On Windows, a tool installed with aqua's symlink_bins, github's filter_bins, or a packslip gets a .mise-bins directory holding only its declared executables. On Windows those entries are byte copies, and a copy runs from .mise-bins. A program that finds its DLLs or data next to its own executable then looks in the wrong place. For example, exiftool looks for exiftool_files\ beside itself and fails to start.

Now each copy records which file it was copied from, and mise x runs that file instead. Shims go through mise x, so they get the fix too.

[tools]
"github:denoland/deno" = { version = "2.5.6", asset_pattern = "deno-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip", filter_bins = "deno.exe" }

With this config, mise x -- deno eval 'console.log(Deno.execPath())' used to report ...\2.5.6\.mise-bins\deno.exe. It now reports ...\2.5.6\deno.exe, the file the archive installed. The new Windows e2e test checks this.

Details:

  • The record is a dotfile beside the copy (.mise-bins\.deno.exe.source) holding the original's path relative to the install, so it survives the install being moved or reached through a version link. Shim generation and PATH lookups skip dotfiles.
  • Only originals inside the install and with the same file name are recorded. Starting a renamed original would change the name the program sees itself called by, which multi-call binaries such as uutils coreutils dispatch on. When an entry cannot be recorded, any earlier record for it is removed, and mise x ignores a record that names a file of another name.
  • Existing installs have no record and keep running the copy until they are reinstalled (mise install --force).
  • mise activate puts .mise-bins itself on PATH, so a shell that finds the copy there still runs the copy. This PR fixes mise x and shims only.
  • Linux and macOS are unchanged: .mise-bins entries are symlinks there and nothing is recorded.

The aqua and github docs now describe this, and the github docs note that filter_bins needs the .exe name on Windows.

Testing

  • Unit tests cover following a record, a missing original, records that point outside the install or outside .mise-bins, and renamed entries.
  • A new Windows Pester test (e2e-win/backend/mise_bins_source.Tests.ps1) installs deno with filter_bins and checks that Deno.execPath() through mise x and through the shim is the installed deno.exe, not the .mise-bins copy. I could not run it locally; it runs in Windows CI. cargo clippy passes for Linux and x86_64-pc-windows-gnu.

Part of discussion #14369.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • On Windows, mise x and shims now launch the installed executable when resolving a program through .mise-bins. This helps programs that locate DLLs or data relative to their executable work as expected.
    • Shells that run a copy found directly on PATH, including mise activate, continue to run that copy.
    • Reinstall tools installed with older versions of mise using mise install --force to apply the updated behavior.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified Windows .mise-bins behavior and noted that GitHub backend executable names in filter_bins must include .exe.

On Windows, .mise-bins entries are copies, so a program that finds its DLLs
or data beside its own executable looked in .mise-bins and failed. Each copy
now records the file it came from, and `mise x` (and so shims) runs that file.

📝 Walkthrough

On Windows, mise records the install source for eligible copied .mise-bins entries and resolves that source when launching an entry. Aqua, GitHub, and Packslip use the shared link helper. Tests and documentation describe and verify this behavior.

Windows execution resolves .mise-bins entries to their recorded source. The Deno test checks paths through mise x and a shim. The backend docs describe Windows copy behavior; the GitHub guidance also specifies the .exe extension for filter_bins.

Change: Bug fix

On Windows, mise x and shims now launch the original executable for copied .mise-bins entries, so programs that look for DLLs or data beside their executable find them. Earlier review concerns about stale records, mismatched executable names, and missing reinstall guidance are addressed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

A record that can no longer be written is removed so an earlier one is not
followed, and a record naming a file of another name is ignored. The docs now
say existing installs need a reinstall to get records.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

60d2bb23d261 vs 88060c380d79 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
