Fixes #7089

Root cause

InfrastructureGenerator adds a [ModuleInitializer] to every assembly built with the TUnit source generator. That includes TUnit.Playwright, TUnit.FsCheck and users' shared test libraries. The first thing the initializer does is set SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled = true. TUnitServiceProvider then sets the property to the mode it selected, but nothing stopped a later write. A module initializer runs the first time its module is touched, which can be after startup. In TUnit.UnitTests --reflection, reflection discovery calls GetCustomAttributes, which creates a TUnit.Playwright attribute and so runs that assembly's initializer. That switched the run back to source-generated mode. As a result:

  • ReflectionHookDiscoveryService.DiscoverInstanceHooksForType threw Cannot use reflection-based hook discovery when source generation is enabled for every closed generic test class.
  • PropertyInjectionPlanBuilder.Build took the source-generated path in reflection mode.
  • ModeDetector.IsSourceGenerationAvailable and user code that checks SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled got the wrong mode.

Fix

  • SourceRegistrar gets an internal LockExecutionMode(bool). It sets the value and marks the mode as decided. After that, the public IsEnabled setter ignores writes. Writes made before the engine decides the mode still work, so the fallback in ExecutionModeHelper (no generated sources means reflection) is unchanged.
  • TUnitServiceProvider calls LockExecutionMode with the result of ExecutionModeHelper.IsSourceGenerationMode instead of assigning the property.

The public API and generator output are unchanged. No reflection is added, so AOT and trimming are not affected. The setter takes a lock, which matters only if a module initializer runs at the same moment as engine startup. It is called once per assembly, so the cost is negligible. The getter is a volatile read.

Tests

  • tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/7089/ExecutionModeLockTests.cs with tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7089Tests.cs: after the engine has started, the test writes true and then false to IsEnabled, as a late module initializer would. It asserts that the value still matches the selected mode. It fails without the fix in both modes and passes with it in both modes. Engine.Tests in reflection mode passes. The AOT mode only runs on GitHub Actions, so it was skipped locally.
  • tests/TUnit.UnitTests/SourceRegistrarExecutionModeTests.cs: a closed generic test class ([GenerateGenericTest(typeof(int))]). This reproduces the real case, because TUnit.Playwright's initializer runs during discovery. Without the fix it fails in --reflection with the InvalidOperationException. With the fix it passes in both modes.
  • Full TUnit.UnitTests (net10.0): source-gen mode, 0 failed. --reflection mode, 4 failures (EmptyStaticDataSource_ShouldYieldOneEmptyResult, TestWithAsyncValueTaskDataSource, GenericTestWithData<Int32>, InitializeEntity). The same 4 fail on main and are unrelated.
  • TUnit.PublicAPI: the Core and other API tests pass. OpenTelemetry_Library_Has_No_API_Changes fails locally only because the long worktree path makes a CallerFilePath string literal wrap. That assembly is not touched by this change.
  • TUnit.Core builds for all target frameworks with 0 warnings.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • The execution mode selected for a test run now remains consistent throughout the run. Later changes to source-generation availability no longer change the selected mode.
  • Tests

    • Added regression coverage for late execution-mode changes and for generic test classes running in different modes.

…es load

Every assembly built with the TUnit source generator gets a module
initializer that sets SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled = true. When such an
assembly is first touched after the engine has chosen reflection mode
(for example TUnit.Playwright during reflection discovery), the write
flipped the mode back to source-generated. Closed generic test classes
then failed with "Cannot use reflection-based hook discovery when source
generation is enabled", and property injection picked the source-gen path.

The engine now calls an internal SourceRegistrar.LockExecutionMode, after
which IsEnabled writes are ignored.

Review of #7091

The root-cause analysis is sound: a late [ModuleInitializer] from a generator-built assembly such as TUnit.Playwright was overwriting the mode the engine selected. Making the engine's decision authoritative is the right fix. It leaves the public API unchanged and adds no reflection, so AOT and trimming are unaffected. Lock is already used in TUnit.Core, so it builds on every target framework.

I have no blocking issues. These are suggestions:

  1. The lock is process-wide and never resets. _isModeLocked stays true once set. If a process creates more than one TUnitServiceProvider, the later LockExecutionMode call still overwrites the value, so that case works. A user or test that writes IsEnabled expecting an effect after engine startup will now be silently ignored. Consider documenting that on the setter, or marking it [EditorBrowsable(Never)], since it is effectively engine-owned now.
  2. A silent ignore hides misuse. Writes after the lock do nothing and give no diagnostic. That is acceptable for module initializers, but a Debug.WriteLine or similar when a write is dropped would make future mode confusion easier to find.
  3. Simpler design option. The generated module initializer could stop writing IsEnabled = true and instead register sources only. Mode would then be derived solely from the engine. That is a larger generator and snapshot change, so the current guard is a reasonable minimal fix. The initializer write is still redundant, though, and could be removed later.
  4. Nit: SourceRegistrar.cs is missing a blank line between LockExecutionMode's closing brace and the next XML doc comment.
  5. Test robustness: ExecutionModeLockTests infers the mode from Environment.GetCommandLineArgs().Contains("--reflection"). This breaks if the mode is chosen another way, for example by an environment variable or the no-generated-sources fallback. Comparing against ExecutionModeHelper, or against a value captured before the writes, would be less brittle.

The regression tests cover both the direct-write case and the real closed-generic scenario in both modes. Overall this looks good to merge.

- Document on IsEnabled that the engine owns the value after startup and
list the supported ways to choose the execution mode.
- Report a dropped write that would have changed the mode through
Trace.WriteLine. Writes before the lock, and writes of the current
value, return without allocating or logging.
- Add the missing blank line after LockExecutionMode.
- ExecutionModeLockTests captures the engine-selected mode instead of
inferring it from the --reflection command-line argument.

Thanks for the review. I addressed it in 6a1ee52.

Changed

  1. Setter docs (done). IsEnabled now has a <remarks> block. It says the engine owns the value after startup, that writes after the mode is selected have no effect, and which supported options choose the mode: --reflection, --tunit-execution-mode, TUNIT_EXECUTION_MODE and [assembly: ReflectionMode]. I did not add [EditorBrowsable(Never)] to the property. The whole SourceRegistrar class already carries [EditorBrowsable(Never)] in non-Debug builds, so the attribute would only add noise. TUnit.PublicAPI passes unchanged because the docs-only change does not affect the API surface.
  2. Diagnostic on a dropped write (done). A locked write that would have changed the value now goes to Trace.WriteLine through a non-inlined helper. A write that lands before the lock, or that matches the locked value, returns early: it allocates nothing and logs nothing. The common case is a late generated initializer writing true during a source-generated run, and that case is silent. The messages are constant strings. I used Trace rather than Debug because Debug.WriteLine is [Conditional("DEBUG")] and would be compiled out of the Release package. TraceRegistry in TUnit.Core already uses the same pattern. The engine's ThrowListener only overrides Fail, so WriteLine is safe.
  3. Blank line after LockExecutionMode (done).
  4. Test robustness (done). ExecutionModeLockTests now captures SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled before it writes. The engine has already locked the value by then, so the test no longer depends on Environment.GetCommandLineArgs(). It still catches the regression in both modes: without the lock, writing true sticks in reflection mode, and writing false sticks in source-generated mode. ExecutionModeHelper is internal to TUnit.Engine, so the test project cannot call it.

Declined

  1. Removing IsEnabled = true from generated module initializers. That write is not redundant. It is the signal for the final fallback in ExecutionModeHelper.IsSourceGenerationMode, which returns SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled when no CLI option, attribute or environment variable selects a mode. That fallback is how a run falls back to reflection when the test assembly was not built with the generator. If the write were removed, the engine would need a new signal such as "sources were registered", which would change generator output and every snapshot. Assemblies built by older generators would also keep writing IsEnabled = true at runtime, so the guard added here would still be needed for compatibility. The change would add churn without letting us drop the guard, so I kept the current design.

Tests run (net10.0, Windows)

  • TUnit.Engine.Tests Issue7089Tests: reflection mode passed. The AOT leg skips locally because it runs only on GHA.
  • TUnit.TestProject with --treenode-filter "/*/TUnit.TestProject.Bugs._7089/ExecutionModeLockTests/*": passed in source-generated mode and with --reflection.
  • TUnit.UnitTests SourceRegistrarExecutionModeGenericTests: passed in both modes. The full project passes in source-generated mode (527 passed, 3 skipped). With --reflection, 4 unrelated tests fail: EmptyStaticDataSource_ShouldYieldOneEmptyResult, TestWithAsyncValueTaskDataSource, GenericTestWithData<Int32>(hello) and InitializeEntity. The same 4 fail at the previous PR head 39e5029, so they predate this change, and CI does not run this project with --reflection.
  • TUnit.PublicAPI: 5 of 5 passed.

Review: looks good.

The root cause analysis is sound. A late [ModuleInitializer] from TUnit.Playwright, TUnit.FsCheck or a user's shared test library could flip SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled back to true after the engine chose reflection mode. LockExecutionMode closes that hole. The public setter stays source- and binary-compatible, and writes before the lock still work, so the "no generated sources means reflection" fallback is unchanged. I found no other writers of IsEnabled in src or tests besides the generator's module initializer and TUnitServiceProvider, which this PR changes.

Notes, none blocking:

  • Calling LockExecutionMode a second time, for example if several TUnitServiceProvider instances are created in one process, simply overwrites the value. That seems right, since the newest engine run wins. A short comment saying so would help.
  • ReportIgnoredWrite goes through Trace.WriteLine, which usually has no listener. That is fine for a diagnostic, but a user who sets IsEnabled and sees it ignored will not find out why unless they attach one. The XML remarks cover this adequately.
  • The setter now takes a lock where it used to be a plain field write. It runs at most once per assembly, so this is negligible. The volatile read in the getter is cheap on the hot path.
  • The two regression tests cover both modes. One checks the engine-level invariant. The other reproduces the actual closed-generic failure.

Approve from my side.

Review of #7091

I read the full diff but did not build it or run the tests here.

Verdict: looks good. The root cause is diagnosed correctly. The fix is small, and the public API and generator output are unchanged.

Why the fix works

  • LockExecutionMode makes the engine the single owner of the mode after startup. A late [ModuleInitializer] from TUnit.Playwright, TUnit.FsCheck or a user library can no longer flip a reflection run back to source-gen.
  • Writes made before the engine decides still work, so the 'no generated sources means reflection' fallback is preserved.
  • It adds no reflection, so there is no AOT or trimming impact.
  • The ignored-write message goes through Trace.WriteLine, which helps diagnose this class of problem.

Minor points, none blocking

  1. Silent no-op setter. A public setter that ignores writes can surprise anyone who sets IsEnabled deliberately after startup. The doc remarks cover it. Longer term, consider marking the setter [EditorBrowsable(Never)] or obsoleting it, so the engine is the only legitimate writer.
  2. Static lock state. _isModeLocked is never reset. If a process hosts several engine runs, the later LockExecutionMode call replaces the value, and the docs say so. That is fine, but it does mean the lock is not a once-only guarantee.
  3. Cost. A lock on every IsEnabled set is negligible because it runs once per assembly. If you want it cheaper, an Interlocked or volatile-only fast path would avoid the lock entirely.
  4. Test coverage. The tests cover both modes: the engine test writes true then false, and the unit test uses a closed generic class. The finally restore in ExecutionModeLockTests is a reasonable safeguard. AOT mode only runs in CI, so watch that job.

Nice, well-scoped fix.

A later engine instance in the same process with no explicit mode option now
falls back to whether generated sources registered, instead of the mode the

Review of #7091

I reviewed the diff by reading it. I didn't build it or run any tests.

Verdict: looks good. The fix targets the root cause. The engine now owns the execution mode after startup, so a late module initializer can't flip it.

What I checked:

  • LockExecutionMode and the IsEnabled setter are both guarded by ModeLock, and the volatile fields give lock-free reads. The setter keeps pre-lock behaviour, so the no-generated-sources fallback to reflection still works.
  • Adding IsSourceGenerationAvailable as a separate signal is a sound design choice. Every write still updates it, so the ExecutionModeHelper default and ModeDetector don't read the locked value. This keeps a second engine instance in the same process working.
  • The public API surface is unchanged, and no reflection is added, so AOT and trimming are unaffected.
  • The tests cover both the direct late-write case (ExecutionModeLockTests) and the real scenario (a closed generic class under --reflection).

Non-blocking points:

  1. ModeDetector.IsSourceGenerationAvailable is public and now returns the 'available' signal rather than the active mode. Its name matches that meaning. The ModeDetector XML doc is worth a quick check so it reads the same way.
  2. LockExecutionMode replaces the locked value on every call. That is documented and fits the multi-engine case. If concurrent engine instances in one process ever occur, the last one wins and could affect another run mid-flight. This is an edge case, not something to fix here.
  3. ReportIgnoredWrite goes through Trace.WriteLine, which is silent by default. That's fine for diagnostics, but the behaviour change for third-party code that writes IsEnabled after startup is only discoverable through the XML remarks.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Do not run this test in parallel with other tests.

Line 31 writes SourceRegistrar.IsEnabled = false. This write sets the process-wide IsSourceGenerationAvailable signal to false. The signal stays false until the finally block restores it on line 39. The class does not have [NotInParallel]. A test that runs in parallel and reads ModeDetector.IsSourceGenerationAvailable can see false during this window, even when source generation is available. The result is intermittent failures in unrelated tests. Add [NotInParallel] to the class so that other tests cannot see this temporary state.

Based on learnings: "Unit tests should not depend on shared mutable global state ... Flag tests that read/write global/static variables without proper isolation."
