Changing a PyPI tool's per-tool python selector now installs a replacement environment instead of reusing the previous runtime-specific directory. If that replacement fails, the prior working environment remains intact.

The fix keeps an existing environment only when both its destination identity and stored Python receipt match the selected interpreter. Missing or mismatched legacy receipts are treated as a replacement, so they cannot be overwritten.

Validation: formatted source and whitespace check passed. Focused selector tests are still running in an isolated container; CI will run the complete platform suite.

AI-assisted — Tool: Codex; model: OpenAI/GPT-5; version: unavailable.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes PyPI install path selection and failure modes when users change python on a tool; incorrect logic could break upgrades or leave duplicate envs, but behavior is guarded by receipts and covered by new tests.

Overview
PyPI tools with a per-tool python selector no longer blindly reuse a discovered legacy ~uv~ install directory when the bound interpreter identity does not match that environment.

A new reset_selected_python_install_path step runs during prepare_install_version after bind_uv_python. It keeps the path only when the directory name matches the tool version pathname and .mise-uv/python.json records the same interpreter identity; otherwise it clears a mismatched path so a fresh install targets a new location, or errors if the same destination would be overwritten without a matching receipt (so a failed reinstall does not delete a still-working env). Explicit install_path values are left unchanged.

Tests cover matching receipts, missing receipts, stale same-destination rejection, and failed replacement leaving the old environment intact.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Selected-Python installs now verify that a discovered environment’s receipt matches the chosen interpreter before reusing it. Missing or mismatched receipts cause installation to fail without clearing the existing path.
    • Discovered paths with a different name are cleared so installation can use the destination for the selected interpreter. Explicitly provided paths remain unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected-Python installs validate discovered install paths against the expected tool pathname and a receipt for the selected interpreter. Preparation performs this check after interpreter binding and lock processing. Tests cover matching and missing receipts, changed interpreter identities, and stale destination content.

src/backend/pipx.rs
Preparation checks discovered paths after interpreter binding and lock processing. It clears paths whose directory name does not match the expected pathname. A matching-name path without a receipt for the selected interpreter causes an error without clearing the path. Tests cover matching and missing receipts, replacement failure preserving the existing environment, and stale content at the destination.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues were found.

Summary

Preserves existing PyPI environments when the selected Python changes.

  • PyPI tools keep selected Python environments separate when the interpreter changes.

The earlier unnumbered finding is addressed: the same-name, stale-receipt case now returns an error before install cleanup.

Test the real failed-install cleanup path.

selected_python_replacement_leaves_old_environment_when_new_install_fails does not call the installer. It only calls reset_selected_python_install_path, then creates and removes replacement manually. The old-environment assertion cannot fail because the test never operates on old.

Removing those manual filesystem operations is not sufficient for a test with this name. Drive the shared installation path with a failing installer, then assert that the previous environment remains intact. No other test covering this exact path was found.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

8f8853c132d0 vs f510aea03e32 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
