Bot should reply to the message that triggered the response #3556

Open

Description

@Kaztral-ar

When a user uses a command like !ping, the bot sends the response as a separate message instead of replying to the message that triggered it.

For example, currently:

User: !ping

Bot: Pong!
Command processing time: 72.875 ms

The bot should instead reply directly to the !ping message:

User: !ping
↳ Bot: Pong!
Command processing time: 72.875 ms

This would make it easier to follow which message the bot is responding to, especially in busy channels.

The reply should not mention or ping the user.

If the bot is using discord.py, this could be handled with:

await message.reply(response, mention_author=False)

Why

Replying to the original message makes it much clearer what the bot is responding to, especially in busy channels.

There's no way to add this across the board without replacing all invocations, and given there are likely to be wider upcoming changes to the bots command processing I'm not sure it's worth adding at this point.

I get that, but I think it’s still worth adding now. Anyway, we can leave it for now and revisit it later.

If we end up imminently moving to slash commands this work is done anyway, so I'm essentially saying we can tee it up if we use mention commands or whatever, but it's not necessary for slash commands.
