fix(dotfiles): stop machines swapping ciphertext for an unchanged encrypted file - #14405
Conversation
…rypted file Encrypted capture reused the machine's cached ciphertext whenever the plaintext was unchanged, even after a merge had taken another machine's ciphertext for the same content. Each machine then put its own envelope back, the other saw that as an incoming change, and `mise dot watch` looped forever. On a cache hit that disagrees with HEAD, capture now keeps HEAD's ciphertext when it decrypts to the same content. Capture compared each encrypted file's cached ciphertext with history by starting a git ls-tree per file. Batch them into a single ls-tree. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4TV55CCJR68HHMQ1V7Z5Z6S

paths in one `ls-tree` invocation, which can exceed the OS argument limit and
abort capture. Process paths through bounded batches or reuse `object_at` per
path, inserting only found objects into the result map and preserving the
empty-path behavior.

A tracked directory with thousands of encrypted files would pass every path to one git ls-tree and exceed Windows' 32,767-character limit. Batch the paths at 16 KiB of arguments per call. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4TVRJH8Z6Q8F3660FYY1XSW

With
history.sync = "sync", machines sharing an origin and tracking an encrypted file (encrypt = true) could keepmise dot watchbusy forever, publishing three commits per cycle (before apply, merge origin dotfiles, apply: applied 0 incoming change(s)) with no real edits. On one fleet this added about 24,000 commits to the shared branch. Reported in #14251.Trigger. age encryption is randomized, so two machines can hold different ciphertext for the same plaintext. Machines that joined on 2026.10.8 or earlier, before #14300, already do. mise caches each machine's own ciphertext, and when the plaintext was unchanged, capture reused that cached ciphertext even after a merge had brought in the other machine's. So each machine swapped its own ciphertext back in, the other machine saw that as an incoming change and swapped it back again, and the loop never ended. Upgrading to a build with #14300 did not stop a loop that had already started.
Fix. When the cached ciphertext differs from what history already holds, capture now keeps the ciphertext in history if it decrypts to the same content, mode and recipients. It re-encrypts only when the content or recipients actually changed. Machines that have already diverged settle after one more sync cycle, with no manual steps.
Example
Two machines on one origin, one encrypted tracked file, no edits, each stepped with
mise dot watch --once(the reporter's script, with machine B joining on 2026.10.8 first):Validation
cli/test_dotfiles_sync_encrypted_converge: an edit followed by a revert gives the second machine its own ciphertext for the same content. After both machines sync, origin keeps one ciphertext and further save/sync rounds publish nothing. Onorigin/mainthe test fails because the first machine puts its own ciphertext back.adopt_encrypted_reuse,encrypted_capture,encrypted_diff,save_re_encrypt,sync_files_encrypted,profile_variant_encrypted,sync_stable.cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warningspasses. This does not change two other points from the discussion: an apply that applies nothing still records one
before applycommit and oneapplycommit, and an apply commit can carry local edits under theapplied 0label. Both stop repeating once the ciphertext settles.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: claude-code_2-1-295_agent.

Changes encrypted dotfile capture and OID selection in shared git history; wrong logic could corrupt or churn ciphertext, but behavior is guarded by
holdsand covered by new e2e tests.Overview
Fixes an infinite dotfiles sync loop where machines kept publishing new commits because age produces different ciphertext for the same plaintext and capture reused each machine’s local encryption cache even after a merge had adopted the peer’s blob.
Encrypted capture now batch-loads existing tree entries with new
objects_at(chunkedls-tree) instead of one git call per file. When choosing which OID to write, the local cache is used only if it already matches history; otherwise capture keeps the ciphertext already in history when it still represents the same decrypted content, mode, and recipients (holds), and only re-encrypts when content or recipients actually changed.Adds e2e
test_dotfiles_sync_encrypted_converge(two homes, edit/revert, divergent blobs, then stableorigin/main) and a unit test for batched path lookup.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 1b29d0d. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
