What have you tried to diagnose or workaround this issue?
Running very recent kernel (5.5.3.x)

To Reproduce
Boot Intel ClearLinux 5.5.3 on a Lenovo S540 13IML with an i7-10510U CPU. No sound.

Reproduction Rate
Every time.

Expected behavior
Working sound card output selectable in GNOME or through pactl.

Impact
Showstopper for Linux deployment on this SKU.

Environment

  1. Branch name and commit hash of the 2 repositories: sof (firmware/topology) and linux (kernel driver).
    • Kernel: N/A
    • SOF: N/A
  2. Name of the topology file
    • Topology: Unfortunately not sure where this is stored on clearlinux
  3. Name of the platform(s) on which the bug is observed.
    • Platform: Lenovo Ideapad S540 13IML with GenuineIntel i7-10510U running ClearLinux 32310 on kernel 5.5.3

I've cross-filed the bug with the Intel distro guys & gals over here as well clearlinux/distribution#1771

    You don't have a firmware file in /lib/firmware/intel/sof as shown in

    [    8.320505] sof-audio-pci 0000:00:1f.3: Direct firmware load for intel/sof/sof-cml.ri failed with error -2

    @ahkok

    Yes, we need to package this and include it.

    Thanks for the explanations both of you.

    @plbossart I went to check releases but I can' t see any sof-cml.ri file available there. Should I be looking elsewhere?

    sof-cml.ri should be a symlink to the latest firmware. We don't encode the version in the driver.

    Edit: for CML use sof-cnl-v1.4.2.ri

  7. chrysophylax commented on Feb 20, 2020

    @chrysophylax
    Author

    Progress!
    I added sof-cnl-v1.4.2.ri to /etc/firmware/intel/sof on ClearLinux and created a symlink

    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Feb 21 00:14 .
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4.0K Feb 21 00:14 ..
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   17 Feb 21 00:14 sof-cml.ri -> sof-cnl-v1.4.2.ri
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 280K Feb 21 00:14 sof-cnl-v1.4.2.ri

    And the error about sof-cml.ri went away in dmesg.

    However, now it can' t find a topology file...

    @chrysophylax can you check here https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin
    This will be the fw, topology and debug file repo. It will be rebased over next few days as we are all aligning on layout, but you should be able to find everything.

  9. ahkok commented on Feb 21, 2020

    @ahkok

    Are these releases going to be tagged, and signed?

  10. ahkok commented on Feb 21, 2020

    @ahkok

    Looking at one of the branches, I see lots and lots of firmware files (great) but it's entirely unclear which ones are needed - are you going to at least add a sane, simple Makefile so that make DESTDIR=<root> install can just do the right thing and install the binary files into the right place for most Linux developers?

    I can write it.... if you need.

    @lgirdwood it seems you rebased the repo before I had time to pull down the tplg file. Any other place on the internet where it' s available?

    @chrysophylax appologies, updated now - we are using a branch per release. please checkout stable- v1.4.2. It may still churn a bit.

    Great, thanks for the update @lgirdwood . I just downloaded https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/blob/stable-v1.4.2/lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg-v1.4.2/sof-hda-generic-2ch.tplg and will try it out on the laptop later today.

    So it works fine for playback, 2ch sound is correctly being played. On the other hand, there is no microphone input available. Per spec, https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/IdeaPad/ideapad_S540_13IML/ideapad_S540_13IML_Spec.PDF there should be some kind of microphone on the laptop.

    Can you paste the results of alsa-info.sh somewhere and provide a link? same for the dmesg log.

    ACK, I can reproduce this error on 5.5.6, probably a bad merge happened, or missing patches in another series.

    Thanks @chrysophylax for bringing this to our attention, we currently don't test -stable and that's a gap. @xiulipan @wenqingfu FYI.

    Gah, this is embarrassing. The patch that added the new DAI is missing in stable...
    Anyways, we should really not use macros for array elements but ARRAY_SIZE.

    temporary work-around until we fix this with the -stable folks:

    @chrysophylax do you have an email I can use for a Reported-by tag - assume you don't mind?
