the operator CRD does not validate this separate Helm-values path.Suggested fix

OpenTelemetry followup: Credentialed OTLP/gRPC export over HTTPS depends on Praxis #1354 (praxis-proxy/praxis#1354), which adds the required collector certificate trust and a Praxis release containing that fix. This PR provides opt-in configuration, but HTTPS export should not be considered qualified until Grid consumes that fix and passes a collector-backed test using its tracked dependencies. The fix is needed to make TLS export actually trust and verify the collector’s certificate; enabling a TLS feature alone does not do that. Followup work tracked in #301 |

What does this PR do?
Add opt-in OpenTelemetry configuration for AGN (AI Gateway Networking) gateways, so operators can export gateway HTTP and routing spans without putting collector settings or credentials in routing overlays.
grid-gatewaywith the Praxis OTLP exporter and Praxis AI routing-span features; initialize tracing at startup and hold its guard through shutdown.GatewayRef.consumerConfigand the Praxis gateway Helm chart. An omitted or empty OTLP endpoint uses the process environment; invalid sampling rates and credential-bearing endpoint URLs are rejected.Current scope: The tracked gateway build uses registry Praxis 0.7.3 and can export local HTTP and AI routing spans. Grid now rejects exporter headers unless an explicit HTTPS endpoint is configured, but exporter startup does not prove certificate-verified delivery. Do not enable credentialed collector export until praxis#1354 is released and Grid #301 qualifies it against the tracked image. Linked edge-to-provider traces separately require praxis#1347; keep #260 open until that parentage is qualified.
Which issue(s) does this relate to?
Related to #260 and #301. This PR delivers opt-in configuration and local export groundwork. Credentialed HTTPS delivery and cross-gateway parentage remain follow-ups.
Checklist
git commit -s)make lint && make test && make test-integrationpasses locallymake lint, make test, andmake helm-lintpassed for the earlier telemetry snapshot; Helm reported 351 passes and one optional API-key runtime skip. A collector-backed check against that snapshot confirmed local span export, routing revision attributes, and W3C header propagation. The current 0.7.3 dependency and the credentialed HTTPS path require final-source collector qualification after praxis#1354. Grid has nomake test-integrationtarget.Does this introduce a breaking change?
No. Telemetry is opt-in and disabled by default. Enabling it requires a
grid-gatewayimage built with the tracing features; the chart's default Praxis AI image does not provide this Grid-specific build.Summary by CodeRabbit
