fix(engine): align reflection-mode data sources and hooks with source-gen - #7094
Conversation
…-gen - MethodDataSource no longer throws for parameterless test methods in reflection mode. - Reflection-mode MethodDataSource awaits ValueTask<T> results. - Arguments rows on a GenerateGenericTest-closed method are kept only for the instantiation their values fit, as the generator does. - Static and instance hooks declared on open generic base classes are bound to the closed type before invocation. - Assembly location filtering matches whole directory names, so paths containing "ref" or "runtimes" no longer hide every test assembly; zero scannable assemblies no longer crash discovery. - The source generator now emits SkipIfEmpty on MethodDataSource. Fixes #7092

Review of #7094I read the diff but did not build the PR or run any tests. Each fix targets a root cause, and the PR description lines it up with the failing tests. The pieces I looked at were the I found nothing blocking. These are suggestions:

…with inferred types Reflection hook discovery registered a static hook on Base<T> for both the open definition and each constructed base reached through a derived class, so once the open copy was bound to the closed type the hook ran twice. Static hooks on constructed generic bases now register against the open definition, as the source generator does. For [GenerateGenericTest] methods with [Arguments], reflection mode now mirrors the generator: each row closes the method over the types inferred from its own values, and [GenerateGenericTest] types that no row inferred run with every row. This replaces the row compatibility filter, which dropped rows such as an int literal on a <long> instantiation.

…gen mode An empty [MethodDataSource] without SkipIfEmpty runs the test once with no arguments, as NoDataSource does (#2862). The reflection path already did this, but the source-generated Factory path yielded no rows, so in source-gen mode the test did not exist. Apply the same rule after the Factory enumeration so both modes agree.

With [GenerateGenericTest], reflection mode inferred instantiations only from [Arguments] rows. The source generator also infers them from typed data sources (DataSourceGeneratorAttribute<T> and AsyncDataSourceGeneratorAttribute<T>) and from IInfersType<T> parameter attributes, and it skips the [GenerateGenericTest] entry for any type a data source already produced. Reflection mode now does the same, so a typed source's rows no longer disappear and a covered type no longer runs twice.
Fixes #7092
Summary
tests/TUnit.UnitTestsfails 4 tests on net10.0 with--reflectiononmain; they pass in source-gen mode. Each failure is a real reflection-mode bug, not a test that relies on source-gen behaviour. I found two more mode differences while reproducing them, and this PR fixes those too.Root causes and fixes

It is always empty for a parameterless test method.MembersToGenerateas valid.TestWithAsyncValueTaskDataSource:ValueTask<...> cannot be converted to Int32Task<T>,IAsyncEnumerable<T>andIEnumerable, but notValueTask<T>, so the result was passed to the test without being awaited.ValueTask<T>toTask<T>withAsTask(theMethodInfois cached per type) and reuse theTaskbranch.GenericTestWithData<Int32>:String cannot be converted to Int32[GenerateGenericTest]type, the reflection collector closed the method and attached every[Arguments]row. The generator pairs each row with the instantiation inferred from it, so reflection made 4 tests where source-gen makes 2.ResolveMethodInstantiationsuses the generator's algorithm. Each[Arguments]row closes the method over the types inferred from its own values and runs only there. Each[GenerateGenericTest]type that no row inferred runs with every row. The generated hook body binds the method to the closed base type ofcontext.ClassType.MethodBase.GetMethodFromHandle, with a cache. Static hooks use the class from the hook context; instance hooks use the instance type. A static hook found on a constructed base (Base<int>reached from a derived class) is registered against the open definition, as source-gen does, so it runs once and not twice.SemaphoreSlim maxCount 0when the checkout path containedreforruntimes(e.g....\reflection-unittests\)ShouldScanAssemblyusedlocation.Contains("ref"). A test with an empty
[MethodDataSource]and noSkipIfEmptynow runs once with no arguments in source-gen mode, as it already did in reflection mode. Before this change the test was not created at all. If the test method has parameters, that run fails with an argument-count error, which is the same result reflection mode already gives. [GenerateGenericTest]row pairing now matches source-gen output, including rows such as an int literal on a<long>instantiation. The compatibility filter is gone.DataSourceGeneratorAttribute<T>,AsyncDataSourceGeneratorAttribute<T>) and fromIInfersType<T>parameter attributes such asMatrix<T>, as source-gen does. A[GenerateGenericTest]type that any of these already produced is not repeated. So is inference from a[MethodDataSource]returningIEnumerable<Func<(...)>>. Tuple types are flattened throughTRest, so eight or more elements infer correctly. Rows whose inferred types violate constraints are skipped, as the generator does today; fix(engine): substitute class type arguments and array element types in build-time constraint checks #7102 changes the generator to report them as failures, and reflection will need the same change once it merges.[Arguments("x", 1)]onTest<T>(T, T)) take the last type in both modes.
