feat(hotkeys): Show hints only for hotkeys that can fire - #199
Hotkey hints now show only when pressing the hotkey would run its callback. This PR also adds a few small APIs, so apps no longer need workarounds for things the library already knows.
Package changes
@tanstack/hotkeys
HotkeyManager.hasActiveRegistration(hotkey) returns whether a chord, sequence, or app hotkey has a registration that can fire now: enabled, in an active scope, and listening where key presses go. A document or window registration always is; an element registration is only while focus is inside the element, including inside a shadow root. App hotkeys match their registrations by id, so custom hotkeys work.
preventDefault: 'always' keeps a chord's browser action prevented while the chord can't fire, because it's disabled or its scope is inactive or suspended. A disabled Mod+S no longer opens the Save dialog. It never stops propagation, still skips typing in text fields, and doesn't apply when another hotkey handles the key, on any target or phase. Sequences treat it as true. It works in provider default options.
Registration views have a new status field: 'active', 'suspended', or 'disabled', for whether the hotkey is enabled and in an active scope. It doesn't check focus, so a cheat sheet still lists an element's hotkeys while focus is elsewhere. One private helper defines the rule. The manager's dispatch, registration views, and AppHotkeysStore.getList all use it.
The hint helpers (useHotkeyHint, createHotkeyHint, injectHotkeyHint, getHotkeyHint, HotkeyHintController) now combine the held-modifier check with hasActiveRegistration. They update when registrations, enabled, or scopes change. A hint for a hotkey with an element target shows only while focus is inside that element; focus is checked whenever a held key changes.
New scope state API that updates when scopes activate or release:
useHotkeyScopesState in React, Preact, Vue, Ember, and Octane
createHotkeyScopesState in Solid, and on Alpine's createHotkeysScope owner
injectHotkeyScopesState in Angular
getHotkeyScopesState in Svelte
HotkeyScopesStateController in Lit
@tanstack/hotkeys-devtools
The details panel shows always for preventDefault: 'always'.
Docs, examples, and skills
Hint guides describe when a hint shows, including the focus rule for element targets, instead of showing how to hide hints with enabled.
Hotkeys guides use preventDefault: 'always' in place of the "keep it enabled and return early" workaround. A new sensible defaults section recommends it for most hotkeys, explains why it isn't the default, and lists cases where it's harmful: clipboard and undo shortcuts, single keys behind an off switch, Tab, and Escape.
Cheat sheet guides filter by reg.status === 'active'. Hotkey manager guides use the new scope state API instead of subscribing to scopes by hand.
The kitchen sink examples drop their hint workarounds. The React scopes page uses useHotkeyScopesState.
The skills and their API tables are updated, and the docs sidebar lists the new reference pages.
One minor changeset covers core, devtools, and all 10 adapters.
Notes
Hints are breaking for anyone who shows a hint for a hotkey that nothing registers. Calling matchesHeldModifiers gives the old behavior. The HotkeyManager bundle is now 8.06 kB, so its size limit goes from 8 kB to 8.5 kB, and everything goes from 13 kB to 13.5 kB.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added preventDefault: 'always' to suppress browser actions even when a hotkey cannot fire. It does not stop event propagation, and sequences treat it like true.
Added reactive APIs for reading scope state across supported frameworks. Registrations now report whether they are active, suspended, or disabled.
Added a way to check whether a hotkey has an active registration.
Behavior Updates
Hotkey hints now appear only when a matching registration can fire, including when its scope is active and, for target-bound hotkeys, focus is within the target.
Documentation
Updated guides and examples to cover hint visibility, registration statuses, scope state, and browser-action behavior.
Hint helpers in every adapter now return false unless a registration of
the hotkey is enabled and in an active scope, using the new
HotkeyManager.hasActiveRegistration. App hotkeys match their
registrations by id.
Also add preventDefault: 'always', which keeps the browser's action
prevented while a chord is disabled or its scope is off; a status field
on registration views; and a scope state API in each adapter.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The core manager adds registration statuses, active-registration checks, and preventDefault: 'always'. Framework adapters update hint visibility based on registration state and add reactive scope-state APIs. Documentation, examples, and tests cover these changes across supported frameworks.

Adapter hint helpers require matching held modifiers and an active registration. Hint visibility updates when registration state changes. Example hints no longer use a separate enabled-state gate.
Framework adapters add APIs to read scope state. Tests and examples cover active, exclusive, suspended, and released scopes.

Explanation
[#198] The PR changes all listed hint helpers to require held-modifier matches and an active registration. The core hasActiveRegistration check covers enabled state, active scopes, app-hotkey IDs, and target focus, including shadow roots. The PR adds tests for unregistered, disabled, suspended, re-enabled, and target-focused cases. Registration status and scope-state APIs provide the required reactive updates.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR includes changes not required by [#198]. These changes add preventDefault: 'always' to core behavior, tests, devtools display, guides, skills, and changesets. The PR also changes bundle-size limits and adds broad scope-state API documentation and example updates beyond the hint behavior. These changes do not implement the linked issue's hint visibility requirement.
Resolution
Move the preventDefault: 'always' implementation and its tests, devtools changes, documentation, skills, changeset content, and bundle-limit changes to a separate PR with a linked issue. Keep scope-state and registration-status changes only where they directly support reactive hint visibility.

…Lit controllers
A disabled chord with preventDefault: 'always' now checks hotkeys on every
listener the event reaches, including other targets and the capture phase,
before preventing the browser's action. A live hotkey anywhere decides.
Lit's hint and scope state controllers request a render when they
reconnect, so changes made while disconnected show. The Lit guide points
to shared options instead of default options.

hasActiveRegistration now also requires the registration's target to
receive key presses: always for document and window, and for an element
only while focus is inside it, including inside a shadow root. Every
adapter's hint helper uses it, so a hint for an element-targeted hotkey
shows only while that element has focus.
Registration status doesn't check focus, so docs now describe it as
enabled and in an active scope.
When focus moves into or out of an element target while a modifier remains held, hasActiveRegistration can change without a registration or key-state change. Extend the manager’s target-listener lifecycle to notify manager.registrations subscribers on focus transitions. React, Lit, Svelte, and the other adapters already subscribe to that store, so a manager-level notification avoids separate adapter-specific focus subscriptions. Add regression coverage for focus changes while the modifier remains held.

…lt 'always'
Check a registration's target against the event's composed path instead
of containment of event.target. Listeners outside a shadow root see the
host as event.target, so a live hotkey on an element inside the shadow
root was missed and the browser action was prevented anyway.
Add the new scope state APIs, HotkeyScopesState, and
HotkeyRegistrationStatus to the docs sidebar.
A repeated keydown must not count as a live sequence handler because #processSequences skips it. An expired sequence must not count its stale current step as a live handler because #processSequences resets that progress before matching.
Otherwise, #handledByLiveHotkey can suppress preventDefault: 'always' for a disabled matching chord. Ignore repeated keydowns, and only consider the current step when the sequence has not timed out. Preserve first-step matching so an expired sequence can restart.
