Summary

Responses state initialization now avoids duplicate input and persistence-history allocations, including when store:false.

managed request
-> check structural complexity before expensive materialization
-> share unchanged input across working histories
-> capture durable history only when persistence is enabled
-> append the original input back to Conversations when needed
  • Reuses managed state during rehydration and store input capture.
  • Keeps working input, backend messages, tools, streaming, and conversation append-back available when store:false; only persistence-only history capture is skipped.
  • Adds a reproducible Criterion benchmark for large text and many small messages.

Closes #1618.

Evidence

Run with:

cargo bench -p praxis-ai-benchmarks --features responses-state --bench responses_state

The benchmark starts from an already-parsed request and measures state initialization plus store-input capture. Fixture construction is excluded from Criterion timing. Allocation totals use allocation_counter.

Input Legacy allocations Current allocations Legacy median Current median
200 KB text 601,119 bytes / 25 400,731 bytes / 19 33.93 µs 9.61 µs
2,000 small messages 2,252,933 bytes / 34,024 1,171,031 bytes / 18,009 884.28 µs 515.83 µs

These timings are local Criterion results and will vary by machine. The two allocation regression tests pass, the benchmark target passes Clippy, and formatting and whitespace checks pass. PR CI is running for this benchmark commit.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way

Blast Radius: Responses

The change affects Responses request initialization, rehydration, persistence history, and tool-history capture. Regression coverage checks input preservation, persistence behavior, and allocation growth.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a configurable structural-complexity limit for managed Responses requests. Requests that exceed the limit are rejected with HTTP 413; the default limit is 1,000,000 nodes.
    • Added an example configuration showing how to set the limit.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Preserved original request input in Responses output and conversation history, including array-shaped input.
    • When response storage is disabled, input remains available for processing without being retained in persistence history.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the new request complexity limit and how its size is measured.

ResponsesState::from_request_body cloned the normalized input into a second owned Vec<Value>, so a request retained its input twice (plus the retained parse). Make `input` a MessageHistory that shares each item's Arc payload with `messages` and `persisted_messages`; copy-on-write still detaches an item only when a later filter mutates it, so the immutable client snapshot is preserved without a deep copy.

Add structural and allocation regression tests for large-text and many-small-object inputs (the shapes praxis-proxy#1618 calls out).

The change reduces initialization memory, but streamed responses with large inputs can still copy the whole input on every chunk. Their budget reservation also no longer counts the echoed input. Single-object input can skip file and document resolution. A rehydrate filter nested in an iterative router can duplicate prior turns. Fix these before merging.

Explanation

The PR addresses all coding requirements in directly linked issue [#1618]. ResponsesState now shares normalized input with working history, skips persistence-only history when store:false, and reuses managed state during rehydration and store-input capture. Managed requests enforce structural complexity before state materialization, including requests without an agentic-loop filter. The changes preserve original input, conversation append-back, backend input, and persistence behavior through focused unit, integration, and regression tests. Allocation tests cover large text and many small messages.

…equest_body

Sharing the input snapshot shortened from_request_body to the 30-line threshold, so clippy 1.96 no longer trips `too_many_lines` and the `#[expect]` became unfulfilled under lean per-group builds (lint-clippy, store-features). Extract tool_choice resolution into `request_tool_choice_or_auto` and remove the stale expectation.

from_request_body moved `input` into normalized shared items, but the parameter object still held a second decoded copy. Keep parameters and the current input separately: `input` is moved out of `request_body` at construction and through `set_request_params`, its original shape is recorded in `InputForm`, and a borrow-only `CurrentRequestBody` serializer reproduces the client's form (including the string shorthand) for MCP tool discovery without a second owned copy. The inference body is unchanged (built from the effective message history).

Unsupported scalar inputs cannot be normalized or reconstructed, so they stay in the parameters for existing validators (Chat-completions translation) to reject, preserving prior behavior. file_resolve, doc_extract and mcp_tool_resolve route body rewrites through `set_request_params` so a resolved body never reintroduces a duplicate input copy.

Refs praxis-proxy#1618

Three fixes from the praxis-proxy#1618 review: (1) set_request_params applies the same scalar carve-out as from_request_body via a shared input_is_normalizable helper, so MCP tool resolution no longer strips an unsupported scalar input that Chat translation must still reject; (2) the deferred MCP body-size check counts the retained current input (held outside request_body) so a large input plus discovered schemas cannot bypass max_rewritten_body_bytes; (3) unlink the mcp-gated input_form references in doc comments so cargo doc --document-private-items succeeds without openai-mcp-tools.

…ound

The first body-size fix summed the original input snapshot, but after file/document resolution the resolved payload lives in the message history (state.input stays the original reference) and the separate sum omitted the input member framing. Serialize a borrowed ExpandedBodyWithInput view (expanded parameters + the resolved current-input tail of the history) so the rewritten-body bound counts the resolved payload and the input framing, matching the pre-praxis-proxy#1618 whole-body measurement without cloning.

…ze check

Taking the tail of the message history by input length selected appended model output (reasoning + tool_search_call) instead of the resolved current input once an agentic round had run, letting an oversized expansion bypass max_rewritten_body_bytes. Measure the same message projection the outbound serializer sends (from the provider-owned start offset), so the bound reflects exactly what is transmitted regardless of appended output or later rounds.

…izer

The hand-rolled size view serialized raw history items, but the real outbound translates compaction items to assistant messages, so locally-compacted requests over-counted and could be rejected below the cap. Set the expanded tools, then reuse responses_proxy::serialized_outbound_body_len (which applies compaction translation and the provider-owned start offset) to bound exactly what is transmitted. Removes the bespoke ExpandedBodyWithInput/check_json_body_size helpers.

Refs praxis-proxy#1618

Signed-off-by: Sébastien Han <seb@redhat.com>
Add a filter-level regression where small expanded tools fit max_rewritten_body_bytes but a large current input pushes the measured outbound body over it, yielding 413. Guards the praxis-proxy#1618 behavior that the input (now held in the message history, not request_body) is included in the deferred-expansion bound; a measurement ignoring it would wrongly continue.

Managed Responses creates materialize memory proportional to structural size (normalized input, Arc-shared working/persistence histories, persistence capture), which a byte cap misses for many-small-object inputs. The agentic retained-payload budget (praxis-proxy#1475/praxis-proxy#1483) only applies when an agentic-loop filter is configured, leaving non-agentic managed creates unbounded. Add a configurable max_input_nodes guard (depth-bounded, early-stopping, O(depth) aux, no clone) over the parsed body, enforced for every managed create before expansion and at the alternate initialization paths (rehydration, MCP state creation) so none can bypass it. Includes an example config + functional test and unit coverage for boundaries, many-small-objects, and depth.

…body (praxis-proxy#1618)

from_request_body moves `input` out of `request_body` at state init so the
payload is decoded once (praxis-proxy#1618). Response synthesis echoed `input` onto the
Responses resource by borrowing `request_body["input"]`, which is now absent, so
the resource emitted an empty/null `input` — caught by the inference-fixture
replay for responses/chat-basic-nonstream.

Reconstruct the client's input in its original shape from the shared history via
a new `input_echo_value` helper and feed it to the buffered and streaming
response builders. This also fixes a latent correctness gap in lean
(non-mcp) builds, where the echo was already broken: `input_form` is ungated to
`openai-responses` since response synthesis is core, while `CurrentRequestBody`
stays gated on `openai-mcp-tools`.

Add a buffered-translation regression test asserting the resource echoes array
input moved out of request_body, plus `input_echo_value` unit tests covering
every input shape in lean builds.

…proxy#1618)

The response store re-parsed the entire request body in on_request_body solely
to extract `input` for persistence, duplicating the decode ResponsesState
already performed. Reuse the input snapshot via `input_echo_value` when a
ResponsesState is present, falling back to parsing the body only for a standalone
store passthrough that has no managed/translation filter.

Add a regression test proving capture reconstructs input from state even when the
request body has been stripped of `input` (as from_request_body leaves it).

Signed-off-by: Sébastien Han <seb@redhat.com>
…sing (praxis-proxy#1618)

When a managed owner (openai_responses_request) has already decoded the request
into ResponsesState, rehydration re-parsed the same body and rebuilt a second
state, discarding the first. Reuse the existing state and merge stored history
into it; the selectors it validated remain in request_body (only input was
stripped), so previous_response_id/conversation are re-read there with the same
validation. Complexity is already enforced by the managed owner, so the reuse
path skips the redundant re-guard; a standalone rehydrate chain with no managed
owner still parses once and enforces the bound.

Add a unit test proving the owner's state (sentinel field) is reused rather than
rebuilt from a fresh parse.

…raxis-proxy#1618)

Add an allocation-through-init guard measuring the whole from_request_body, not
just the snapshot clone: moving input out of the parsed body and sharing it
across input, messages, and persisted_messages must never deep-copy the payload,
so a 200 KiB payload allocates no more than a tiny one.

Charge the moved-out input in the streaming snapshot reserve.

reserve_chat_stream_snapshots sizes source from state.request_body, state.tools, and the tool choice. Before this PR, request_body contained input, so the CHAT_STREAM_ECHO_MULTIPLIER reserve covered the echoed input. Now input is stripped from request_body.

The streaming path still echoes the full input onto response.created and the terminal snapshot, via input_echo_value. The reserve and output_allowance therefore under-count that copy. Large inputs are admitted against a smaller budget than they use.

Add the size of state.input to source. MessageHistory shares its payloads, but the echo materializes owned copies. Check reserve_finite_chat_response for the same gap.

         let source = request.checked_add(tools)?.checked_add(choice)?;
+        let input = bounded_json_size(&state.input, MAX_JSON_BODY_BYTES).ok().flatten()?;
+        let source = source.checked_add(input)?;

Move tool-search items into the accumulator after persistence.

Both streaming tool-search branches clone a response item into accumulated_output, then pass the original by reference to persist_collected_output. Persist first and move the item into accumulated_output, as the buffered collector already does. This removes two full-item clones on the streaming path.

As per coding guidelines, “Avoid cloning request, response, header, body, or SSE data unless the copy is necessary for correctness.” As per path instructions, “Flag cloning of request, response, header, body, or SSE data where borrowing, moving, or sharing through an existing ownership boundary would work.”

Handle object-form input in document extraction.

extract_current_input accepts only array-form input, so an object containing an input_file can be skipped before synchronization. The synchronization code also ignores object-form input. Normalize objects to one-item slices in both paths.

Update `extract_current_input` to extract from object-form `input` by treating
the object as a one-item slice, while preserving array handling and the existing

Handle object-form input throughout resolution and synchronization.

The current resolver and extractors process only array-form input. Object-form input returns zero before file resolution or document extraction, and the synchronization branches also ignore it. A synchronization-only change is insufficient.

Update input handling across file resolution, document extraction, and

Share bridge items between histories.

When persistence is enabled, bridge.iter().cloned() copies both JSON values before bridge moves into persisted history. The bridge can contain formatted search results. Append shared MessageHistory items instead, and let copy-on-write detach an item if a later filter changes it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…xy#1618)

Two regressions from reconstructing the input echo after praxis-proxy#1618 moved input out
of request_body:

- Budget under-reservation: the finite (reserve_finite_chat_response) and
streaming (reserve_chat_stream_snapshots) echo projections sized only
request_body, which no longer holds input, so a large input echo was admitted
unreserved. Include state.input in both reservations.

- Per-callback echo rebuild: every streaming SSE callback reconstructed the full
input, so heartbeats allocated it repeatedly. Reconstruct once per stream,
cached on the converter (EchoedInput), and echo it only when a lifecycle
  resource is built.

Add regression tests: a finite reservation that rejects when the moved-out input
no longer fits, and an allocation guard that heartbeat callbacks do not rebuild
the input echo.

…and reuse paths

- rehydrate: skip the reuse merge when history is already restored, so an
iterative_request_router re-entry does not duplicate backend input and
persisted history (the in-place merge regressed the old rebuild-fresh behavior).
- config: make max_input_nodes a NonZeroUsize so a 0 fails at config-parse time
instead of a runtime check; drop the runtime guards in from_config and
  complexity::enforce; regenerate the filter doc.
- structural-complexity-limit example: emit valid JSON for the rejected-request
curl so it reaches max_input_nodes rather than tripping on_invalid first.
- complexity functional test: assert the backend received the forwarded input.
- add streaming echo-from-state and null/scalar echo assertion-message tests.

Regression tests: rehydrate re-entry no longer duplicates history; the finite
echo reservation already counted input (prior commit); streaming echoes input
from state.
