Requested by Brian · project thread

This PR fixes gaps Brian hit while building a spellbook tool.

1. Processors inside Piece(..., processors=[|])

  • Piece's processors takes a processor list's id or an inline list (Id<worldgen/processor_list> | ProcessorList). Before, an inline list was a type error.
  • The Template argument at the cursor is checked against its parameter's type for the editor (templateArgInfo). Completion inside lists, objects and calls in the argument now reads those types, so [|] lists processors and [Rule(|)] lists Rule's fields.
  • After processors = |, the other parameters' names are no longer offered.
  • ListItemInfo looks through nested unions, so a raw TemplatePool's processors = [|] lists processors too.

2. Storage ids in commands

After storage, completion offers <ns>:mms and the storage ids the project's commands use. After <ns>:mms, it offers each Storage and its fields.

3. TextFile("|") paths

The list gives paths relative to the project's Root instead of file:///…, and leaves out .mmsbook files from outside the project.

4. Storage fields that hold one of a few strings

mode: "x" | "y" is a string field. Setting it to a string literal outside the union is an error, and so is +=. It starts at its first string.

5. ${...} hover

It names the Global or Storage field read there. It says when the value is filled in, which depends on where the text is: a book, function code, or other text.

6. Records written in place in a Type

  • blah: { x: int y: int } now parses, with fields separated by commas or line breaks, defaults and doc comments as in a Type body.
  • Map types keep working. {string: T} (a lone field named string, or one with a PascalCase name) reads as a map, and so does {Id<...>: T}. The record and map alternatives part at the second token, so a half-typed field still recovers inside the record. The parser is regenerated with gen.sh.
  • Functions reach nested Storage fields by path, such as s.blah.x, through in-place records and other Types. The load function sets each nested field's default.
  • Completion after s.blah. lists the record's fields, and hovers show nested fields' types.
  • The formatter prints an in-place record as a block. It stays on one line when it was written on one line, and a new golden file covers it.

7. Const lists in function code

  • modes[st.mode] reads an item at a run-time index, with one branch per item. An index outside the list gives 0 or "".
  • ${len(modes)} in code is the number it writes, the same as len(modes).
  • The functions guide shows how to cycle through modes.

Tests

  • New completion matrix rows cover all of the above.
  • The new TestStorageChoices, TestStorageNested and TestConstListIndex run the compiled functions in the test VM.
  • New error cases are in TestStorageErrors.
  • The new TestPieceProcessors, TestBookTextCompletionURI and TestMarkupExprHover, and the records formatter golden file, cover the rest.
  • go test ./... in engine passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added inline record types, including nested fields and defaults.
    • Jigsaw pieces can now use inline processor lists or reference a processor list by ID.
    • Added support for nested storage fields, string-choice values, and indexing constant lists in functions.
    • Improved editor suggestions and hover details for storage, templates, and book text.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved formatting for inline and nested record types.
    • Storage completion now shows project-relative book paths without duplicate entries.

Inside `Piece("a", processors = [|])` completion offered the next
parameter's name and processor list ids, never processors such as Rule.

- Piece's `processors` takes a processor list's id or an inline list
  (`Id<worldgen/processor_list> | ProcessorList`); an inline list was a
  type error before.
- The argument of a Template call the cursor is in is checked against
the parameter's type for the editor, so completion inside lists,
objects and calls in the argument reads the types there
  (`[Rule(|)]` lists Rule's fields).
- The value of a named Template argument no longer offers the other
  parameters' names.
- A list inside a union inside a union is found, so a raw TemplatePool's
  `processors = [|]` offers processors too.

Walkthrough

The PR adds inline record types, nested storage behavior, and constant-list indexing. It also updates Jigsaw processor arguments and IDE completion, book-path completion, and markup hover.

Changes

Inline record types and storage behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and format inline record types
engine/syntax/*, engine/types/types.go, engine/format/format.go, engine/format/testdata/records.*, site/reference/language/values.md
The parser, type resolver, and formatter support inline record types and map keys. Fixtures and language documentation include the record syntax.
Support nested storage and constant-list indexing
engine/sema/storage.go, engine/sema/fn.go, engine/project/storage_test.go, site/guides/functions.md
Storage defaults recurse through records, and field access supports nested paths and string choices. Function code supports constant-list indexing with compile-time checks and runtime branches. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

IDE completion and markup information

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve Template argument completion
engine/ide/evalnames.go, engine/ide/ide.go, engine/sema/ide.go, engine/ide/complete_matrix_test.go
Template argument completion uses parameter types, searches nested unions for list types, and adjusts named-parameter suggestions based on cursor position.
Complete storage IDs and nested paths
engine/command/complete.go, engine/ide/ide.go, engine/ide/typepos.go, engine/ide/complete_matrix_test.go
Command and IDE completion provide storage IDs and paths, including nested fields. Type completion handles a record’s sole field in a type expression.
Improve book path completion and markup hover
engine/ide/assets.go, engine/ide/book.go, engine/ide/book_test.go, engine/ide/markup_hover_test.go
TextFile completion deduplicates project-relative paths and excludes URI paths outside the project root. Markup hover provides timing details and available declaration or field information.

Inline Jigsaw processors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Accept inline Piece processors
engine/prelude/jigsaw.mms, engine/project/jigsaw_test.go, site/guides/resources.md
Piece accepts an inline ProcessorList or a processor-list ID. A project test checks both forms, and the guide describes them.

Editing nested storage record fields or string-choice lists can leave stale compiled functions and diagnostics until a full rebuild. Optional or parenthesized record fields can also initialize to zero instead of their declared defaults. Resolve both before merging.

`/data modify storage |` offered nothing, since a storage id is a plain
resource location with no registry. After `storage`, completion now
offers the storage the project's Storage declarations live in
(`<ns>:mms`) and the storage ids the project's commands already use.
After that storage's id, it offers each Storage and its fields
(`game`, `game.wave`).

The language server names files by URI, so TextFile's path completion
offered file:///... instead of the path in the project that TextFile
takes. The paths are now given relative to the project's Root, and
.mmsbook files outside the project are left out.

`mode: "x" | "y"` in a Storage's Type was "another type" that functions
could not read. A union of string literals, or a string enum, is now a
string field: functions read it, setting it to a string literal outside
the union is an error (`+=` too, as it would leave neither), and the
load function starts it at its first string.

The hover on `${...}` in text markup said "filled in when the reader
first opens the book" everywhere. It now says so only in a book. In
function code it is filled in when the line runs, and elsewhere when
the text is shown. It also names the Global or Storage field written
there, with its type and doc comment.

`blah: { x: int y: int }` in a Type failed to parse: braces in a type
were only a map, `{string: T}`. A record type written in place now
parses, with fields separated by commas or line breaks, defaults and
doc comments as in a Type body. A lone field named `string` (or with a
PascalCase name) still reads as a map, and a map with an `Id<...>` key
still parses as one; the two parse alternatives part at the second
token, so a half-typed field still recovers inside the record.

Functions reach a Storage's nested fields by path (`s.blah.x`), through
in-place records and other Types; the load function sets each nested
field's default; completion after `s.blah.` lists its fields; hovers
show the nested field's type. The formatter prints an in-place record
as a block, on one line when written on one line.

`modes[spellbook_state.mode]` was an error: an index in function code
had to name an objective's score. A const list of int or string
constants can now be read at any int index; when the index is known
only as the function runs, each item gets a branch, and an index
outside the list gives 0 or "". `${len(modes)}` in code is the number
it writes, the same as `len(modes)`. The functions guide shows cycling
through modes with them.

Include nested fields and string choices in the storage signature.

Changing a nested field type or a string-choice list leaves storageSig unchanged. Incremental analysis can then reuse a function’s stale code and diagnostics.

Include nested record fields recursively, including named records, and storageChoices in the signature. Add incremental-analysis tests for both changes.

Verify that storagePaths handles the exact ID used by storageIDs.

storageIDs yields fn.Storage(sym.NS), which is ns:mms. storagePaths filters by the same function, so the two stay consistent. The ::mms::+tn.Name lookup is the only place the type name resolves. A Storage declared with a non-TypeName type, such as an inline record, gets only its top-level path. The PR adds nested record Storage support, so nested paths like game.blah.x are not suggested for record types. The sym.Decl.Type.(*syntax.TypeName) check skips them.

Consider recursing through TypeRecord fields and nested struct fields to produce dotted paths.

Add a separate test for constant indexes in listIndex.

The evaluator reports this error before listIndex receives the expression. The current assertion therefore does not cover the new constant-index branch. Keep this expectation and add a sema-level test for valid and out-of-range constant indexes.

Comment thread engine/sema/storage.go Resolved
…fields and choices

The load function lost a record field's inner defaults when its type was
optional or in parentheses. The Storage signature ignored nested fields and
string choices, so incremental analysis could reuse a function's stale code
after either changed. Command completion now offers nested storage paths.
