not possible to select or get output from the headphone jack (Dell 9720 w/ Alder Lake PCH-P audio) #5780

Description

@eighthave

When I try either plugging/unplugging headphones or manually selecting the headphones from the GNOME Sound Settings, the sound always comes out of the speakers. In the Sound Settings, it doesn't switch to the Headphones after being selected.

This is the same hardware as #5422, #5212 and #5213

  • Debian/trixie
  • kernel 7.0.7+deb13-amd64
  • firmware-sof-signed 2025.01-1
  • pipewire 1.4.9-1~bpo13+2
  • BIOS Revision: 1.37.0

With 7.0.x this barely ever works, maybe never. This worked sometimes 6.12.x and through the various kernel/software versions had periods where it was quite reliable, others that were flaky and needing reboot, and sometimes when it didn't work.

Here's a hopefully useful log:

    I updated some related things and it broke audio entirely. Now there is an additional "Dummy Output" device and I can't select the actual device, nor get sound out.

    Could you test the jack detection using the command 'evtest'? And share the test result with us.

    After starting evtest on 15 then plugging in the headphones once then unplugging them, I had:

    Input driver version is 1.0.1
    Input device ID: bus 0x0 vendor 0x0 product 0x0 version 0x0
    Input device name: "sof-soundwire Headset Jack"
    Supported events:
      Event type 0 (EV_SYN)
      Event type 1 (EV_KEY)
        Event code 114 (KEY_VOLUMEDOWN)
        Event code 115 (KEY_VOLUMEUP)
        Event code 164 (KEY_PLAYPAUSE)
        Event code 582 (KEY_VOICECOMMAND)
      Event type 5 (EV_SW)
        Event code 2 (SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT) state 0
        Event code 4 (SW_MICROPHONE_INSERT) state 0
    Properties:
    Testing ... (interrupt to exit)
    Event: time 1779884582.943626, type 5 (EV_SW), code 2 (SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT), value 1
    Event: time 1779884582.943626, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------

    Then still no sound on speakers or headphones, the sound output seems stuck on "Dummy Output", and my sound settings looked like:

    Image

    Then plugging them in a second time, I got two more lines:

    Event: time 1779884632.818874, type 5 (EV_SW), code 2 (SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT), value 0
    Event: time 1779884632.818874, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------

    Event: time 1779884633.275544, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------

    Then unplugging again, I got one more line:

    Event: time 1779884638.110798, type 5 (EV_SW), code 2 (SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT), value 0
    Event: time 1779884638.110798, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------

    Plugging in again gave me

    Event: time 1779884763.491551, type 5 (EV_SW), code 2 (SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT), value 1
    Event: time 1779884763.491551, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------

    And unplugging gave me:

    Event: time 1779884962.194266, type 5 (EV_SW), code 2 (SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT), value 0
    Event: time 1779884962.194266, -------------- SYN_REPORT ------------

    @eighthave Thanks for testing.
    The jack detection seems to be working fine.
    Please test the following command:

    @eighthave Could you do the test below?
    Please plug the jack and set the amixer control below.
    $ amixer -c0 cset name='Headphone Switch' 1
    And manually play a WAV file.
    $ aplay -D plughw:0,0 wavfile.wav

    Please dump alsa-info again while playback and share it with us.

    This works, I could hear this on my headphones. I ran sudo alsa-info while it was playing back.

    @shumingfan

    @eighthave After testing, I couldn’t find any issues in either the codec driver or the UCM configuration.
    It appears that the audio service is unable to switch the proper controls to enable the endpoint.
    This issue should be reported to PipeWire, or the PipeWire version should be upgraded.
