[PTL] MSI Prestige 13 AI+ A3MG: Missing RT713/RT1320 SOF topology — audio fixed by building upstream topology #11404

Open

Description

@jujisec

Summary

On my MSI Prestige 13 AI+ A3MG-020 with Intel Panther Lake, a fresh Fedora 45 installation had no working audio.

ALSA reported --- no soundcards --- and PipeWire only showed "Dummy Output".

I successfully restored audio by compiling sof-ptl-rt713-l3-rt1320-l1.tplg from the upstream SOF source and installing the compiled topology manually.

System information

  • Laptop: MSI Prestige 13 AI+ A3MG-020
  • DMI product: Prestige13AIA3MG
  • DMI board: MS-13Q4
  • Distribution: Fedora 45
  • Kernel: 7.2.15-300.fc45.x86_64
  • SOF firmware package: alsa-sof-firmware-2026.09.2-1.fc45.noarch
  • Audio driver: sof-audio-pci-intel-ptl
  • SoundWire topology: RT713 on link 3, RT1320 on link 1

Original kernel errors

sof-audio-pci-intel-ptl 0000:00:1f.3:
SOF firmware and/or topology file not found.

Firmware file:
intel/sof-ipc4/ptl/sof-ptl.ri

Topology file:
intel/sof-ipc4-tplg/sof-ptl-rt713-l3-rt1320-l1.tplg

error: sof_probe_work failed err: -2

Before the fix:

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---

The kernel logs also contained SoundWire transfer timeouts.

Working solution

Cloned upstream SOF:

git clone --depth 1 \
  https://github.com/thesofproject/sof.git \
  ~/sof-audio-src

Source commit:

80b14b070b1e0c89df89b117c94b347866cc8d67

Built the missing topology:

cmake -S ~/sof-audio-src/tools \
  -B ~/sof-audio-build \
  -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release

cmake --build ~/sof-audio-build \
  --target topology2_prod_sof-ptl-rt713-l3-rt1320-l1

Installed the resulting file:

sudo install -m 644 \
  ~/sof-audio-build/topology/topology2/production/sof-ptl-rt713-l3-rt1320-l1.tplg \
  /usr/lib/firmware/intel/sof-ipc4-tplg/

I had previously tried a symlink from the packaged -l1-2ch topology but removed it before compiling and installing the upstream topology.

Result

Audio now works.

ALSA detects the soundcard:

0 [sofsoundwire ]: sof-soundwire - sof-soundwire
                     Micro_StarInternationalCo.Ltd.-Prestige13AIA3MG-REV1.0-MS_13Q4

Possible packaging issue

The kernel expects:

sof-ptl-rt713-l3-rt1320-l1.tplg

The published firmware file lists include:

sof-ptl-rt713-l3-rt1320-l1-2ch.tplg

However, the exact topology requested by the kernel can be built successfully from the upstream SOF source and restores audio on this hardware.

The required topology was introduced in:

#10760

It appears that the corresponding compiled topology may be missing from the distributed firmware package.

Could the maintainers confirm whether the non-2ch topology needs to be added to the firmware distribution, or whether another packaging or kernel-side fix is intended?

I am happy to test an updated firmware package or provide additional logs.

Thanks for your work on SOF!

@jujisec thanks for the report, so today we release FW and topology together in same package, but this is problematic now for updates that come from devices where SOF developers are unaware of the configuration. i.e. having a separate sof-topologies package would mean more frequent updates and we are transitioning to this model.
Can you confirm if you tried the latest sof-bin repo release tag from git or is this also missing the file ?
