ci: publish definitions after each Framework release with trusted publishing - #98
Release after every Framework release.Update and Release Serverless Definitions now runs daily, as well as on manual dispatch and repository_dispatch. It publishes only when npm has a serverless version that @serverless/typescript does not have yet, and refuses versions older than the published latest.
Definitions match the exact release.frameworkVersion is pinned to the target version while generating, and the job fails if serverless --version reports a different one.
npm trusted publishing. The release job publishes with GitHub OIDC (id-token: write) instead of an NPM_TOKEN secret, so packages get provenance automatically.
Generating, testing and publishing run in separate jobs.
generate installs and runs the Framework CLI, which isn't covered by the lockfile. It has read-only permissions, no OIDC token and no push credentials, and it hands only index.d.ts on as an artifact.
verify starts from a clean, read-only checkout, installs locked dependencies with --ignore-scripts, tests the definitions and lists the package that would be published.
release is the only job that can push or publish. It runs no dependencies: it commits and tags the tested index.d.ts, pushes, and publishes.
If an earlier run already pushed the version tag but did not publish, release publishes only when the new index.d.ts matches the tagged one, and fails otherwise.
Dry runs. A manual run with dry-run generates and tests the definitions for any version, from any branch, and skips release entirely, so nothing is committed or published.
The installer's provenance is checked before it runs.npm audit signatures verifies the registry signatures and attestations of the serverless package. scripts/verify-installer-provenance.js then requires its SLSA provenance to come from serverless/serverless, .github/workflows/release-framework.yml, on refs/heads/main.
Schema properties without constraints are typed as unknown.
A schema property with only a description accepts any value, but json-schema-to-typescript compiles it to { [k: string]: unknown }. That rejects arrays such as an EventBridge pattern.source: ["aws.ec2"].
The plugin now marks such properties tsType: "unknown" before compiling. In the current schema this changes only the nine EventBridge pattern fields.
No exported type is removed silently.verify compares exported type names with the committed index.d.ts and fails if one disappears. The manual allow-removed-types input lets a maintainer publish anyway when a removal is intended.
Lockfile, TypeScript 5 and dependency hygiene.
Commits package-lock.json and installs with npm ci.
Bumps the typescript dev dependency to ^5.9.3. The latest @types/node, pulled in through json-schema-to-typescript, uses syntax TypeScript 4.9 can't parse.
Drops the unused ajv and serverless: "*" dev dependencies; the workflow installs the CLI itself. npm audit reports no vulnerabilities.
.npmrc sets min-release-age=3, so a lockfile change only resolves npm versions published at least 3 days earlier. The workflow installs the Framework CLI in a separate directory that this setting does not cover.
The published index.d.ts is generated by json-schema-to-typescript and doesn't depend on the TypeScript version.
Tests (npm run test:definitions).
test/serverless.ts is a typical service file that must compile against index.d.ts. It covers plugins, params, stages, custom, package, layers, function URLs, and HTTP API, REST API, SQS, schedule, S3, SNS, EventBridge and DynamoDB stream events.
test/invalid.ts holds configurations that must not compile. Each is marked @ts-expect-error, so the test fails if the definitions become too permissive.
Tests now also runs on pull requests, on Node.js 24, with npm ci.
Actions are pinned to commit SHAs.
Dependabot. Weekly npm and GitHub Actions updates, with a cooldown before new releases are proposed.
Tarball contents unchanged..serverless/ and scripts/ are kept out of the npm package.
Setup
A trusted publisher for @serverless/typescript is configured on npmjs.com for serverless/typescript, workflow update-and-release.yml, with npm publish allowed. Once a release has been published this way, the NPM_TOKEN secret can be removed.
Framework 4.46.0 was installed and generated the definitions;
lint, type and definitions tests passed;
all 63 previously exported types are kept and 3 are added;
npm pack --dry-run lists the same five files as before;
Publish definitions was skipped. npm latest, the tags and master are unchanged.
npm ci, npm run build, test:lint, test:type and test:definitions pass with the committed lockfile and .npmrc; npm audit finds 0 vulnerabilities.
test:definitions passes against the committed definitions and against definitions generated for 4.46.0 with this plugin.
Without the unknown fix it fails on the EventBridge pattern.
With AWS loosened to an open record it fails with unused @ts-expect-error.
Regenerated 4.46.0 with and without the unknown fix: only the nine EventBridge pattern fields differ.
check-exported-types.js fails when a type is removed.
index.d.ts generated after a TypeScript 4.9.5 build and after a 5.9.3 build is byte-identical.
min-release-age=3 refuses a version published the same day with npm 11.19.1 (bundled with Node.js 24) and 12.2.1, and doesn't apply to installs outside the project directory.
--version check fails with frameworkVersion pinned to a different release.
verify-installer-provenance.js rejects:
a different version;
a different repository;
a different ref;
a missing provenance attestation;
a dependency without a signature.
Version resolution: picks the latest, skips published versions, rejects older versions and malformed input; a dry run proceeds for any version.
Existing-tag check, in a shallow clone without tags: publishes when index.d.ts matches the tag, fails when it differs, and takes the normal commit path when there is no tag.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The plugin updates schema handling for unconstrained schemas. TypeScript tests and CI check definition types. The release workflow selects a Framework version, generates and verifies definitions, and publishes eligible versions to npm.
Changes: Definition Generation and Release
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Schema handling and definition checks src/plugin.ts, test/*, package.json, .github/workflows/test.yml, .npmrc
The plugin marks schemas without shape keywords as unknown. TypeScript fixtures check valid and invalid configurations. CI runs definition tests. The package configuration updates TypeScript and sets a minimum release age.
Version selection and definition generation .github/workflows/update-and-release.yml, scripts/verify-installer-provenance.js
The workflow selects and validates a version, installs the selected Serverless CLI, checks its signatures and provenance, and uploads generated definitions.
Definition verification and publication .github/workflows/update-and-release.yml, scripts/check-exported-types.js, .gitignore, .npmignore, .github/dependabot.yml
The workflow checks generated definitions and removed exported types before publication. Ignore rules and weekly dependency update settings are also added or changed.

serverless/typescript issue 97: The release workflow checks for Framework versions and publishes corresponding generated definitions, which relates to the report of stale published definitions.

Merge Risk: Low · up to e33b9
If a publish fails after the release tag is pushed and the package metadata changes before a retry, the published package could differ from the tagged release. This is a narrow edge case, and the rest of the pipeline looks sound, so it is mergeable with owner awareness.

Check package contents against the existing tag.
If a retry follows a change to package.json or another packed file, the definitions can match while npm publish uses different package contents from the release tag. Compare the packed contents of the tag and the release checkout before publishing.
