Fixes #3338.

Problem

Incremental sync never re-parsed the callers of a base-class method or a Protocol method when a new subclass override or Protocol conformer appeared: no edge pointed at the new file and no unresolved reference existed, so base.py and lib.py were never re-parsed. A fresh index fans out via CallResolver.self_dispatch_targets / protocol_dispatch_targets, so incremental and fresh indexes diverged until a full re-index. The issue repro: adding split.py (Splitter(Transformer) overriding do_match) and real.py (Real conforming to the Client Protocol) added neither split.Splitter.do_match nor real.Real.get to the unchanged callers.

Fix

Dispatch dependents are computed from the old graph plus the new source bytes, before the changed files' subtrees are deleted, and queued through the waiters sets of both incremental paths (batch _process_files and scoped _reingest_dependents), so affected callers re-parse and their CALLS edges are rebuilt exactly as a fresh index would emit them. The dependency set is the union of old and new dispatch state, so removals and renames prune stale edges instead of orphaning them.

  • New codebase_rag/dispatch_dependents.py: stdlib-ast scan of changed .py files, base resolution through imports, class-change detection, and dispatch target computation (subclass neighbourhood via the INHERITS hierarchy; Protocol conformance over effective/inherited methods, full conformance plus the unique named-implementer convention, mirroring the resolver).
  • Four new Cypher queries in codebase_rag/constants/graph.py, with matching emulator cases in evals/cgr_graph.py.
  • GraphUpdater._dispatch_dependent_keys, hooked into both incremental paths; a failed graph read degrades to the previous behaviour. Python-only, .py files only; re-export following is not modelled.

Interaction with #3363 (interface-fingerprint skip)

Dispatch dependents join waiters, which _dependent_keys/_settle_stable re-parse unconditionally: the fingerprint skip is consulted only for dependents of a file whose interface held, and a dispatch dependent is queued for what a different file gained or lost. The lookup never reads or writes fingerprints, and a comment-only edit produces no class change, so unchanged callers keep their fingerprints. Covered by test_comment_only_edit_after_dispatch_fix_keeps_callers_edges.

Tests

Regression tests fail without the fix and pass with it. Every incremental run is compared against a fresh-index snapshot of the whole graph.

  • codebase_rag/tests/test_incremental_dispatch_dependents.py (11 tests): the issue repro (added subclass + conformer), override/conformer added to existing classes, grandchild + diamond inheritance, partial Protocol conformance gating, unrelated same-named method / third-party base queueing nothing, perf(incremental): keep the callers' edges when an edit leaves the file's interface unchanged #3363 parity, removal, rename, scoped reingest add + removal.
  • codebase_rag/tests/test_dispatch_dependents.py (15 tests): synthetic fixtures for the scan, base resolution (dotted/relative/aliased imports, ambiguous same-named bases), and target computation (including conformance completed through an inherited method).
  • Neighbouring suites, all passing: incremental added/deleted dependents + implements + interface dispatch (29), interface skip (71), incremental eval + edge-site + graph-updater incremental (102), rename + interface implementers + restore-after-deferred + cacheless lookup + Go implicit interfaces (306 passed, 30 skipped).
  • ruff check + ruff format --check clean; ty check clean on the full project; bandit reports no high-severity issues.

No before/after screenshot or GIF is attached: one could not be produced in this environment, and the incremental-equals-fresh tests above encode the before/after behaviour instead.

Walkthrough

Incremental and scoped re-ingestion now detects Python class and Protocol dispatch changes. It finds callers affected by old or new dispatch targets and queues their files for re-parsing.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description provides a detailed problem statement, fix summary, issue reference, implementation scope, limitations, regression coverage, validation results, and explanation for the missing visual demo. Although it does not reproduce every template heading or checklist item, it contains the required substantive information and is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Active direct issue #3338 requires incremental dispatch edges to match a fresh index when a subclass override or Protocol conformer is added. The reviewed head adds codebase_rag/dispatch_dependents.py, which computes self-dispatch and Protocol-dispatch targets from old graph state and new source bytes. GraphUpdater._dispatch_dependent_keys queues the affected callers through waiters in both the batch _process_files path and the scoped _reingest_dependents path. The old and new dispatch sets are unioned, so removals and renames prune stale edges. Follow-up commits in the reviewed range add root-base and modified-class handling, external-to-first-party base identity changes, and removed-class exclusion. The described tests cover the issue repro, added overrides and conformers in existing classes, inheritance, partial conformance, removals, renames, scoped reingest, and incremental-versus-fresh graph snapshots. This evidence comes from the PR summary and description. The test results are the author's reported results. I did not rerun them. Workflows have not run yet, so CI status is unconfirmed.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes support #3338. The new scanner and target-computation module, four dispatch Cypher queries and their emulator cases in evals/cgr_graph.py, the GraphUpdater hooks, and the two test modules all implement the dispatch-dependent refresh. The stated limits (Python only, .py files only, no re-export following) define the implementation scope and do not add unrelated work. The read-failure fallback to previous behaviour is part of the same change. The summary shows no unrelated module or behaviour change. This judgment relies on the PR summary; I did not inspect the diff hunks directly.

P1 Inherited targets miss new implementations

These prefixes name the conforming class, not the class that defines an inherited method. Suppose Client requires get and set, while Child(Base) defines set and inherits Base.get. An existing caller of client.get() points to Base.get, but this lookup produces Child.get.

Adding a standalone Real with both methods misses that caller: it has no edge into the new file, and none of these prefixes matches its existing target. The caller never gains Real.get, so incremental and fresh indexes still differ. Resolve inherited method owners when collecting the old and new target prefixes.

Fixed in the follow-up commit on this branch: protocol prefixes now name the defining class for an inherited method (owner resolved per old/new state), so the caller's existing edge to Base.get matches and the caller is re-parsed when a new conformer arrives. Covered by test_incremental_conformer_through_inherited_method_gains_new_target (incremental matches a fresh index) and test_protocol_targets_name_the_inherited_method_owner. CI: the workflows await maintainer approval, so there is no CI result yet.

P1 Old implementation links survive

Both states use the same named value, even though adding a class can change name uniqueness. Suppose ClientProtocol requires get and set, and an existing partial a.Client defines only get. The unique-name convention selects a.Client.get.

Adding another partial b.Client makes named become None. Both computed conformer sets are then empty, so the caller is not queued and keeps a.Client.get, although a fresh index no longer selects it. Compute name uniqueness separately for the old and new class sets.

Fixed in the follow-up commit on this branch: named-implementer uniqueness is now judged separately for the old and new class states, so the old partial implementer's target is still named (and its callers re-parsed to prune the stale edge) when a second same-named class ends uniqueness. Covered by test_incremental_second_same_named_client_retires_old_named_target (incremental matches a fresh index) and test_protocol_named_uniqueness_is_per_state. CI: the workflows await maintainer approval, so there is no CI result yet.

P1 Detached overrides keep old callers

Base changes need the methods of existing descendants too, not just the changed class's own methods. Suppose Root defines m and calls self.m(), A(Root) is empty, Mid(A) is empty, and Leaf(Mid) overrides m, with each class in a separate file.

Changing Mid(A) to Mid(B) removes Leaf.m from Root's dispatch targets. But method_names is empty, so this lookup produces no target prefixes. Only the files defining A and B become waiters. The one-level dependent lookup queues Leaf, but not Root, whose old edge to the still-existing Leaf.m is restored. Include descendant override names when a class changes bases.

Fixed in the follow-up commit on this branch: when a class changes bases, descendant override names are included in the targets for both the old and new hierarchy, and the updater now reads the affected hierarchy components' full method sets so the override name is available to the lookup. Covered by test_incremental_detached_subclass_prunes_dispatch_edge (incremental matches a fresh index). CI: the workflows await maintainer approval, so there is no CI result yet.

Follow-up pushed on this branch since the last review round: the dispatch state sets now include root bases and modified classes whose old shape the filtered read dropped, the protocol set is built once per call, and there are isolated unit tests for the component helpers. A further follow-up fixes the base-spelling match so an external base becoming a first-party base is reported as a change (with the guard scoped to the bases whose spelling actually changed), and closes two gaps an independent review found in the state sets: hierarchy values now join the uniqueness candidate pool, and removed classes stay out of the new state. Tests for the dispatch helpers pass. The workflows still await maintainer approval, so there is no CI result yet.
