eventservice: preserve spilled inserts on scan retry (#6668) - #6825
A failed scan of a split large transaction can delete deferred inserts from earlier fragments after their row cursor has already been published. An in-place retry resumes after that cursor, so the inserts can be lost.
What is changed and how it works?
Save the existing spill offset and phase before each original-row scan. On failure, truncate only records written by that attempt and restore the phase; clean up the spill only when the failed attempt created it. If rollback fails, complete it before another scan or drain. Delay same-commit DDL spill cleanup until the iterator closes successfully.
Add deterministic tests for append and iterator-close errors after a published fragment, plus a partial spill record and a failed rollback. They verify that each row's delete and insert appears once after retry.
Check List
Tests
Unit test: go test -tags=intest ./pkg/eventservice ./pkg/spill -count=1
Unit test with race detector for the new regressions and same-commit DDL path
Questions
Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?
No compatibility change. An active large-transaction spill adds one file-size check per original-row scan attempt.
Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?
No. This changes internal scan failure recovery.
Release note
Fix a potential data loss when retrying a large transaction after a spill write or iterator-close failure.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved recovery when processing large transactions encounters a scan or spill-storage error, helping retries avoid losing or duplicating change events.
Improved handling of schema changes that occur alongside transaction updates, including when processing resumes after an error.
Block status updates are now collected over a short batching window, allowing closely timed updates to be sent together.

Event scanning now snapshots original-scan state and rolls it back after scan or iterator-close errors. Spill cleanup is deferred, and RecordFile adds size and truncation operations. The PR also makes block-status batching configurable and changes a TiDB integration script.
Changes: Event scan retry and spill recovery
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Checkpoint and spill rollback primitives pkg/eventservice/large_txn_state.go, pkg/spill/record_file.go, pkg/eventservice/large_txn_spill_test.go
Large-transaction state records original-scan checkpoints. RecordFile adds size and truncation methods. A test covers rollback recovery after a partial spill write.
Scan retry and deferred cleanup pkg/eventservice/event_scanner.go, pkg/eventservice/txn_scan_strategy.go
The scanner recovers and snapshots original-scan state, and rolls it back on scan or iterator-close errors. Spill cleanup is deferred, with transaction progress handled before cleanup. The dmlProcessor field hunk contains merge-conflict markers and repeated declarations.
Retry and event-order tests pkg/eventservice/event_scanner_test.go
New tests cover append and iterator-close failures, same-commit DDL, spill cleanup, and emitted row and event ordering.
The PR cannot merge as-is: unresolved conflicts block the CDC build and MySQL integration tests. Completed transaction spill files can also remain after a transient removal failure when the dispatcher becomes idle.

Explanation
The title "eventservice: preserve spilled inserts on scan retry (#6668)" matches the main change. The changeset adds rollback of the original-scan spill state, so a failed scan retry keeps the deferred inserts from earlier fragments. The title names the package, the behavior, and the cherry-picked PR number. Its wording is specific, so a teammate scanning history can identify the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It includes the problem statement, a change summary with the rollback approach, test commands, performance and compatibility answers, documentation answer, and a release note. Two gaps remain. The Issue Number line reads "close #6415" but the template expects it to start with "Issue Number:" on its own line, and this is present. The unit test with the race detector lacks a command. The "Will it cause performance regression" answer is complete. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #6415 is closed and is marked as historical context only. It is the only directly linked issue, so no active linked-issue coding requirements apply. The PR is not assessed against the issue's suggested fix or its expected behavior. The PR also states that it addresses the scenario in #6415. Note: the reviewed head contains unresolved merge-conflict markers in pkg/eventservice/event_scanner.go and tests/integration_tests/tidb_mysql_test/test.sh. These markers prevent the spill-retry changes from building and running. This is reported under the out-of-scope assessment, not as a requirement failure.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR contains changes that do not connect to the spill-retry fix described in the PR description and #6415. (1) downstreamadapter/dispatchermanager/dispatcher_manager.go: collectBlockStatusRequest now delegates to a new collectBlockStatusRequestWithWindow(ctx, batchWindow) method. The batching window changes from a fixed 10 ms to a parameter. The PR description does not mention block-status batching. The summary also reports a matching change in dispatcher_manager_test.go, which uses a 500 ms window and a 2 s timeout. (2) tests/integration_tests/tidb_mysql_test/test.sh: adds a 'SET GLOBAL tidb_redact_log = OFF' command, which is unrelated to eventservice scan recovery. (3) Unresolved merge-conflict markers (<<<<<<< HEAD, =======, >>>>>>> 8a99ef1) appear in pkg/eventservice/event_scanner.go in the dmlProcessor struct and in tests/integration_tests/tidb_mysql_test/test.sh. The conflict in event_scanner.go also duplicates the filter, dispatcherStat, and spillDir fields. These markers are not part of the intended change and make the affected packages fail to compile.
Resolution
(1) Remove the conflict markers from pkg/eventservice/event_scanner.go. Keep one copy of each dmlProcessor field. Keep the intended fields cleanupLargeTxnAfterScan and filterContext only if the code uses them. (2) Remove the conflict markers from tests/integration_tests/tidb_mysql_test/test.sh. Remove the tidb_redact_log change unless a separate, justified reason is documented. (3) Revert the batching-window change in dispatcher_manager.go and its related change in dispatcher_manager_test.go from this PR. If the batching change is needed, submit it in a separate PR with its own linked issue. (4) Rebuild and rerun go test -tags=intest ./pkg/eventservice ./pkg/spill -count=1 after the conflicts are resolved.

Retry completed spill cleanup independently of scanning.
If spill removal fails after a same-commit DDL scan, the broker accepts the scan progress but does not register the cleanup for retry. An idle dispatcher can retain the spill file even after the filesystem failure clears. Schedule cleanup independently of later scans.

The conflict markers make event_scanner.go invalid Go. They block make check, package tests, and the CDC binary build. Resolve the conflict into one field declaration block and retain cleanupLargeTxnAfterScan, which the scanner and strategy use.
