Tool plugins can now authenticate their downloads. A PreInstall hook can return a headers table next to url and sha256, so mise downloads, verifies and records artifacts that need a Bearer token or a custom Accept header, such as private GitHub release assets or Artifactory.

function PLUGIN:PreInstall(ctx)
    return {
        version = ctx.version,
        url = "https://api.github.com/repos/acme/dist/releases/assets/12345",
        sha256 = sha256,
        headers = {
            Accept = "application/octet-stream",
            Authorization = "Bearer " .. token,
        },
    }
end

Previously headers was silently ignored, so plugins had to download in PostInstall and lost checksum and attestation verification, retries and lockfile URLs.

  • Headers go only to the origin (scheme, host, port) of url. A redirect to another origin, such as a signed storage URL, drops them.
  • Header values are marked sensitive, so PreInstall debug/trace output redacts them.
  • Headers are not part of mise.lock or install identity.
  • An explicit Authorization header overrides netrc and the automatic GitHub token.
  • A non-string value or invalid header name is a plugin error.

Tests cover parsing and redaction, and a download that sends the headers and drops them on a cross-origin redirect. Docs are in tool-plugin-development.md.

Implements the request in #14527.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes install-time HTTP behavior and credential forwarding rules; mistakes could leak tokens to mirrors or redirect targets, though the origin-scoping logic and tests target that risk.

Overview
PreInstall plugins can return a headers table so mise can download private or token-gated artifacts through the normal install path (checksums, retries, verification) instead of custom PostInstall downloads.

Parsing validates string UTF-8 header names/values, marks values sensitive for redacted Debug output, and wires headers into download(). When plugin headers are present, downloads use a no-auto-redirect client and manual redirect following so those headers are sent only to the origin of the plugin’s url—not URL-rewritten mirrors and not cross-origin redirect targets (e.g. signed blob storage). Plugin Authorization overrides the HTTP headers resolver on the same hop.

Docs add the headers field and an authenticated-download example; tests cover parsing, redaction, redirect/mirror behavior, redirect limits, and header precedence.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Plugin downloads can now use custom HTTP headers for authenticated and other header-based requests. Headers are sent only to the original URL’s origin and are omitted for cross-origin redirects and configured mirror URLs. Custom authorization headers take precedence over other authorization sources.
    • Header values are excluded from debug output and mise.lock.
  • Documentation
    • Added examples and guidance for authenticated plugin downloads, header handling, and interactions with other authentication options.

📝 Walkthrough

Pre-install hooks can now provide validated HTTP headers for downloads. The installer uses these headers at the original URL’s origin and does not forward them to cross-origin redirects or rewritten mirrors.

Changes: Authenticated downloads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse plugin download headers
crates/vfox/src/hooks/pre_install.rs, docs/tool-plugin-development.md
PreInstall accepts an optional Lua headers table. It validates header names and values, marks values sensitive, and documents the field. Tests cover parsing, invalid values, and debug redaction.
Apply headers across redirects

Downloads pass plugin headers to the request path. When headers are nonempty, the installer follows redirects manually and sends plugin headers only to the original URL’s origin. Tests cover cross-origin redirects, rewritten mirrors, redirect limits, and authorization precedence.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

74ce07143565 vs 530e8d085dbf · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
