Support Codex apply_patch grammar through client-tool compatibility - #1852
Focused parser and wire-scanner Rust tests passed.
git diff --check passed.
Full live GPU acceptance is pending the vllm-full-suite lane.
Merge Danger
Door: Two-way
Blast Radius: Low
Changes are scoped to custom-tool grammar compatibility and its acceptance coverage.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Custom tools can now use supported apply_patch formats, with patch inputs checked against their grammar during processing.
Configure how grammar constraints are passed to backends: as JSON-encoded patterns, as decoded-value patterns, or not at all. Host-side validation remains in effect.
Unsupported grammars are rejected, and invalid backend patch output fails with an error rather than being returned as a successful tool call.
Documentation
Added configuration guidance and examples for grammar-based patch tools.
…ompat
Codex declares `apply_patch` as a Responses `custom` tool with a pinned Lark
grammar; `openai_client_tool_compat` rejected every non-text custom format with
HTTP 400, so the function-only backend path could not carry it.
Recognize the two pinned Codex 0.144.1 grammars (base + optional Environment-ID),
lower them to the existing `{"input":"<raw patch>"}` function envelope with a
JSON-Schema `pattern` that constrains backend generation, and restore the call to
a canonical `custom_tool_call`. Codex keeps approvals, file access, and patch
application.
- New `custom_input` module: the vendored `apply_patch.lark` (Codex 0.144.1) plus
the derived Environment-ID variant, the escaping-aware backend patterns (XGrammar
matches the raw JSON-string body) and the raw host validators.
- Declaration: a recognized grammar lowers with a pattern; an unknown grammar still
fails closed with 400 before any upstream call. The pattern encoding is config
scoped (`custom_input_pattern_encoding: json_string|decoded|none`); `json_string`
(XGrammar/vLLM) is the default.
- Restoration: a malformed decoded patch fails closed buffered (502) and streaming
(existing SSE restore-error path). Host validation of the decoded patch is the
authoritative, backend-independent guarantee.
- The recognized format rides a `format` field on `LoweredClientTool` /
`ClientToolStreamItem`; `ClientToolRestore` stays a kind discriminator.

…(xgrammar 0.2.8)
Establish the issue's backend feasibility gate (compiler behavior only; the
end-to-end half is the GPU qualification). Commit the two escaping-aware backend
patterns as fixtures that a Rust drift-guard (`backend_pattern_fixtures_match_consts`)
pins to the runtime constants, and add a Python gate that compiles the exact schema
under xgrammar and asserts constraint behavior.
- XGrammar matches a JSON-Schema `pattern` against the raw JSON-string body: the
escaping-aware `json_string` pattern accepts valid patches and rejects malformed
ones, unicode (both escaped and raw UTF-8), the Environment-ID variant gating, and
a raw-newline (invalid-JSON) document; the decoded-value pattern does NOT enforce
under XGrammar (evidence for the encoding-scoping decision).
- The gate skips loudly on any xgrammar != 0.2.8 (the pinned vLLM 0.32.0 runtime)
rather than assert behavior it has not verified.

Prove the continuation path needs no new code: a stored apply_patch
custom_tool_call carrying a raw multi-line patch re-lowers to a function_call with
the exact patch bytes (newlines preserved), and custom_tool_call/_output already
replay to a function-only backend via is_canonical_openresponses_replay_type.

Describe the pinned Codex apply_patch grammar lowering (pattern-constrained input,
custom_tool_call restoration, 400 on unknown grammars, fail-closed validation) in
the example config, and regenerate the filter doc to surface the new
custom_input_pattern_encoding field.

Add a synthetic inference fixture (scenario + recording) exercising the pinned
apply_patch Lark grammar through openai_client_tool_compat: the client declares the
grammar custom tool, the lowered upstream function carries the escaping-aware
JSON-Schema pattern, and the returned call is restored to a custom_tool_call with
the raw patch (validated). Register the feature in coverage.yaml and regenerate the
coverage README.

Deterministic scripted round-trips through the real client-tool-compat proxy: a
grammar custom tool lowers to a pattern-constrained function and restores to a
custom_tool_call with the exact patch, and a backend patch that violates the
grammar fails closed with 502. Add the OpenAI-client SDK round-trip
(TestClientToolCompatVLLM) that, on the GPU lane, proves constrained decoding emits
a grammar-valid patch restored to a custom_tool_call.

Pull the push+register, envelope-decode+validate, and custom-restore selection into
finish_custom_lowering / decoded_input / restore_custom_like, shared by the
declaration, buffered, and streaming paths. DRYs the apply_patch validation and
keeps each function within the line-length lint under pinned rustfmt. No behavior
change.

Document the two reviewed, fail-safe edges of the backend `pattern`: the
`\u[0-9a-fA-F]{4}` escape admits an encoded newline the grammar's `[^\n]` runs
exclude, and the `decoded`-encoding pattern is unanchored (JSON-Schema `pattern` is
substring per spec). Both only guide generation; the anchored host validator is
authoritative on every path and fails closed. No behavior change.
Refs praxis-proxy#1834

JSON-Schema `pattern` is a substring match, so the `custom_input_pattern_encoding:
decoded` mode previously handed a spec-compliant backend the unanchored host pattern,
which would accept junk around a valid patch as satisfying the constraint. Emit the
`^(?:…)$`-anchored form for that mode so the advertised backend constraint preserves
the full-string grammar. Host validation was already anchored and authoritative; this
only tightens the non-default decoded backend-guidance path.

…patch pattern
`$` admits a trailing line terminator under Python/PCRE semantics, which combined
with the grammar's optional final newline let an extra trailing newline satisfy the
`decoded`-encoding backend pattern. Anchor the end with `(?![\s\S])` (no character
follows), a strict end-of-input in every regex dialect, so the advertised backend
constraint is full-string in ECMA-262 and Python/PCRE alike. Host validation was
already strict; this tightens the non-default decoded backend-guidance path.

The compatibility path now supports two pinned Codex apply_patch grammars. It adds configurable backend schema patterns, validates decoded tool input during restoration, and exercises the behavior through integration tests and native and translated Codex acceptance workflows.

Explanation
The title "Support Codex apply_patch grammar through client-tool compatibility" matches the main change. The PR adds support for Codex's grammar-constrained apply_patch custom tool in openai_client_tool_compat. The changeset includes Lark grammar files, custom_input.rs grammar pinning and validation, restoration of custom_tool_call, and tests for both native Responses and Responses-to-Chat paths. The title is concise and specific, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed workflow, grammar patterns, compatibility resolver, restoration and streaming validation, tests, configuration, documentation, and inference fixtures all support issue #1834. The summary shows no general Lark compiler, proxy-side patch execution, or Codex approval or sandbox changes.

Explanation
Issue #1834 requires live qualification with an unmodified Codex CLI through native Responses and Responses-to-Chat paths. The PR description states that full live GPU acceptance is still pending. The implementation, parser and wire tests, OpenAI-client tests, restoration validation, history coverage, fixtures, and documentation address the other stated coding objectives, but they do not establish completion of this required live workflow.
Resolution
Run the apply_patch Codex CLI acceptance on both inference paths against the pinned runtime. Verify the custom-tool call, matching tool result, file change, and verification command. Record passing results before treating issue #1834 as complete.

Mark the grammar round-trip test as real-inference only.
test_apply_patch_grammar_tool_round_trip_constrains_and_restores has no @requires_real_inference marker, and neither does its class, TestClientToolCompatVLLM. The simulator jobs run pytest with -m "not real_inference and not vllm_compat", so this test is selected there. Its client_tool_compat_proxy fixture sends traffic to VLLM_BASE_URL. In CI, that address is the inference simulator on 127.0.0.1:8000.
The test asserts that the restored call.input starts with *** Begin Patch. Its docstring describes this as proof that the pattern constrains live generation. The simulator is not shown to emit a grammar-valid patch, so these assertions can fail and turn the simulator lane red. The sibling test_custom_tool_history_survives_native_responses_continuation already carries @requires_real_inference for the same reason.
